Classroom Management & Disciplinary Response Paper Owing to my acculturation as a citizen of an autocratic society, I have been programed, by default, to uphold the traditionalist view of education. For behavioral management, most classrooms in my home country-Nigeria use “consequence” to enforce order in the classroom. Furthermore, the relationship between the teacher and students is top-down. Thus every student is expected to “obey before complain.” As a budding educationist who has seen the best of the two worlds (traditional and progressive, explicit directives versus collaborative problem solving) due to my background in Nigeria and experience as a preservice teacher in New York , I see myself at a crossroad concerning what identity I should take up as an educator. Nevertheless, until I see the need to redefine my identity in our constantly changing world, I will refer to myself as a ‘quasi traditional and progressive educator.’ I strongly believe that freedom is advantageous when working pari passu with discipline and order thus none should be sacrificed for the other. As a result of my aforementioned philosophy, discussed below, are some classroom practices, structures, procedures and routines that I intend to use in my future classrooms. The Assertive Discipline Model is a model that comes under the Management Theories. The two main theorises behind this model if discipline are Lee and Marlene Carter, the husband and wife duo have put thousands of hours research into helping perfect this model (Allen, 1996). They see the Assertive Discipline Model as being an approach that is direct and positive; it allows the teachers to teach and the students to be in an environment where they are able to lean to their best ability (Allen, 1996). The Carter’s model of Assertive Discipline relies on the teacher to punish unacceptable behaviour in a way in which will deter the child from repeating this behaviour again (Allen, 1996). A key point that Carter and Carter make in their model of Assertive Discipline is that the behaviour that is expected in the classroom is well known, there are warnings given to the students about their behaviour reminding them what is expected of them and then it is expected that the teacher following through with the consequence that adheres with the incorrect behaviour (Konza, Grainger & Bradshaw, 2001). Teachers using the Assertive Model will under no circumstances tolerate students that disrupt them the teacher, or other students from learning (Konza, Grainger & Bradshaw, 2001). Challenging inappropriate behaviour posed by children nowadays is one of the most daunting issued faced by teachers. Few matters affect teachers more directly and persistently than managing classroom behaviour (Jim Docking, 2000). Being able to manage a classroom I found is one of the most fundamental aspects in being able to teach today. Through this critique I will investigate the different studies relating to behaviour management within a classroom, looking pacifically at several behavioural issues within a classroom and where they stem from, as well as looking into studies based on the praise system and how it is used in schools. I want to look at fundamental theorists and give a brief insight into their studies through my own experience and research I have looked into.
As a student of education, I have been able to gather many ideas and opinions about practices and ideals I want to implement in my future classroom. My philosophies about education are still being formed and continually change with every class I visit and with every educator I encounter. My ideas, admittedly, come from random experiences and intangible texts, but as I gain more experience in the field through my courses, my philosophies about teaching will become more clearly defined. These few ideas I have now will undoubtedly be added upon as I enter student teaching and my professional career, nevertheless, they are concepts of which I hope to never lose sight.
An educational philosophy is a personal statement of a teacher’s goals or belief. A teacher comes to the classroom with a distinctive set of principles and ideals that affect how a student learns and expand the child’s potential in his or her venture into knowledge. I believe that education should be active, and focus on the whole child, rather than just the content or the teacher. The three (3) principles I believe that work harmoniously with my educational philosophy are the teacher acting as a facilitator to foster critical thinking, allowing the child’s natural curiosity to steer his or her learning for personal development, and
Students all have their own personalities, which affects their actions within the classroom. Many times, a students’ behavior is caused by outside factors causing them to act out with disruptive behaviors and disciplinary issues. During these times, a teacher must have a behavior management approach to deter similar behaviors in the future. Many first time teachers are unable to handle dealing with the behaviors and leave their jobs making it all the more important to come up with an effective behavior management approach to curtail those worrisome behaviors before it gets to that point (Sugai, 2009). In an effort to thoroughly discuss an efficient behavior management approach, a common disciplinary problem within classroom and the foundation of the issue will be considered. A combination of approaches may be to needed to stop behavioral issues, such as providing motivation and establishing rules and procedures in a clear way will deter behavioral issues. Finally, an in-depth look at the steps needed in order to implement the approach into the classroom.

