Clinical practicum has provided a valuable study opportunity to me.When I took care of a living person in wards,I could apply the skills which are learnt from indoor lessons in school and books.Also,I could achieve more knowledge outside textbooks.However,I find that there is a difference between the real situation and theory.In ward,nurses have to be multitasking and need to manage several patients,time is precious to them.Nurses have to make an effort to save time from different ways.To give an example,in the ward I worked in this clinical practicum,nurses connected the syringe to the end of tube and administered drug to a patient with nasogastric tube by giving pressure to pump drug solution down the tube.Thus ,the procedure finished in a few seconds.I learnt this method from them and applied it in my practice.However,I was stopped by the supervisor teacher during one of my practise.She told us that it was wrong to administer drug by using pressure.She then asked me for the right method.I was shocked in that time because I learnt this way from the …show more content…
I also concern on the time needed to keep patient at semi-fowler’s position after feeding.One time,a patient wanted to take rest and ask me to posite her bed in horizontal level within half an hour after nasogastric feeding of milk.According to Lord and Harrington(2005),elevating the head during feeding could prevent aspiration of gastric content.Gravity reduces the chance of gastric contents from regurgitation from the distended stomach and prevents gastroesophageal reflux(Metheny and Stewart, 2002)
The contributions I have made to my school include participating in volleyball from the fall of 2014 to present. For volleyball, we have collected food for the food pantry, conducted a youth night to teach younger children the fundamentals of volleyball, and a breast cancer awareness night which included raising money to fund breast cancer research. I also participate in dance and softball. For the 2016 softball season I was chosen for the spirit award because of my positive attitude and energy during games and practices. Through hard work and dedication the dance team won conference champs at the 2016 conference competition. I was chosen by my coaches for the Limitless Leader Award and the Sportsmanship Award in 2015 and last year. I have earned a varsity letter in
As a person I don’t just show leadership and service, I also have good morals. The three characteristics that describe me the most are good citizenship, responsibility, and respect. To start, when I went down to Atlanta for my youth group’s mission trip, I showed good citizenship. While we were down there, we helped out with the Atlanta Food Bank. Although we weren’t the only ones helping that day, we were very productive. We had numerous tasks to accomplish like checking the item’s packaging, checking expiration dates, organizing the items into different boxes, and weighing the boxes. In the end, the items weighed over 9,000 pounds. This shows I’m a good citizen because I don’t just care about Central Pennsylvania, but I also care about America
This submission is going to focus on the nursing care that I gave on two placement simulations and one shift on placement, placing emphasis on oral care, bed bathing and medication management. It will outline the fundamental aspects of clinical nursing skills that have taken place in my setting. This will also highlight the learning process taken place and how it helped me to enhance my knowledge, and ethical values in order to deliver quality and safety of care. Using other sources of current literature, I will use a reflective model to discuss how I have achieved the necessary level of learning outcome. My first clinical experience for this nursing program was completed at New England Rehab Hospital. I walked in with some clinical experience but no experience in the realm of nursing or certified nursing assistants (CNA). During that first semester we followed CNAs to understand their job and gain basic nursing skills like bathing patients, bed making and other daily tasks. It was useful and I’m still happy we were able to have that experience. A situation that made me uncomfortable during that semester that one particular CNA never sanitized his hands when entering and exiting a patient’s room. In most hospitals and nursing facilities there is a “pump in, pump out” rule to abide by when entering and exiting a patients room rule to ensure health care workers are not spreading bacteria to themselves and other patients. This particular CNA admitted to me that he pretends to push the hand sanitizer and rub his hands together without actually getting any sanitizer in his hands. His reasoning was that he found it overly drying to use the sanitizer so frequently despite the hospital providing lotion as well.
Critical thinking and clinical judgment are important skills that professional nurses use in every day clinical setting. In 2012, a mix method qualitative study by Dr. Jeanne Mann was done to evaluate the effectiveness of educational strategy to develop clinical judgment skills in nursing students. The purpose of this journal is to reflect on my experience and skills gained during my clinical placement at Ben Taub Hospital. On my first clinical day, I was excited and nervous at the same time. My first placement was in the PREOP/PACU area. I was assigned to help a patient who had been in the PACU area going on 2 days. Normally, once the patient comes from surgery they are only in the PACU area for a short period of time before they are discharged home or given a bed in another area of the hospital. This particular patient still had not received an assignment for a bed. The physicians would make their rounds to come check on him daily. The patient was a 28-year-old Hispanic male, non-English speaking, he had a hemicolectomy. He had a NG tube, urinary Foley catheter, and a wound vac. My preceptor had just clocked in and she needed to check on the patient’s vitals and notes from the previous nurse. Once she introduced me to the patient and explained while I was there, she then asked me to check his vitals. (Vital signs indicate the body’s ability to regulate body temperature, maintain blood flow, and oxygenate body tissues. Vital signs are important indicators of a client’s overall health status (Hogan, 2014). I froze for a quick second. I have practiced taking vitals numerous of times and I knew I could do it correctly. I started with the temperature first, when I was quickly corrected on a major mistake I had made by my preceptor. Over the past three and a half years of undergraduate education, I have received a very comprehensive education that has prepared me to function as a professional nurse after graduation next week. I have appreciated and truly enjoyed taking courses both within and outside of the University of Southern Maine nursing curriculum, and don’t believe I am able to count the ways in which this education has challenged me to become an enhanced learner and well-rounded person. During our return demonstration, we all felt like we needed to look to our instructor for guidance in what we should do. The reason for this was because we all lacked the confidence to feel like we knew what we were doing. If I could do it again, I would have liked to have been more knowledgeable about the scenario so that I could be more confident.
I have many experiences in the medical field dealing with all different age groups with many different kind of medical conditions. I also have many experiences in different settings. Which include home, hospital and doctor offices settings. A particular medical condition involving my child whom was the patient comes to mind. My child who is Type one Diabetic, Insulin dependent, was hospitalized with streptococcus in the past. Due to the streptococcus, her diabetes was begining difficult to control. In result, she went into Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). As soon as she was settled into her bed on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), she had to urinate. Before my visit to the clinical facility, I expected to have a hands-on experience with the clients. I was excited to practice the skills I learned during the labs at school. I was also nervous about working by myself with a client. I was not sure how the patients would act towards me but I was prepared for both positive and negative reactions.

Cancer survivorship transitioning is a process for the patient and family unit. Patients and families navigate to a “new normal”. Current transitioning from oncology care to primary care leaves a gap in continuity of care. Patients must adapt to a change in the health care regimen. Patients and their families may feel anxiety, returning to primary care, or patients and their families may have psychological distress as vigilance becomes more ominous in primary care. Cancer survivors transitioning from oncology care to primary care at a rural Minnesota health care facility may not receive the same vigilance of all the biopsychosocial elements obtained in oncology care; there is no standardization of screening for psychological distress by a cancer survivor in primary care unless patient and/or family self-reports or provider recognizes apparent symptoms of the psychological distress.
Starting the Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelorette of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Jacksonville University in June 2015 was a simple transition for me. I had graduated an Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) program in December 2014 and became a licensed RN in January 2015. I had just gotten hired for my first nursing position the month prior to the start of class and had not yet started working. I was very much still in student mode. While this makes it a bit easier to learn and process information in a classroom setting, I had no real world experience to help guide me. Through the knowledge I have gained as a student at Jacksonville University I have become a competent and well-rounded nurse. I am able to quickly problem solve and utilize critical thinking to identify and rectify issues. I have even put together, and will be presenting, and presentation about nursing practice for staff members at the facility where I work.
