This excerpt from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts’ (LSA) mission statement, “…provides students with adaptive skills to solve problems,” supports my objective of hopefully using mathematics as a nexus to solve some of the country’s inexcusable societal shortcomings. And as an aspiring pure mathematics major, this excerpt from the Department of Mathematics’ mission statement, “…to further the field of mathematics and bring its power to bear in the solution of problems for the good of mankind,” completely aligns with my passionate commitment to my objective. Feeling supported and having the same operational intents of the College and Department to which I hope to transfer and study lays the foundation for my attraction to LSA.

I am interested in working as a second grade teacher at South Row Elementary School for many reasons. After reading the mission statement I strongly believe that my educational philosophy matches the districts vision for their students. The small student population, as well as, the different sections of faculty allows for strong teacher to student relationships and opportunities for collaboration amongst faculty members.
The school is testing ground for the brain. I believe that the student should be exposed to new ideas, experiences, techniques and methods so as to further develop their own capacities to adapt, change, learn, and grow as people. One of the most important goals of the school, if not the most significant, is to develop literate and productive members of society, who are able to converse with a variety of issues using varied methods of communication and media. All students should be encouraged to make thoughtful contributions to society, no matter how large or small they may be. Also, the school is not confined to a

In order to achieve this, the curriculum should meet the specific needs of young adolescents. “The middle school curriculum must reflect a genuine concern for young adolescents by addressing self-esteem, self-identity, peers and friendships. Subjects should be taught through genuine, interesting, and relevant activities that are assessed authentically and that reflect both the diversity of learners and the usefulness and importance of the subject to contemporary society” (Manning & Bucher, 2012, p. 84). Teachers should be adamant in incorporating interesting and relevant examples when choosing what classroom materials to use. Apple Valley Middle School meets the unique needs of young adolescents by providing authentic instructional strategies such as service-learning experiences like the Knights Making a Difference Club. They encourage cooperative learning, debates on educational topics, field trips, and presentations that foster creativity, curiosity, and the development of social skills. Instruction “should capitalize on the skills, abilities, and prior knowledge of young adolescents; use multiple intelligences; involve students’ individual learning styles; and recognize the need for regular physical movement" (AMLE, 2010, p. 22). The school environment should be inviting, fair, supportive, and diverse. Families and the members of the community should be given the opportunity to actively support the teaching and learning
