In order to analyse classical and instrumental conditioning, it is required to first define the content from which they are derived from, that is learning. According to Domjan, learning is a long lasting change in the process of behaviour involving particular stimuli with or alternately responses that result from previous experiences with those or almost the same stimuli and responses (2009). There are several learning paradigms which take the behaviourist approach, but as previously mentioned this essay will focus on only two, which are classical conditioning and instrumental conditioning.

Classical conditioning is a utilisation of a neutral stimulus to signal the fast approaching conveyance of a biologically significant event. This teaching brings about an adjustment in the animal’s response to the neutral stimulus. Instrumental conditioning, however, is a method in which a reward is conveyed after an animal has made a response. It brings about the animal being more likely to reiterate the response (Pearce., 2008). This essay will aim to analyse classical and instrumental conditioning and also consider the similarities and differences between these two learning paradigms.

Classical conditioning involves the pairing of a neutral stimulus, with an unconditioned stimulus to elicit a response. One of the most prominent experiments conducted to define classical conditioning is the behavioural psychology study of Pavlov’s Dogs, devised by Russian physiologist, Ivan Pavlov
