Coach Boone’s leadership characteristics were that of dictatorship, a strong and inspirational leader, knowledgeable, cooperative, ambitious, persistent, willing to adapt, flexible and adaptable, well educated, encouraging and self-motivating. Coach Boone is a charismatic leader with a military style approach to coaching. He believes in re-building the players as a team. One of Coach Boone’s great strategies was to room white and black players together so they would get to know one another as people. When his players or coaches made bad decisions, Coach Boone used those opportunities for teaching and encouragement that led to success. Coach Boone anticipated conflict and was prepared when it happened.
Coach Yoast leadership characteristics were that of proactive, flexible, supportive, confident, compassionate, a good communicator, quiet confidence and open-minded. His approach draws on the relationships he has with his players and the community. He believed that emphasizing his player’s needs and personal interests would result in success. Coach Yost was a thoroughly honest and moral person. He was passionate about winning and committed to help the players realize their full potential on and off the field.

In the beginning of the movie, Coach Boone had to build ethos for himself because of racial differences. Coach Boone, being of African American descent, was hired over their current caucasian coach and this caused the white football players to boycott the team until Coach Yoast became their assistant coach. Coach Boone lead his team by example and his dedication to his craft. He showed the players that he did not care about what color you wore on your skin, but of the sport that brought them together. During his speech he states “I don’t care if you like each other or not. But you will respect each other. And maybe, I don’t know, maybe we’ll learn to play this game like men” (Boone). He uses the built trust aspect of ethos very well to close this speech.
Yoast was dedicated to football and had gained loyalty from his team and white community. He was respected and had demonstrated his effective leadership through several wins. He was also nominated for hall of fame for his exceptional leadership. He cared for the people in his team. When he had the opportunity to leave and take up a position for head coach he did not because he was worried about the players in his team. He considered them like his own kids and was concerned for them and did not want to abandon them. He takes the offer of the assistant coach to ensure that his team members are a part of the new team. His initial objective was to ensure that his boys are a part of the team and are well taken care off.
As with most sports teams, the Titans have an autocratic leadership style. Coach Boone is the one and only person who makes the decisions, he is the main man in charge. The style is productive, and the team wins games. Although he has assistant coaches, such as Bill Yoast who is the defensive coordinator, all the decisions must go through Coach Boone first. The democratic leadership style is not applicable on a football team because that’s why teams have coaches. The team does not make group decisions. As the movie progressed and Coach Boone’s vision came together, Coach Yoast slowly but surely began to show more support. Coach Boone’s consistent preaching, that he did not view the team as black and white players, but instead, simply as football players who must form cohesion and take actions not for self, but for team, eventually rubbed off on Coach Yoast. This is where the culture in the coaching staff began to form. Trust also began to build and the three coaches, now more cohesive themselves were able to accomplish much more in order to coach their players much more constructively. By the time the Titans had made it to the championship, all three coaches had put their differences aside, bought in to the vision and culture, and were able to coach their players to victory.
One of the factors that successfully reduced the majority of prejudice within the team was superordinate goals. The goals set by Boone were made purposely unachievable by a single member. The only way for these goals to be achieved is the cooperation of the entire team. As he told the team, their game must be “a team effort in order to achieve perfection”
Coach Boone had an excellent follower or Co-leader. Coach Hines’ co-leadership abilities seemed to be the conscious for Coach Boone. He steps in and positively influenced Coach Boone decision. Also, Coach Yoast is excellent as a co-leader. The success of an organization or team is incumbent upon the abilities of everyone and all successful leaders have highly effective co-leaders.
In the movie Remember the Titans, coaches Yoast and Boone demonstrate leadership through the three leadership styles; authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire.
Coach Boone in Remember the Titans demonstrates the leader-follower relationship which states that the leader can influence their subordinates through his relationships with the latter (Niemeyer, 2016). To gain the support of their subordinates, leaders develop them through mentoring, delegating, and promoting collaboration (Niemeyer, 2016). In turn, the leadership impacts the subordinates’ engagement, initiative and performance (Niemeyer, 2016). Coach Boone led his team by asserting that they were a team who would dominate the season through perfection. As a result, the practices were all hard.
Basketball teams need a coach that believes in them. The team needs a coach that will work hard to help them achieve the goal of winning. They need a coach that communicates and shows interest in each of the players. On the other hand, they need a coach that can be directive, but also supportive. In the case study this week, Shirley was quite the opposite. Conflicting enough, by all appearances she did not have a total grasp of the concept of leadership in coaching basketball. Coach Knight focused on the importance of preparation to win and provided players with the tools necessary to do so through rules, discipline and leading by example. Coach Knight instilled the will to win through a drill that required players to fight for the ball. This simple drill emphasized the will to win through preparation rather than the skill itself. Players gained the drive and confidence to do well and want to do well. Coach Knight used discipline to reinforce his motivational tools by being fair to all and never playing favorites. He disciplined players for performing poorly by threatening to take away scholarships, benching starters or throwing players out of practice if the behavior persisted. He reinforced his leadership style through example by not settling for less than perfect. Coach Knight expected perfection and was never satisfied with just winning but with the mistakes that were made. His idea of a perfect win was a win with no mistakes and he never tolerated less than that. He felt if he did tolerate mistakes then so would his players. His belief and motivation gave players a will to do better and in relation to the LMX theory this kind of leadership with subordinates is what makes an effective leader.
This offer was very tempting, and I think that this was the moment when Coach Yoast experienced the biggest moral dilemma, whether he should help Boone or not. In the beginning of the movie Yoast was not enthusiastic about the fact that he needs to step down, and give his position to a new black Coach. Despite the skin color, Coach Yoast realized that together with Boone they share one common goal. This goal is to win. Coach Yoast ethical dilemma was decision during the game, whether to be a good leader, help the team and Boone, or to stay quiet and see what happens. Regardless of the white and black difference, Yoast was the Coach , a man of his word, not just a random football fan. He faced referees during the game, and that was a crucial moment where two colors started to vanish.
