There are a lot of different kinds of leadership styles in the world. There a are lot of these are represented in the movie called “Remember the Titans”. However I will only be addressing two types. The first one was shown by coach Boone. The second was in coach Yoast. I will talk about their differences and similarities.
Coach Boone was a strong leader because he had three qualities. The first one was that he was very determined. He showed this in a scene from the movie “Remember the Titans” when he had everyone at camp and pushed them onto the edge. He is also intimidating and that helped when he needed the players respect and to have them work. Coach Boone's leadership style was a dictatorship, this was good and bad. They did what he
Coach Boone’s contribution to the team’s accomplishments was the most instrumental. It was his idea to
Coach Gary Gaines, Permian high football coach, showed a key role in leadership. Once Boobie Miles was injured, he knew in his head that he had lost one of his best players just looking at him in pain from the sidelines. Once the team got in the locker rooms he checked on Miles and the doctor said his knee was not in shape to continue playing; Gaines took it upon himself to, instead of telling his team that Miles was in critical condition, told them that he was going to be alright and instead of worrying just keep playing the best they have been and that they can get through it as a team. Whether the team knew he was lying or not, he was still positive about losing a player and continued to coach as he did (page number here). In addition, Coach
In conclusion, Although Coach K was originally mentored by Coach Knight as both a player and as an assistant coach; they both have adopted different styles of leadership. They appear to be almost polar opposites, yet have both managed to have done well in their respective field. As the late Emanuel Rohn once said, “The challenge of leadership is to be strong but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly”. If only Coach Knight had followed this simple statement, how much further would he have gone?
Tony Dungy had a transformational leadership style with his players bring a treat people the way you want to be treated philosophy to coaching. Dungy stresses that coaches are essentially teachers who put faith and family ahead of football and do not belittle their players or scream at them. Jimmy Johnson had a more transactional leadership style, you were their to help him and his team or he was going to trade you for someone better. Johnson had an ability to find talent in the draft, make savvy trades, and sign quality players as free
Factors that can influence an individual’s choice of leadership in any given situation are many and varied. An individual is likely to have a primary leadership style which they are most comfortable with using. Often the primary leadership style is that which most suits their innate personality traits. For example,

Coach Bill Yoast doesn’t resemble coach Herman Boone, he believed that his players’ needs and personal interests should be supported and would result in success. Therefore, I don't think he follows just one leadership style. The idea that successful leaders adjust their styles based on the development of followers, or players in this case, as indicated by their performance in a given situation. In addition, his leadership style has noticeable notes of servant leadership in it as well. Servant leadership revolves around the idea of helping individuals use their talents to full potential.
He is a dedicated and passionate leader. Under his leadership, his UCLA team had won ten NCAA championships. Some of the qualities that Wooden possessed which made him become an effective leader were always making sure his player’s emotions were on an even keel, pretending that he didn’t care about winning, and making sure his players were always in top condition. John Wooden was always a very harsh and strict coach, making
As with most sports teams, the Titans have an autocratic leadership style. Coach Boone is the one and only person who makes the decisions, he is the main man in charge. The style is productive, and the team wins games. Although he has assistant coaches, such as Bill Yoast who is the defensive coordinator, all the decisions must go through Coach Boone first. The democratic leadership style is not applicable on a football team because that’s why teams have coaches. The team does not make group decisions. Coach Boone also uses Job Enlargement in ‘Remember the
Coach Boone had an excellent follower or Co-leader. Coach Hines’ co-leadership abilities seemed to be the conscious for Coach Boone. He steps in and positively influenced Coach Boone decision. Also, Coach Yoast is excellent as a co-leader. The success of an organization or team is incumbent upon the abilities of everyone and all successful leaders have highly effective co-leaders.
In the movie Remember the Titans, coaches Yoast and Boone demonstrate leadership through the three leadership styles; authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire.
For example, A.O. Scott, a noted film critic summarized the relationship between Assistant Coach Yoast and Boone in the following manner, “ The two men gradually mutate from hostile suspicion to grudging respect to loyalty and trust, an evolution mirrored by the players. The first, and strongest, part of the movie takes place at a preseason camp, where, under Boone's relentless drill-sergeant discipline states, ''This is not a democracy,'' he bellows. '' This is a dictatorship. I am the law.'' , they meld into a cohesive fighting unit” (Scott).
Leadership is shown in many ways in the movie and leadership is represented through main characters. Coach Boone first of all represents the entire black community overcoming the oppression that they have experienced through all of the years. He exhibits the determination that is inside all of the players to win the state championship
In terms of leadership styles a wide variety exists for one to employ (Boykins, 2013). There isn’t firm consensus as to which styles prove to be the most effective. Different situations call for different approaches. In the article, Empirical Study of Leadership Styles, it discusses several leadership styles that I can relate to.
As a leader you must be real with yourself and others for fake will not fix or implement change. In his position Herman Boone was real in a sense that he was genuinely honest and upfront in every encounter with others, he does not sugar coat things or beat around the bush, and instead of telling you what you want to hear, he tells you what you need to know. At times though it seems that Boone’s raw emotions such as his attitude, assertiveness and arrogance are a bit too real, we are able to see that they are key components in how he establishes his sense of urgency throughout the organization. At the start of the movie, the sense of urgency created by Boone’s attitude almost lead the team in the wrong direction, as the players did not respect or understand the way he went about doing things. For example, before the players leave for camp Boone is approached by Bertier about positions on the team, in the midst of the conversation Boone says “You take a look at her. Cause once you step on that bus you aint got your mama no more. You got your brothers on the team and you got your daddy. You know who your daddy is, doncha? Gary, if you want to play on this football team, you answer me when I ask you who is your daddy?” Statements such as these do not usually sit well with others, many including myself would find this very disrespectful. On the other hand Coach Boone’s ability to be real with himself as well as others allows him to express raw emotion and concern that explains his reasoning behind his actions, As shown in the scene after the first game when Yoates challenges Coach Boone’s public criticism in regards to Petey, he replies “you think you’re doing these boys a favor, by taking them aside every time I come down on them…I may be a mean cuss but I’m the same mean cuss with everyone on that football field the world does not give a damn how sensitive these kids are…you are crippling them” the tough love shown by Coach Boone towards his players expresses a real
