Abstract
I looked at how students can enhance classroom management by: developing a positive mindset to increase achievements, becoming engaged to increase chances of learning, taking responsibility for learning to ensure that as much learning as possible is accomplished, being honest by maintaining academic integrity to ensure that accomplishments are recognized, participating in designing and maintaining classroom rules and procedures to create the right conditions to improve learning, being attentive during class presentations to create favorable conditions for learning, and respecting the authority of the teacher to create a suitable

According to Carol Dweck’s theory, if children and adults believe that with determination their intelligence will increase, their intelligence will indeed increase (Jacobson, 2013). I believe that students need to have a positive mindset to do well. Once student have a positive mindset and they complement it with a lot of hard work and persistence, the chances of students excelling in their school work will be significantly increased. Although there may be instances where students may be gifted academically and they may be able to excel without working very hard, I believe that in most cases, students who possess an optimistic mindset and have a good work ethic will perform better in school than students who display a negative mindset and do not show a lot of commitment to their work.
All students should be eager to attend class, should feel positive that they will learn, should expect to get assistance when they encounter difficulty, should not feel alone in their efforts, should contribute to the management of the class, and should complete their work satisfactorily (Emmer & Evertson, 2013). I think by students being eager to learn, it will put them on the path to learn, and it
A. The teacher classroom manages the classroom in an extremely positive manner, and is strong on positive reinforcements. When she speaks to her students, her voice is soft and calm which allows her students to remain calm to correct their behavior. Students are aware of the classroom expectations and the proper behavior when they are working with other students. When the class is transitoning between activities she is clear with what they are expected to do, and how it should look like. When the whole class is not able to complete the task she does ask them to correct the behavior and allows them a second opportunity to successfully transition. Positive classroom management shows that students behave in a positive way and are less likely to
Teachers and parents have dedicated their time to tell children that they are smart and talented every time they get a good grade. Praising children this type of way has had an impact on their lives. Dweck said “many students believe that intelligence is fixed, that each person has certain amount and that’s that”. Students with fixed mindset only care about how smart they look or how smart they appear. By having this fix mindset, they turn down the ability to learn new things. They believe that if you study hard, you are not smart enough, and that if you were smart things will come to you with no effort. This has made students lose their belief in oneself when they face complicated circumstance. Dweck says that the reason for kids to have a fixed mindset is “intelligence
In the article, “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids” by Carol S. Dweck, he states, “The students held hard work in high regard, believing that the more you labored at something, the better you would become at it” (23). What he means by this is that there are students who don’t try in academics or are naturally smart but just lose interest in school. The quote means that students who keep a goal in their mind, the better you will get at it. Dweck also states that “As we had predicted, the students with a growth mindset felt that learning was more important” (23). Again, the quote basically says that students who have a clear mindset on what goal they would like to accomplish, nothing would keep them from learning. Any student can be successful in their own ways, it's just about how they want their mindsets to be. If they have a growth mindset they can accomplish anything if they put themselves to
Intelligence can be developed through experience and learning. In Carol S. Dweck’s who is in fact a PhD expert in the field of psychology wrote an article, “Transforming Student’s Motivation to Learn,” she states, “Results showed that what students believe about their brains - whether they see their intelligence as something that’s fixed or something that can grow and change – has profound effect on their motivation, learning, and school achievement.” Essentially what this is illustrating is that having a fixed or growth mindset can minimize students from being terrified of failure and in addition faced and embrace their challenges rather than running from them. Students need to understand an intelligent mindset is a paramount pathway in becoming successful, and eventually one needs to not be easily discouraged at the first sight of a challenge, but become motivated and driven by failure, and in turn willing to work harder to accomplish something they want to succeed at. A perfect example of this is through Mike Rose’s school experiences, we can see how he demonstrates the concepts of a growth and fixed mindset.
