Principals are under increased pressure to create systemic change within their school. Providing leadership coaching will give principals the tools they need while on the job and can improve their interactions throughout their workday. The purpose of coaching is to move from one place to another (Reiss, 2007, p. 54). The coaching model in the executive world has various models which supports the concept of helping leaders reach their next level with improved thinking skills or clarifying purposeful action to achieve challenging goals. Coaching develops leaders or gives leaders an additional edge (Allison-Napolitano, 2013). For the purposes of this paper I will use the term leadership coaching when discussing educational settings and executive coaching for the business sector. Leadership coaching was defined by Next Level Leadership (2016) as an individualized process that builds a leader 's capability to achieve short- and long-term organizational goals. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work directly with external coaches to develop my leadership skills. When I transitioned from the role of building principal to a district level director I was provided with six months of executive coaching. The coaching was essential in improving my daily interactions with co-workers and providing a pathway of success serving in my new role. Having the personal experience with coaching drives what I know to be true, leadership coaching provides positive experiences to enhance the daily work of leaders. Coaching develops leaders so they have clarity and well-ordered priorities. It can give leaders confidence in their position because they have been helped to think matters through thoroughly. Through our work as we review successful coaching models for school leaders it is essential to review the work of interactionism and how interactions between individual people, primarily principals, their coaches and their daily work to determine the success of various coaching models.
