I am here today to speak to you, the governing body of Ormiston Six Villages Academy, about an idea I have had to get the students in touch with the environment by joining a climate change campaign.
Everyday, people are waking up to climate change. What scientists predicted decades ago is happening right now. And we have little time left to preclude desolation. But those in power have not yet woken up,from their so called “dream” and those that have are unwilling to act. Following on from the ‘People’s Climate March’ in September 2014, the ‘Time to Act on Climate Change March’ on March 7th 2015 brought people together again on the streets of London to demand real change from the politicians. 2015 is going to be a crucial year for the climate because in December governments will all come together in Paris to strike a new deal for the climate. Our voice must be heard!
For many reasons the school will benefit from being a part of the climate change campaign for example; Students will gain an understanding of what is going on in the world and it will boost the school’s reputation. How? You might ask.

For example, just turning off the lights when they don’t actually need to be on. Sitting in a dim room for 50 minutes is better than damaging the Earth we live on,right ? As well as turning off computers when they are not in use, just shutting down the monitor isn’t helping anyone. In order to make any real effect then computers and interactive white boards should be switched off at the plug when they are not in use. I understand that it is a busy school and rooms tend to busy for the majority of the day, but there will always be a room that is empty and even if its for a little while it will help. Doing little things like this will reduce the school’s carbon footprint and make us all the more suitable participants of this
For example, children could submit papers and other typed assignments online. Teachers could also promote smaller fonts and larger margins for projects they want us to print. The school could also charge less money for printing double sided (15 cents per double sided page vs. 20 cents per 2 pages). This would halve the paper we use in printing. Moreover, the school could also make the attendance online. As every week every teacher wastes a sheet of paper this could drastically reduce the schools paper usage. Finally, we could promote GOOS paper and writing on both sides of every sheet as well as always recycling. If we follow all this, our school could become extremely environmentally
addressing climate change. Global climate change means it is a global problem, so one nation or
In undergrad, I volunteered my time as a teacher for the Saturday Science Academy on the campus of Charles R. Drew University. My work with the high school students reminded me that to make a difference, you must first care about the individual and understand their circumstances. The Saturday Science
The world’s climate is changing, and the effects of it will not only affect the inhabitants and the planet, but also humans. Everyone usually only pays attention to the weather on a weekly or even a monthly basis. However, humans don’t pay attention to the changes that they are causing. Very few people actually accept that they are the ones who are causing it and that they are also the ones that can help with the issue. It is time to take action on this problem that will only continue to cause horrible consequences and the only way to do that is having humans change their ways. Even starting with the smallest way can have a dramatic change if everyone is doing it.
concerned of the effects climate change could have on the world. There is so much evidence that climate change exist so we need to find a way to stop climate change so the effects of climate change won’t happen. We soon learned that the cause of climate change could have been through greenhouse gases. There are different types of greenhouse gases, but the one we’re going to talk about is carbon dioxide. Greenhouse gases (which are located below the atmosphere) are gases that allow light from the sun to pass through the gases and some light/heat back out into space, but a certain amount of light gets trapped on the earth. This is called the greenhouse effect.
