Discussion Facilitator
Each student will write a report and lead the class in a discussion on Canvas that covers the selected topic related to mass media (above). Specific examples and details will be provided on Canvas. The points will also be earned through a combination of discussions and responses to Discussion Facilitator reports meant to help you further connect course concepts to your life during the quarter. Students must respond to all peer reports in a timely manner. The report will be included in the Individual Website.
Example 1: A student selects Marshall McLuhan as her media topic. She completes a website informing a mass audience about McLuhan, records a podcast on him and writes a report with discussion questions on his contributions to mass media studies. The podcast and report with questions would be included on the website. Example 2: a student selects the Joe Camel (cigarettes) campaign. He would complete a website on the campaign and include a podcast and report with questions on that topic.
Weekly Assignments (20%)
Students will participate in online discussions and activities each week. Points will be awarded at the end of the quarter based on the overall quality of each student’s contribution to the discussions and completion of activities. Beyond responding to the questions posed, each student should respond to the posts of at least two other students each week.
Our main objective is to explore the mass media's effects on society and see how the media has affected out way of life. Not to mention, compare the life styles of
Mass media has experienced many major developments over the past hundred years. As the manner in which media is communicated to the world evolves a definite shift to American culture has occurred in the process. Mass media has undergone numerous changes in the way it is distributed to the general public, going from newspapers, to radio, to television, and now to the World Wide Web. American culture is so ingrained in technology, that distributing mass media in this format seems like a natural step in the evolutionary process of distribution.
The course provides an introduction to the most prominent forms of media that influence and impact social, business, political, and popular culture in contemporary America. It explores the unique aspects of each medium as well as interactions across various media that combine to create rich environments for information sharing, entertainment, business, and social interaction in the U.S. and around the world.
Participate in class discussion. Remember to participate in the class discussions 4 out of 7 days during the week. (2 points per week, ½ point per qualifying day - 2 substantive posts = qualifying day)

Last Tuesday, I attempted to unplug myself from the world of media and see how it affected my everyday life. After trying to disconnect myself from everything that involves media, I realized how much I rely on it to get me through each day. I was never this aware of its presence in today’s society until disconnecting myself. Without media to rely on, I found myself having to readjust my whole normal routine just to get through the day.
Assignment: As the documentary Miss Representation explains, “The media is now the message and the messenger.” Every day, we take in countless hours of media that influence how we view others and in turn how we view ourselves. It is our responsibility to consume media in an intelligent way AND fight back against negative messages put forth by the media.
In today’s society, media is present in our lives 24/7 allowing it to have a major influence on our culture in both positive and negative ways.
Secondly, how new media has transformed the modern media landscape. Lastly, in what way the media can be controlled by political actors
Today’s society demands that the media plays an active part. With the invention of the smart phone and internet, people have ready access to
Reading Chapter 11: Gendered media reminded me why I majored in communications. The media has such a significant influence on all our lives. I wanted to be a part of that influence and to ultimately help turn the way society portrays people. The media’s influence can get into a person’s subconscious, and unwillingly it will control how we think and what we view as important. I would like to think I am not effected by the media, but I am. I tend to not settle for local news, I always make the effort to stay current on what is going on a global scale through different media outlets. With the rise of fake news I am constantly forced to question these sources and the agenda behind these new stories. It hurts me that in the United States we focus

3. How does the critical/cultural perspective on mass communication view the media? How does it view the audience?
First, you must show up to class. Then you need to ask questions, provide feedback, suggest ideas, help a peer on the computer, etc. Students are expected to actively participate in each class and in Blackboard discussions and assignments. Participation is defined as working actively within the class or your assigned group(s), adding to the discussion of in-class activities, whether role-plays debriefing, case analysis, or learning opportunities in the classroom, and posting responses to and questions for discussion threads assigned in Blackboard. Participation will be included as part of the grade in this course. You will be assessed on your participation in the classroom (beyond simply attended class) and your participation in discussion threads. So, you will have to actively be in class and participating each week to earn your points. Active input from students in regard to their experience and opinions will enrich the class experience. In addition, a student’s interactive involvement in all discussion posts and assigned activities is important for creating a shared learning environment. This includes during class as well as participating in online discussions outside of class.
Mass media is the methods of communication, including television, radio, magazines, films, internet and newspapers, that have become some of society’s most important agents of socialization. In this paper I will talk about media and its effects on society today, things such as stereotypes the media portrays, the way media illustrates women and what that does to body images of women. I will also be talking about medias effects on teenagers, and sexualization in the media.
