Applying Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theories
Sexual harassment is a negative aspect that society would like to forget about. However, there has been a lot of talk about the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the sexual harassment allegations (Ravelli and Webber 2016). Due to Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and his sexual harassment case, France might make a law that fines people for catcalls because of the women who are speaking out about sexual harassment (Ravelli et al. 2016). These current events tie in with Conflict theory due to the high status that Weinstein has and the power he has in the movie industry. This event also corresponds with Feminist theory of

Conflict theory explores power imbalances and conflict within our society to explain our social lives. (Bilefsky and Peltier. 2017). This classical theory would see the imbalance of power between Weinstein and the victims the theory would also see that his actions explained the social movement that is happening on social media. This movement brought awareness and a voice for women. This movement was introduced because of women-who lack the power to hold him responsible- needing their voices to be heard and need the support of other people and survivors. I believe that the sexual harassment movement on social media correlates with conflict theory because the article mentioned that one of the victims who Weinstein sexually harassed, had said that it was hard to go with him to his hotel room because of the status and influence he has in the movie industry (Ravelli et al. 2016). People want to move up in the movie business and make a name for themselves; the imbalance of power influences the women’s decisions to be persuaded to go along with Weinstein but before they know it, it is too late (Ravelli et al. 2016). It could be said that Weinstein’s power is very influential and impactful on how he treats people. I believe that conflict theory is strongly tied with this case because conflict theory speaks on behalf of the people who cannot speak for themselves; the people of power being Weinstein and the people who
Thirdly, the quarterly essay opened audience to verified truth. By applying evidences from around the world, from different situations, Goldsworthy made audience relies what women across the world have been going through along with their suffering. Goldsworthy likewise included conditions from careers that audiences don’t even focus on. For instance, Goldsworthy used many situation, but she revealed a female actress’s perspective for shooting a popular pornography. “88.2 percent contained physical aggression, principally spanking, gagging, and slapping, while 48.7 per cent of scenes contained verbal aggression, primarily name-calling. Perpetrators of aggression were usually male, whereas targets of aggression were overwhelmingly female…” (Goldsworthy, (2013))(4). The sentences
Men are considered to be the dominant gender in basically every industry. This heavily applies to the “Hollywood” film industry, where most films are directed, produced and/or written by men. With this, it’s no doubt that these men have a sense of power over everything, since they are in charge. Unfortunately, some men take this power a little too far. Over the years, various male celebrities have been accused of sexual abuse and harassment towards their female co-stars, assistants etc. The most recent example of this is the various allegations against one of the biggest film producer in Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein. Since the allegations have come out, a bunch of female celebrities have lent their support towards the victims of Weinstein and some even shared their own experiences with the disgraced producer. However, not many male celebrities have come out to condemn Weinstein’s actions. In fact, The Guardian, a British news agency released an article stating that they asked over 20 male celebrities who worked closely with the producer, and none of them returned their calls at the time (Wong and Levin,2017). To explain the event and why Weinstein and these male celebrities acted the way they did in this situation, I decided to use the classical theory “Conflict Theory” and the contemporary theory “Feminist Theory. After looking at both theories, I have decided that Conflict Theory is the best way to explain this situation due to the “power status” Weinstein and the men have
Injustices in this world infect people's lives like diseases. One in particular has not only developed over the years, but cases spring up in the most unthought of places. This injustice commonly known as sexual harassment affects women, children, and occasionally men all across the globe. There are many aspects when it comes to sexual harassment including its background, opposing viewpoints on the popular belief, the popular viewing, sexual harassment in today's society, solutions to the problem, and what the future would be like without this injustice on the world's hands.
One of the sociological theories is conflict theory. The conflict theory deals with people's level on wealth, or class. The conflict theory says that social change is beneficial, contrary to focuses on social order. In the story of the woman and her children, the conflict theory plays a big role on the situation. Police of higher class are threatening the homeless woman. The conflict theory is a constant struggle of people of higher class over powering people of lower class, or the weaker. The police are trying to over power the woman by telling her to leave. Even though the woman and her children were doing nothing wrong, the police used their power to tell her to leave. Also the people of the area showed
It really is pretty amazing to witness and be aware of sociological concepts in our day-to-day lives. Sociology concepts appear all around us since humans and human organizations are formed through social interactions. Over break, I noticed many sociological concepts but the one that stands out most to me is the appearance management that takes place in a customer service oriented work place. This interaction occurred between employees and their supervisors. I am a Helping Hands employee at Wegmans. Wegmans is a grocery store in the Mid-Atlantic states that is known for its customer service. It is in this customer service setting that employees manage their appearances. In order to be seen as a good employee to supervisors, employees utilize
Comparing and Contrasting How the Three Sociological Theories View the World Steven Spears Southern New Hampshire University Abstract In the world of sociology, there are three views, the conflict, functionalist, and interactionist. Each theory can be used to view the world and its social structure. Though they can be considered independent, it behooves us to examine, additionally, the combining of these views to better elaborate on the social constructs we are witness to.