attitude to learn. Students should also prepare for tests and do the homework to help
“In my research in collaboration with my graduate students, we have shown that what students believe about their brains – whether they see their intelligence as something that’s fixed or something that can grow and change – has profound effects on their motivation, learning, and school achievement” (Dweck 1). According to Carol S. Dweck who is a researcher and the author of the “Brainology Transforming Student’s Motivation to Learn,” each student has a different mindset. It is either fixed mindset or growth mindset. Students with fixed mindsets are the ones who believe that intelligence that intelligence has a limit. These students do not persevere, feel unintelligent, consider cheating, and are afraid of challenges. On the other hand, students
Psychologist Carol Dweck found that students perform better if they believe that they are intelligent “you can always greatly change how intelligent you are” than if they think “you have a certain amount of intelligence, and you really can’t do much to change it.” She also believes that when a student has a positive attitude, it makes them push themselves harder when others would desist. She believes that there is no limit on their learning potential and challenge is viewed as a way to improve themselves. ” They know that their intelligence can be built through experience and effort, and are not held back by the idea of inborn restrictions.”1
Many students believe that intelligence is fixed, that everyone is given a certain amount, but with practice, intelligence can be grown overtime. Recent research reveals several important factors in student success including, challenging the mind to learn, having a growth mindset, and overcoming personal fears and anxiety. Of these, the most important factors to student success are, challenging the mind to learn and overcoming personal fears and anxiety, because students that challenge the mind to learn enjoy challenging and complex tasks which helps develop and grow the
Teachers are not only expected to teach their students, but also provide an environment where everyone feels safe and can learn. Classroom management is a very important part of teaching. Students cannot learn in an unsafe, disruptive environment. This paper will discuss the strategy of SHAPING, how it is used to modify a student’s behavior, and give an example of how to modify a student’s behavior. This paper will also discuss my personal beliefs about classroom management, share rules and expectations for the classroom, rewards for individuals and the class, designing the classroom where the teacher is visible and there are no distractions, and discuss some classroom procedures and how they contribute to classroom management
I would have to agree with Adam Robinson claims, “Attitude is critical difference between smart students and their classmates.” I believe you have to have a positive attitude towards learning to be able to actually learn.
Another thing to reach success is to focus on myself and not what is going on around me. When I was younger I only cared to hang out with friends. School was not important to me, mainly because everything felt too hard for me. Even though I have brothers, they weren’t much of a help when it came to school. The story The Secret To Raising Smart Kids by Carol S. Dweck talked about two different mindsets people can have. One of them was a growth mindset and the other was a fixed mindset. To have a growth mindset is to know that your intelligence can be molded. To have a fixed mindset is to believe intelligence is something you are born with. I was always a students with a fixed mindset. “They thought that a person with talent or intelligence did not need to work hard to do well. Attributing a bad grade to their own lack of ability, those with a fixed mindset said that they would study less in the future, try never to take that subject again and consider cheating on future tests.” (lines 120-124 pg. 24) This quote says that a person with a fixed mindset would put themselves down my saying that other students don’t need to do as much work as they did. It also says that they would give
Classroom management is a key element to establish a successful learning environment in any classroom. An effective classroom management plan creates a positive learning environment. Classroom management is affected by the characteristics of the students and their behavior. Students’ behavior is influenced by their age, academic abilities, goals, interests, and home backgrounds (Evertson, Emmer, and Worsham, 2006). Teachers need a diverse array of classroom management skills to facilitate learning. A classroom with a proper management plan will spend less time in disciplining and more time in learning. Students in effectively managed classrooms know and follow clearly defined rules and routines. A classroom management plan should provide
A well-organized classroom management plan will be effective in creating a positive classroom environment which can help to activate students’ motivations and facilitate students’ learning. This classroom management plan is designed for a Stage 4 class, Year 8-3 in Mackenzie Secondary College.
To briefly summarize what the article “Brainology” describes of what student success is strived to achieve but by those who don’t doubt themselves in themselves what Dweck calls a fixed mindset. What defines a mindset is the different ways some can tolerate a feedback towards the effort given. Being average almost my whole elementary years I always thought there was nothing special here. I guess you can say my mindset was a fixed mindset of the potential I could have given to my life. The biggest threat to give students this sort of mind set that challenges that some face seem to be demoralizing not knowing failure is reflective trait that can improve their effort in the future. By one passage in this article destroys this thought by saying “intelligence can be developed opens students to love of the learning, a belief in the power of the effort and constructive determined reactions to setbacks”. Dwecks tests this by having a class take an IQ test divided those who scored well were told to be smart, those who
Effective classroom manager have success in teaching and student learning. As a teacher, I will use these 7 positive classroom techniques in my classroom by (Allred, 2008); 1. Learning is Relevant: 2. Code of Conduct: 3. Teach Positive Actions: 4. Instill Intrinsic Motivations: 5. Reinforce Positive Behaviors: 6. Engage Positive Role Models: 7. Always Be Positive. The government, administrators, politician, communities, and department of educations utilize numerous of techniques to improve student learning and student proficiency in classrooms. They have worked together and through research to find ways that are more effective outside and in the classroom. Therefore, the first one is relevant. 1. Learning is Relevant: The four elements that support the idea that learning is relevant are active participants, tutoring process, differentiating instructions and differentiating related to learning styles. According to Piaget’s theories (as cited by Lemlech, 2010) states, that active participation, the students ' learn because the instruction has a connection. In other words, if instructions have no use or relate to something that will benefit, it is from one ear and out the other ear. It is like browsing the Internet or Facebook. You stop to read what you want to read. Also, Vygotsky’s theory states, that tutoring process raise the level of learning and development. By discovering students ' talents, learning styles, and interests, teachers can adjust teaching methods