Also, how Junie B. reacted to each style of teaching whether is was a positive or negative interactions and whether it had a positive or negative reaction correlating with it. After deciding what our topic was going to deal with we decided to pull examples from real life that also illustrated our main ideas, so, the group also pulled examples of classroom management from bulletin boards seen in classrooms at the schools Raymond F Brandes and Creston that included clip system of disciplinary action, expectations of reading comprehension in grade levels, and a smiley to frown face disciplinary system.
In Kohn’s book, Beyond Discipline: From Compliance to Community, the first chapter focuses on the different classroom management theories regarding students in the classroom. The chapter discusses how many of these theories are incorrect, and how educators need to look at them under a fine tooth come before implementing them in their own classrooms. Kohn finishes the chapter by discussing what teachers should think about regarding their students when implementing classroom management procedures.
All classrooms should have structured routines and clear procedures with set expectations. Some examples of routines are what students do upon arrival to the classroom, getting down to work, completing an assignment, group work, keeping occupied after work is finished, transitioning from one assignment or subject area to the next, and at the end of the day preparing for departures. These routines and procedures should be taught and practice with modeling for the students to have a visual of what is expected of them. The routines and procedures should be visible for students to review on a daily basis.
Teaching in my classroom will be student-centered and students will be held accountable for their learning and modification of his or her behavior.
It is a fact that classroom management and discipline has always been a challenge to pre-service teachers as they do not know and have not acquired the necessary skills to deal with unruly learners effectively. Often so, teachers in service use strategies that are incorrect or rather unacceptable; whether this is done intentionally or under certain desperation to gain control and respect of the learners. It is prevalent across the globe. Although the South African system has used corporal punishment for many years to maintain discipline and management in the classroom; there have always been other alternative ways which are effective and better as opposed to the harsh way of discipline. The Constitution of South Africa specifically banned the use of this harsh treatment because of the awareness that children are vulnerable and defenceless; therefore they are the ones who are at risk of being victims of crime, beatings and psychological trauma that are an ultimate result of being bullied by adults. My claim is that strategies used to maintain classrooms in public schools are not acceptable if they cause a negative effect to the development of our children. And I will argue that there are other alternatives that could be used to make sure that the classes run smooth and without causing any intimidation to either the learners or teachers in this industry, as the South African Journal of Education mentions that
Schools are required to produce behaviour management policies, (DfES, 2007) to promote positive behaviour that extends from the individual to the whole school community. This not only reflects the rules within the classroom, but also creates an ethos within the wider school, thus setting high standards for behaviour. If the core rules are explicit and the children are encouraged to make a ‘positive contribution,’ (DfES, 2003) such as develop their own classroom charter, and then learning can be effectively facilitated with a consistent framework for behaviour. (Ellis and Tod 2009) Furthermore, Chaplain (2010) emphasises that if the teacher refers to the classroom rules frequently, and the procedures for behaviour are applied consistently then it can significantly reduce or even eliminate minor
Classroom management and classroom discipline share a correlation with one another yet; they are uniquely different issues and should remain a separate focus of the teacher. (Cantor, 2006) Behavior and misbehavior also share a connection but represent different degrees of infraction. (Charles, 2008) This essay focuses on the differences and similarities of these topics and their relation to the classroom.
Lee Canter’s assertive discipline model is likely most often used in classrooms where the teacher operates under a legitimate authority base. While studies show that students learn best in classrooms where teachers display efferent or expert authority bases, I believe that there is some definite value in using a legitimate authority base when it comes to class discipline and management. The assertive discipline model encourages teachers to be proactive and anticipate that students will break the rules (Canter, ) Another main focus of Canter’s model is using assertive command, which means the teacher does not retreat to a nonassertive passive stance or to a hostile response when students misbehave, but rather repeats the rule to the student over and over before making a corrective action.