Sexual abuse, specifically from a male, generates many negative consequences, especially to the victims involved. Male violence occurs all over the United States and has been steadily rising (Hooks 117). In Bell Hooks’ article, “Feminist Move to End Violence”, she discusses the reason why male violence is occurring. She explains, “While male supremacy encourages the use of abusive force to maintain male domination of women, it is the Western philosophical notion of hierarchical rule and coercive authority that is the root cause of violence against women, of adult violence against children, of all violence between those who dominate and those who are dominated” (Hooks 118). Due to the relevance of male violence today, feminist writers have been addressing this issue and its impact in their novels.
Submission refers to at least six sociological concepts covered in the lectures or textbook reading
In order to understand have theory of Sociological perspectives you must first define the three major philosophies. The first sociological perspective will be the symbolic interactionist perspective which focus on the everyday details of life. They look at how people interpret different signs and symbolic images that have a specific meaning to the originator but sometimes loses meaning to the receiver. Since words are not concrete and can sometime be manipulated to another person to justify why they thought this was the correct interpretation. The second sociological perspective I would like to address is the Functionalist perceptive which focus on how we are held together by adapting to social consensus. The majority
Sociological theory creates ways to understand the social world by having different theories to explain understand social life. It aids to make sense of this social world. It draws together a wide range of perspectives to help provide the fullest picture. (Macionis & Plummer p.36) It shows that one theory can explain something that another cannot. My aim is to answer this question with reference to both functionalism and conflict theory. This will be done by comparing and contrasting both theories in relation to their perspectives on both suicide and gender discrimination as social issues relevant to this day and age. Functionalism and conflict perspectives are both macro theories. This means that they focus on the big picture, for
Three broad models of criminal behaviors are the following: psychological, sociological and biological models. Actually, it is difficult to completely separate them and it is generally accepted, that all of them play a role in the interpretation of behavior. Though psychological principles can be applied across all the three models, they all have some specific ones, which would help in implementing across different crime control policies.
The paper should be typed, double-spaced, 11-point font, 1” margins. Both the write-up and your typed journal should be saved as ONE document with page numbers. Remember to include a citation for any resources referenced, in proper APA format, and make sure your name is on your paper.
What are the three major sociology perspectives in regards to social issues? They are Symbolic Interactionism perspectives, Functionalism perspectives, and Conflict Theory perspectives. These perspectives offer sociologists abstract examples for explaining how society affects people, and vice versa. Each perspective individually theorizes society, social forces, and human behavior.
Sociological Perspectives and Theories Sociologists try to explain how society orders itself but there are many different theories for this, which often conflict with one another. Some of these classic theories include Marxism, Functionalism, and Interactionism. There are also more modern or contemporary theories such as Feminism. Each sociological perspective has different beliefs.
Nevertheless, sexual abuse has always been biased towards women relative to men for as long as we can remember. Considering the fact that sexual abuse can occur to both genders, it is mostly known to victimize women. One of the most common environments for sexual abuse to take place is in academic domains. In the view of society, men are above women; in consequence, women portray a weak image, hence making easier casualties of sexual abuse in the educational field. Due to the fact that students may need guidance to better excel in their career, some professors begin treating it as an opportunity to gain sexual access from the student. To better illustrate the idea that sexual abuse makes its way through into academic environments, take the word from the victims themselves. “I was naive enough to think that we would talk about Wittgenstein, but after he flopped over me a few times, telling me that I had to have sex with him... I made my escape” (Whitley 39). Moreover, another victim said “I couldn’t say ‘no’ because he would have responded with rage and revenge. He would have ruined my career”(Whitley 39). In both cases, these women were attacked by the professors for being of lesser status; they were manipulated to remain silent by fear, threats, and their dependence on the professor for academic help. Due to the idea that women are viewed lesser than men, inflicts professors’ to
