I would like to take this time to have the opportunity to formally give thanks for the kindhearted support of you have for Miami-Dade College, its bright future individuals that can make a better for all. I personally feel encouraged to have the hope to pursue my dreams in becoming a Clinical Psychologist, and with this generous donation towards my educations and many other like myself I could achieve my goal. Our existence, as the most developed species on Earth, relies on intelligence and determination to understand how our body functions and what we can do to help with its constant battle for survival. Diseases that were once deemed rare are becoming extremely common. With no cures, many patients’ lives are endangered. Being born in a generation full of technological advancements, I believe that, with my passion for biology and inquisitiveness for the world of biomedical science, now is the time to engage in this global challenge to develop easier and better ways to live our lives.
Having pursued employment opportunities that allowed me to make a positive difference on the lives of the less fortunate, the Counselling Psychology course at University of East London is an obvious field that will allow me to continue these desires. Ultimately, this course allows me to change the lives of people and obtain my goals. The course prepares me for employment as a professional clinician, and grants me the ability to continue the promotion of well-being.
I’ve always loved the thrill of a challenge, and what’s more challenging than attempting to study the most mysterious thing known to mankind: the human brain? Dr Oliver Sacks said ‘If a man has lost a leg or an eye, he knows he has lost a log or an eye; but if he has lost a self – himself – he cannot know it, because he is no longer there to know it.’ Without memory, what are we at all? Memory makes us the person that we are; we build from our past experiences and use them to adapt our personality, and the complexity of it all is what intrigues me to pursue psychology at university and into a career as a neuropsychologist. In 2009 a family member of mine was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. This was one of the first elements that sparked
Multiple years of research and field experience as well as my undergraduate coursework in Psychology, Counseling, and General Education has provided me with ample skills to be successful at the graduate level in the School Psychology program offered at Francis Marion University. Working within the school system with students with mental health needs and exceptionalities has been a dream of mine since I was in high school. I am confident the School Psychology program at Francis Marion University will provide me with the skill set needed to make my dream a reality and become the best School Psychologist I can be.
I have always been interested in psychology, especially clinical psychology since I wanted to help people suffering from psychological issues during my high school years. This long-standing motivation brought me into a double-major undergraduate program in Guidance and Psychological Counseling at Zirve University in Turkey. I successfully completed this program with even high honors degree and am a current MS student in the department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling at Middle East Technical University (METU), which is a very prestigious institution with its top ranked programs in Turkey. Besides pursuing my master’s degree, I am a research assistant in Mustafa Kemal University.
I firmly believe in myself, in my capabilities, in my skills, in my character, and in my integrity. I also firmly believe in my abilities to achieve my educational and personal goals. I intend to achieve my goal of receiving Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. I will pursue this area of study in college, focusing on the necessary course work.
Through the last two years as a student at Manchester Community College, I have been able to experience numerous classes and meet wonderful professors. In my first semester of college, I decide to take a general psychology class with Dr. Francine Rosselli-Navarra. She taught me that psychology is a science, which studies our minds and behaviors. After that class I knew that I did not just want to study the physical feature of the brain and the brain process, but how the interactions with and within our brains that produce our cognitive functions. After completing that psychology class I realized that I did not wish to be a biology major anymore, instead I wished to study in the field of Neuroscience, which is a combination of both biology and psychology.
As a first generation college student, I found it quite difficult navigating through a four year institution during years I attended Northwestern State University. From the struggles of financial stability to the challenge of balancing school and personal life with little to no guidance, the journey through my collegiate career was quite troublesome to say the least. As an African American male with a father who was incarcerated, I already felt as if a stigma had been placed on me that I would succumb to the typical stereotype of multiple children out of wedlock and the distribution of narcotics as a primary source of income. With that in my mind and the hopes of my family on my shoulders, I set out and accomplished my goal of graduating from
I am planning to complete a masters in counseling after I finish my undergraduate degree at Carlow University, so the exercise to research graduate schools was useful and timeous. I chose local schools as I have a family and will not be able to travel outside of Pittsburgh. Duquesne University’s graduate program is the first I looked into.
It is my strong desire to attend Fielding Graduate University APA (American Psychological Association) accredited doctoral program in clinical psychology. I have always been intrigued by the human mind for as long as I can remember, specifically the psychopathology of it. I truly enjoy conducting psychological research, learning about psychopathology and how to treat it. While conducting research and learning, it is important to remember that the purpose of psychology isn’t to predict a person’s thoughts, actions, and behaviors, but to understand them. There are dozens of events that occurred in my twenty-five years of life that led me to this meaningful choice of pursuing a doctorate. The two most significant events were when I was in the
I would like to be a mental health counselor because I am deeply empathetic; to me, it is rewarding to connect with others on a personal level in my work, and I see that relationship as the essence of counseling. I want to make a positive lasting impact on the lives of others, by listening to, valuing, working with, and teaching them. “People” has always been my answer to “what do you want to do when you grow up?” As a child, I saw teachers as role models who taught me about morality, friendship, and responsibility; as a college student, I admired counseling staff who, despite the counseling center being understaffed and facing rising rates of mental illness on campus, never failed to listen to their patients; as a young adult, I recognize that empathy is my strongest personality trait, and that it is important to me that I use it in my professional life. Although the professions that I have considered in my life varied over the years, the core truth
Students that desire to pursue a career in psychological therapy need to be focused individuals and they need to be willing to put in the work that needs to be done. I'm talking to students that are willing to do a lot of reading because in order to pursue this career you have to learn about people and how there feelings and emotions work. Student you don't need to be shy to ask a question because no question is a stupid question. That is the only way your teacher will know how to help you it is pointless to sit there in the classroom and not ask questions it is apart of learning. You also want to make sure that your GPA is not to low it needs to be least a 3.0 or higher maybe a little bit higher in order for you to get into any good colleges
Society and people have always been an interest to me. My entire life has been incorporated around helping those who are not able to help themselves. I take enormous pride in being open minded and free of judgement, when it comes to interacting with individuals. At a young age I was immersed in diversity, with my mother being a physical therapist working with severely disabled children, my father was physician assistant working with the elderly and disabled veterans. This exposure, at a young age opened my world to different cultures, people, and different situations that humbled me to have a level of understanding.
Nearly every person on the planet belongs to some form of a community, but not everyone has the ability to fully embrace and enhance them. Through my leadership, volunteering, and mentorship with my past community, I have learned to engage and promote their activities and principles. At Tulane, I look forward to continuing these efforts and serving with PrEPARE and the Student Clinic Council. In medical school, I desire to build on my previous social and basic science research project as well. I seek to be involved with patient experience research. Dr. Khunkhun in the department of psychiatry is researching how improving doctor-patient encounters in psychiatric setting, would be a great project for me to join. The chance to study medicine at
Heather Church started out wanting to be a psychologist. She loved learning how the brain works and how something as simple as bad weather could upset a person and alter their mentality. Fast forward a couple years and psychology took a back burner to a job in the thrilling music industry. As someone who frequently visited DC simply for concerts in the DMV area, she recounts her time fondly, “ I would literally be bouncing back and forth between Maryland and DC going to concerts and really immersing myself in the culture that was DC rave life.” As luck would have it, the same company that put on the concerts she went to , Club Glow was hiring. She got in contact with one of the owners through a friend and the rest was history. She became one of the few women in a predominantly male run company, and frankly a male dominated industry, taking on operations for one of the most well-known venues in America: Echostage. As she was establishing herself in the company, she also helped create a proposal to make raves safer and become inclusive events. Finally, she was one of the main supporters behind the creation of SoundCheck, Echostage’s smaller but no less mighty sister club.
