According to ESPN NBA Senior Writer Ramona Shelburne, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver plans to address the "significant issue" of teams resting players. Silver has informed all teams that this issue will be a top priority in the NBA Board of Governors meeting on April 6th in New York. He also made it clear that teams that don't abide by the league's rules there will be "significant penalties."
The main team that have made this an ongoing issue at least as of late has been the Cleveland Cavaliers. A couple days ago, the Cavaliers rested their big three of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love against the Los Angeles Clippers. Both the general manager David Griffin and franchise player James have made it known that some players indeed need the rest. Especially, if in the long run the goal is a Championship. James, recently made the following statement that has caused quite a stir of controversy:
“I don’t think the NBA can do anything about it,” James

It's easy for us as outsiders to criticize these players when we aren't partaking in the activity they are.
Then, you have former players from past eras weighing on this issue as well. Most recently, former Utah Jazz star Karl Malone weighed in on NBA players resting with ESPN's Sage Steele:
Obviously, the perception of the NBA in that particular era was tougher. One could argue they game is much more fast paced today than ever. Which, it doesn't take a genius to make the inference that could be a reason for the recent need for rest for so many of ours stars today.
In no way am I making excuses for these guys. I understand there are some people that may have a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these stars play. So, if the star they decide to go watch that day misses what do they get in return? There should be some sort of agreement between the NBA owners/coaches and Silver for some sort of
More than 300,000 sports-related concussions occur per year. Most athletes recover from head injuries, like concussions, if they take the time to properly manage the injury. Injured athletes should be required to sit out for longer periods of time to allow time for the brain to heal completely. The lack of rest time may lead to multiple concussions, permanent brain damage, and loss of memory or focus. Athletes need rest time in order to get back on the field in the future.
The Cleveland Indians are a baseball team founded in 1894 (cleveland.indians.mlb.com). Although the name is obviously racist, in 1894 there unfortunately was not as large of public concern regarding the treatment of Native Americans. Now, the name is deemed to be offensive, as it should be. The logo depicts a Native American referred to as Chief Wahoo, an aspect of the team that also creates public scrutiny. For these reasons, the Cleveland Indians are changing their logo.
Initially, in the world of sports in 2016 it was a spectacular year. The 50 years dry streak for the Cleveland Cavaliers ended with them making history by defeating the Golden State Warriors who had also recently broken regular season records by going 73-9 (beating the previous record of 72-10) by coming back from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA finals. After the Cleveland Cavaliers ended their dry streak, another team did the same. The Chicago Cubs ended the most infamous drought in American pro sports. After 108 years the Chicago Cubs won in game seven of the MLB finals which sparked worldwide celebrations from across the world. If “success” in context to the sports world is defined by success and setting new records, 2016 was definitely a success
Rumors are swirling around the web that the Miami Heat is eyeing 5 free agent players who can helped them improve their 3-point shooting skills. Although, the Miami heat were doing better, finishing 27th in the last season in 3-point field goal percentage at 33.6 percent. But for the Heat these all figures are not enough, today’s ballgames have evolved into something different where most NBA teams value the 3-point shots more than ever. They now seeing the 3-point shots as a potential deadly weapon, a kind of weapon that has the potential to win a game. So how can this South beach team like the Miami Heat can improve their 3-point shooting season this offseason?
ference Championship and to within a point of first place. On a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being a perfect score, the Vanguard scored an 84.15. One DCI corps, The Cavaliers, made it within 85 hundredths of a point from perfection, perfection, a few years ago, while maintaining an Olympic level effort for their show.
Did you know that over five percent of student athletes are concussed each year? Concussions are a serious injury to the head which can in turn lead to permanent brain damage or in some cases even death. Athletes should sit out longer in order to allow the brain to heal completely; healing allows for a second concussion to be prevented as well as the severe long and short term effects of the concussion to be limited and/or avoided. Healing would also help for the lightening the risk of further damage to the brain to occur in the athlete.
Sports related concussions have become an increasing problem among young athlete, especially seen among athletes who take part in high contact sports such as football. Concussions can be defined as an impulse blow to the head.1 There has been a growing amount of studies about sports concussions, which have provided a variety of evidence-based practice about athletes safe return to play.1 The research to date suggest a common theme on managing a player’s return to play reflecting players should ‘rest until symptom free.’2 Athletes resting allows for the brain to recover and be able to re-establish neurometabolic balances and restore ideal neurological function.2 Many high school athletes are not see taking time for complete rest, including rest from studying, video games, and texting, which can further cause a delay in return to play, which makes it necessary for health care providers, coaches, players, and parents to have a direct understanding of the recovery process of a concussion. 1,2,3 The goal of this study was to investigate the knowledge of varsity football players and coaches about concussion symptoms, along with identifying players suffering from a concussion, based on the current summary and protocol tools provided by Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) and King Devick tests.
