One of the main ideas conveyed in Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman is that equality between genders is extremely important, breaking tradition to get to the point where everyone has equality is imperative. Vidya is a 15-year-old girl whose family has just suffered a tragedy, because of this and because she lives in India during World War II Vidya and her family must move in with her injured fathers, extremely tradition relatives. Before her father's accident, Vidya had many freedoms including going to school, reading and going wherever she wanted in her house. In this new house, Vidya is no longer allowed to go wherever she wants, she is stuck on the first floor, but the library is on the second floor and Vidya's only escape
Based on what I read, I believe the writer basically treats the animals by their natural instincts. Though he mostly makes Rikki the hero. This proves the author favors Rikki and makes him this big hero everyone looks up too. The other thing is that the author treats Nag and Nagania a little unfairly. For example, when Rikki tried to get Nagania from killing his family and the other animals, he sneaked up to Nagania’s eggs and killed her unborn babies. Something I noticed in the story was that Rikki was a little too harsh to Nagania because she decided not to kill Rikki’s family when she saw he had her eggs, but Rikki killed Nagania’s eggs anyway.
In today’s society it is still common to assign gender stereotype to specific career paths. Careers such as a construction worker, mechanic and electrician may be gender stereotyped as a man’s career and careers such as nursing, secretary, elementary school teachers and child care workers may be seen as a woman’s profession. I chose to analyze the concept of “ The Glass Escalator” by Adia Wingfield and relate it to two different news articles “ More men enter Fields Dominated by Women.” By Shaila Dewan and Robert Gebeloff and the article “Kudos for the Black Male Nurse” by Benjamin Greeen Jr. It has been encouraged for both men and women to take on occupational fields regardless of gender and race stereotypes. In Adia Wingfield’s study she also focuses on the inequality based off of race and gender in the work field for advancement in the a workplace. I decided to focus more on the subject of men just entering these different fields as an accomplishment.
A Better Understanding for a Better Future One source stated, “Cultural identity is a broader term: people from multiple ethnic backgrounds may identify as belonging to the same culture” (Trumbull and Pacheco 9). People should find their cultural identity to understand their cultures beliefs and values. In order to understand one’s cultural identity, he or she needs to understand what the term means. According to one source, cultural identity can be defined as “ a broader term: people from multiple ethnic backgrounds may identify as belonging to the same culture”
Some believe in a higher power, a God, who created all things and brought this life we
Several years ago, Amy Chua’s book: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother has triggered a lively debate about the strict parenting style. In the book, it is mentioned that Chua sets rules and restrictions, such as no sleepovers, practising music instruments every day, etc. As a result, her daughters achieve excellent grades in schools (Goodin ¶2-3). Chua’s parenting style is categorized as authoritarian. In Hong Kong, Chua’s style is popular. Parents put a lot of pressure on their children. Starting from primary level, children are asked to attend extra tutorials. From the parents’ eyes, “Practice makes perfect”. Hence, children will become more competitive. However, westerners oppose her methods. Some believe that giving no freedom to children is not conducive to one’s academic performance.
Nude Descending Staircase, no.2 is by Marcel Duchamp who is best known as a painter and mixed media artist associated with Cubism, Dadaism and Surrealism, although he himself avoided any alliances. His work is characterised by its humour and the variety and unconventionality of its media. He was passionate in his belief that ideas should be given more value than worldly things, a revolutionary notion that would resonate with a later generation.
Many authors have different types of writing styles, some famous authors, Roald Dahl, and Edgar Allen Poe are no exception. With their unique writing styles you are transported into the story along with all of the characters. For many authors, their writing styles are influenced by the authors backstory. Edgar Allen Poe’s early life was laced with tragedy and sadness, whereas Roald Dahl’s life was happier with better memories. Because of this Roald Dahl's stories tend to be more happy and adventurous, although he wrote some horror tales for fun. Edgar Allen Poe used horror and suspense for almost all of his writing.
In the memoir, “By Any Other Name,” Santha Rama Rau explores the British attempt to replace Indian culture with the “superior” British culture and her resistance to this change. The speaker depicts this man vs. society conflict by sharing the story of a culture clash she experienced at a British run day school. The conflict is first seen when the headmistress decides to change the girls’ names, as indicated when she states, “Suppose we give you pretty English names” (Rama Rau 35). By calling English names pretty, the headmistress is implying their Indian names are not pretty, and thus inferior to British names. She said it was because Indians cheat…So I don’t think we should go back to that school. Another instance where the conflict is evident
Majority of African American women get judged on the day to day basis. When scrolling through social media there will be large amounts of individuals who will bully or even belittle a colored female because of the natural kinks of her hair, her sense of fashion, the full shaped curves of her body, and the color of her skin . The poem “Still I Rise” by the well-known poet, Maya Angelou, specifically describes the reasons why she had so much confidence; even if she were to be judged by her appearances and mindset. This poem is about embracing females, but it mainly introduces similar life situations that many African American women have experienced. The symbols and point of view that Angelou specifically added in her poem made her readers realize that there are many meanings to this poem.
“I’m Nikhil” (Jhumpa Lahiri 96) these are the words that Gogol uttered for the first
In Privilege, Shamus Khan examines how the once exclusively prestigious boarding school, St. Paul’s, is now open to a more diverse influx of elite students. This includes lower income individuals, nonwhites, and women. Even with this newfound openness, there is still a persisting inequity present. One prominent type of inequality at the institution is the gender differences displayed. These gender inequities are evident through the double standards of academic achievement and the portrayal of sexuality of the girls at St. Paul’s.
The question I know of you have asked yourself at some point; Does God exist? Well this question opens the door to bigger questions of life: Where did we come from? Why are we here? Do we serve a true purpose? What happens after we die? The question of the existence of god is fundamental, but truly is something that has been misconstrued. Through the duration of this paper I will discuss two arguments on the existence of God, and the premises and versions that follow both of these arguments.
Traditions throughout culture change with time, yet in most instances, a handful of people refuse to change their methods or beliefs. In “Dead Man’s Path,” Chinua Achebe creates a changing society and presents a group of people who are unwilling to change their way of life and adapt. Achebe uses symbols, allusions, characters, and setting development to give the reader an interpretation of the changes made throughout society that creates a conflict between a new generation and an old generation.

In India love is often forbidden due to the caste systems upon the people living within the country. A caste system is class structure that is determined by birth; if a person in India is born with poor parents than they are going to be poor as well, the same distinction goes for a person who is born with rich parents. In Mahasweta Devi’s short story Dhowli, the main character Dhowli is referred to as an untouchable which is of the lowest caste. She becomes involved in a relationship with a very wealthy Misra boy. Dhowli gets pregnant from the Misra boy and becomes an outcast even more so than she already is, due to her involvement in a relationship that is forbidden in India.
