(EPA) It was fairly recently disclosed to the public that the water supply on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was heavily contaminated with volatile organic compounds from June 1957 to the first of March, 1987. Specifically two water distribution systems on base, the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point water distribution systems, were discovered to have been contaminated with such volatile organic chemicals as Trichloroethylene (TCE), Tetrachloroethylene (PCE), Dichloroethylene (DCE), Vinyl Chloride, and other carcinogenic chemicals such as Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbensne and Xylene. During the period of contamination, marine personnel and service members along with their families living on base were exposed to these harmful contaminants through their bathing and drinking water. The volatile organic chemical tetrachlororethylene, a dry cleaning solvent, most likely entered the water supply from a nearby off-base cleaning company while the degreaser, trichloroethylene, presumably came from areas located on-base using various chemicals and solvents to clean the military equipment. The wells supplying the tainted water to the residents on base were tested and shown to have high levels of VOCs and various other