I think it’s great that you are trying to change your behavior because it will not only benefit you, but the way your family lives also. You are instilling routines and practices into your daily routine to help maintain your behavior and you have also made it a family activity which further motivates you to implement this behavior in your life. Regarding the previous attempts, were there any consistent factors that stopped your attempts to be physically active? For example, was there no time to fit in some physical activity or was exercising something that you felt took too much time and effort to do and dropped it? A model that can help you maintain the behavior is the theory of reasoned action model. It is an effective model that allows for
As Earths average temperature increases every year, the discussion of climate change has become a significant topic in the scientific community. Human activities such as powering factories, running automobiles or something as simple as burning wood for heat, emit dangerous greenhouse gases. What makes these greenhouse gases so detrimental is that they absorb the heat radiating off of Earth and keep it in the lower atmosphere creating a “blanket” of warmth around the Earth’s surface. This causes a drastic increase in the Earths average temperature. Due to the rise in temperature, the polar caps have been melting faster than ever, this is dangerous not only because of the risk of floods and sea level increase but ocean water will become less saline and ecosystems will be destroyed, impacting humans just as much as marine life. In the article, Understand faulty thinking to tackle climate change by George Marshall, Marshall states that most people in our world today do not care about climate change because it will not affect them, “Which points to the real problem: climate change is exceptionally amorphous, … no deadlines, no geographic location, no single cause or solution.” (Marshall 2014). Because the author makes it clear that climate change is indeed a great plight, and fails to be acknowledged by people, it is a significant matter that should be discussed
The government can subsidize companies that improve technology to eliminate fossil fuel usage, which could be key to reversing climate change. When fossil fuels are eliminated the Earth could reverse climate change in just years. The government should also work to educate the public about the issue, however cannot tackle this alone. Harvard President, Drew Faust says, “Universities have a crucial role to play, acting through research and education” (Powell). With the help of universities, the government can educate the public about the impacts of climate change and how to conserve energy usage. Most of the population does not know that the Ozone layer absorbs the Sun’s radiation and when it is destroyed, less radiation is absorbed and more is released to the Earth. In a study performed by Yale, the respondents were graded based on their knowledge of climate change; over 52% of the respondents were given an F based on what they knew (Leiserowitz). Advertisements about climate change, that have a sentimental effect on people’s emotions, can be a great way to educate the public. Also, educate younger generations from the start of their learning period. Teaching and building good habits, while generations are still young, could bring change over the course of
We must set negotiating parameters for the sales team, analyze our current agreements to ensure compliance, work with IT and legal to force compliance for all non-compliant situations, and develop a contract management system going forward that tracks not only the customer’s contract compliance, but ours as well.
Did you know that the United States is the second largest contributor of CO2, and the less concerned about it? Climate change has been a problem for decades, but just recently we start to see how big of a problem climate change is, and can be. Climate change is one of the biggest problems that we are facing right now, even if keep trying to act like is nothing. Everybody, the people, the government, and big companies are a big contributor of this phenomenon. The more we keep denying its effects, the more we are going to regret it later, and going to wish that we could go back and try to fix the issue. You going to know one day, and its going to be late. Climate change should be the U.S government main focus this decade and the ones to come. Climate change can affect a country in every way economically, destroyed …., cause a lot of deaths.
D) Finally, by turning off unused power sources such as tv's and computers, again you will be helping the environment as well as saving money on energy bills.
As a kid who has cared about nature his entire life, and an avid modern environmentalist for four years and counting, this issue has been at the center of my psyche for quite some time. I have seen public perspective on this issue change before my eyes. From the original rejection of Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth movie on “global warming” to personally marching alongside 300,000 people in our nation's capital to raise awareness on climate change. However, despite all of these avenues the issue is still spoken about as this distant idea that eventually will be a disaster. Many politicians and news networks speak of the need for slow implementation of policies and programs to right our environmental wrongs. The best way to paraphrase the common narrative of this issue would be to say, climate change is going to happen down the road, it will probably be bad and trying to fix it in the near future would be a good idea. That weak call to action shoves climate change onto the long to-do list of the leaders of our world. Not only does it not create the urgency needed to actually curb the effects of our environmental ignorance, but it does not accurately describe the threat of a changing climate. Treating this like a political issue will not allow for the rigorous changes needed to address such a problem in the timely manner that is required.
How can one change the world? Through action! During the month of December, a forum on the climate action was held jointly by Youth Action, FAir 4 All (Fair Air Coalition), and the 10 by 2020 campaign. The discussion focused on the current steps being taken to reduce climate change.
Climate change also known as global warming, is the rise in the Earth's surface temperatures. Even though the rise in the Earth's surface temperature may be slight it can still have a wide range of effects on ecosystems, rising sea levels, severe weather events, and droughts. A staggering amount of scientist believe that climate change is caused mainly due to the human use of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels are used, carbon dioxide is released along with other greenhouse gases into the air. Those gases trap the heat within the atmosphere. Some examples of ways humans use fossil fuels are oil, coal, and natural gas. Humans depend on theses fossil fuels to function everyday life. For example we use these fuels to heat our homes, run our vehicles, and are used in the power industry to produce electricity.
George Smith wrote that Thomas Jefferson believed the distribution of power among federal, state, county, and local agencies was indispensable to America’s “system of fundamental balances and checks for the government.” (Smith, 2012) Today federal, state, and local governments still play important roles in the operations of public schools through providing funding, policies, scope and organization of school systems. Through the years, the federal government has increased their position in governing public schools, state government works to guide and offer clarification, and local government is responsible for the day to day affairs.