It is important for the athletic directors and other authoritative figures in men’s basketball to strive for a common goal and establish a better sense balance among those in the basketball environment by changing the contradicting expectations and policies of the NCAA. Some say basketball players have been taken advantage of for far too long and ask “how much longer are universities willing to wait [the] before students see them as a threat and an aid to the issue rather than a source of education and athletic support”? Neglecting the issue has only postponed its significance to emerge as more relevant. By helping address this issue with urgency will allow the players to feel acknowledged and help create a solution for everyone’s benefit to the issue at
AAU basketball provides a very competitive environment for young basketball players; with an increase focus on skill level development it can be viewed as the extremely important tool that it should be. According to Kevin Clark a writer for the Wall Street Journal, “for some time, coaches have grumbled that the AAU’s emphasis on building stars and playing games over practicing produces a lot of talented prospects who have great physical skills but limited knowledge of the fundamentals (Clark, 2009).” Outspoken professional basketball analyst Charles Barkley gave his opinion, “the worst thing that ever happened to basketball (Sorensen, 2015).” He pointed out in a televised broadcast how there are too many AAU games and not nearly enough practice hours being put
“Should athletes be paid to play?” By Jared Walch, Blake Marshall, The Daily Utah Chronicle
Because athletes do not take the responsibility to manage their injuries it leads to long term health concerns over a period of time. “The NFL must go further and clarify the rules even more, Durando contends, especially when it comes to hits on defenseless players, and they should continue to focus on decreasing the number of concussions to players in order to protect a player's long-term health” (par. 1). Stu Durando, a sportswriter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, acknowledges the fact that the National Football League has more work to do in decreasing concussion injuries. He not only stresses the cases of concussions, but shows a motive to help protect players along with their future mental wellness. Given these points, brain injuries tend to display as athletes age. Post Concussion Syndrome is what typically disarrays a former football player in the long run. Post-concussion syndrome is a complex disorder in which a variable combination of post-concussion symptoms — such as headaches and dizziness — last for weeks and sometimes months after the injury that caused the concussion. Post-concussion syndrome can include psychological, physical and emotional problems including headaches, difficulty focusing on tasks, dizziness, or simply a state of mind that some would describe as “not feeling yourself”. “Sleepless nights were followed by partial amnesia. His grades plummeted. As his memory faltered, he grew embarrassed and anxious. Football had been the center of his life, but now he couldn't even exercise. Finally, he withdrew from college. Most players, like Reed, will recover completely after a period of headaches, sleepiness and difficulty focusing in class. Others--one in 10, some experts say--suffer long-term symptoms. They are more likely to develop post-concussion syndrome, where fogginess, headaches, poor
Athletes of all ages are playing with some sort of injury or concussion. The main reason athletes are never fully recovered is the aspect of those surrounding the athlete. The athlete just wants to be able to help his team and show how strong they are. Studies show “42 percent of kids said that they have downplayed or hidden injuries so that they could keep playing” (Murray, 2014, para. 6). This is how athletes today think they are being tough but in reality it can lead to more serious consequences. The consequences are not always short term they can alter your life the rest of your days. Athletes just think about what is happening right now not looking to the future.
How should the professional team respond to fans that put this pressure on their athletes? The best solution is to give them a warning or to not let them come to their games anymore. It’s the best way to be professional about it and so the players don’t get hurt from the situation. “For
In spite of this, there is past evidence that the league was successful before the one and done rule and there are numerous examples of athletes who became top players in the NBA. For instance, In recent memory, there has been Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady, Rashard Lewis, Lebron James and Tyson Chandler, Amar’e Stoudemire. 5 of those players will be in the NBA Hall of Fame in a couple of years. There are over 57 all-star selections between these players and 6 MVPS. The NBA also now has better tools to prepare athletes for the life of being a pro athlete as seen in the Rookie Transition Program, which helps rookies become accustomed to the NBA life and transition them into becoming a public leader (Remme). In addition to this, there are the numerous veterans that litter even the youngest of teams to help young rookies through the process. Even the ripe Bulls, who have an average age of 24 have a mentor in Robin Lopez, who has spent 9 years in the NBA and has played for over 5 teams in his
Some may say that it is okay to do what you want, but eventually there comes a time when you need to do what you were meant to do. The society we live in demands people to possess a variety of talents and desires. Not everyone yearns to go to college. Not everyone will have a six figure job. Not everyone covets to be a business executive. Not everyone can be a starter and there is no shame in that. If someone finds himself on the bench, the crowd is presumably perceiving one’s skills just can’t compete with his teammates. Yet, it would be the team suffering in the absence of all bench players. These players who observe from the sidelines are like the foundation of a house; nobody thinks about what they do for the team and they aren’t seen as
