Coaching Opportunity
Athletics and sports have influence my life in many ways. I still refer back to lessons learned from coaches and reminisce over the memories of the happiest times of my life. The impact organized sports had on my life has motivated me to create better experiences for those pursuing an athletic lifestyle. This course, ESS-3200, assisted me in expanding my knowledge and the execution of efficient coaching. Being raised in Layton, UT, I went to my local armory in search for an opportunity to coach. It was not difficult to find experience after running into advisors I admired for so many years.
My personal objective was to receive a different perspective to what it was like to be a coach, in contrast to being coached as a young athlete. I realized many things about what it takes to be successful and at times I found myself a little frustrated, and others I was sincerely enjoying the experience. Overall, I learned throughout the course various techniques, strategic coaching plans, and coach/athlete relationship guidelines on how to become a successful coach. As I endured basketball practice with 12-13 year olds, I kept in mind the many traits that are necessary to greater the athlete’s experience.
I found that patience is a key factor when coaching young athletes. I noticed some athletes were extremely interested in practice, and others not so much. I remember this time period as the developmental stage of what I became most interested in. Kids
Sports management is a really broad field, therefore I decided to focus on my minor and one of my major interests of this field: coaching. In this paper I will be explaining my personal five building blocks that make up a well-rounded coaching philosophy and coach. Those blocks are; leadership, organization, attitude, respect, and resiliency. Each of these five aspects are equally important and balance each other out. Leadership, the action of leading a group of athletes towards a goal. Organization, being able to organize a team and have a plan in order to help the team achieve goals. Attitude, it is very important for a coach to have a winning and positive attitude that is contagious to the players. Respect, there has to be a good
I was born into a competitive family and I fell in love with the desire to compete. Everyone who I have been coached by in my athletic career has taught me the importance of winning and how much more enjoyable it is when you are part of a successful team. I processed all my information and I still had been unable to put it all together. I emailed Mr. Spear and I asked him for some advice over the summer as the school year rapidly approached. He got back to me rather quickly and told me various ideas, but one of them caught my eye and it was something that was right there the whole time: Coaching. Since I was young, I have been very blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from so many coaches, I knew it would be a superb opportunity to get myself involved in coaching. It was important for me to find a valuable way to enter into coaching and that’s when I learned the clear way to get involved in coaching is by entering into youth sports. But, I still felt that the coaching part itself was not enough to get me through the year, so I decided to implicate another part of my project. I wanted to learn league
With the right influence, communication and skill development is the key to a valuable coach. Without my two outstanding high school coaches, I wouldn’t have the love for basketball and track the way I do today. They have taught me everything I needed to know for the present, along with tips for the future. Coach Lewis and Coach Kohler have done more for me than what I’ve ever deserved and I will never be able to pay them back for all their help and encouragement. But I hope they have understanding of how much of a change they can make on someone's life, someone's life like my
Within this Sport and Fitness Internship, it was my agreement to coach a minimum of 40 hours at Darrough Chapel Park through a partnership with the Kokomo YMCA’s Soccer Program. This permitted me the chance to put all my knowledge and skills to the test, whether it was being recalled from my soccer experience growing up or getting the first hand feel of how to apply what I have learned from my courses at IU Kokomo University in the past semesters. Regardless of which method gave me better insight on coaching, this internship has become a stepping stone in showcasing my efforts don’t go unnoticed and that I am going to do great things
This book is extremely resourceful and provides great insight of the history of coaching as a profession. This book simplifies the principles and practices of becoming a successful Christian coach. The author emphasizes on an eternal purpose and how Christian coaches integrate a biblical worldview and how important it is to
Parents often have concerns for how coaches treat their young athletes, but most coaches are the best character role models that a child will have. As David Brooks, author of the article “Organized Sports Can Benefit Children”, says “Coaches have become the leading moral instructors in America today.” (Brooks). Groups like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely to keep coaches doing their job of creating mature and respectful athletes (Positive). Children need these positive role models in their lives. Even if a child has great role models as parents, it is even better to have one outside of the family. A coach can serve as someone that kids should admire, love, and respect even though they are outside of their family; this will prepare children for their future of dealing with
Within Sports Coaching Literature, it has been established that reflection is a generic term for intellectual and effective activities, in which individuals examine their experiences, in order to develop new understanding and intrapersonal appreciation (Knowles, et al., 2006). Research in this field has advocated reflective practice as an approach to professional development which positively impacts coaching effectiveness (Cropley, et al., 2012). This reflective report shall discuss, analyse and evaluate my own personal development throughout my first semester spent studying at UCFB, in order to develop new understanding and intrapersonal appreciation, and help explore my decisions and experiences, increasing understanding of
The article also highlights the responsibility of sharing successes and failures between coaches and athletes. Comparing this week’s work assignment to this article, I notice a linkage of several items. The comparable list consists of emphasis on providing support, team management, leadership style, development levels, and advantages of engaging others.
Setting a solid coaching philosophy is very important when you are coaching youth basketball, because it will serve as a sound foundation for your team's and your coaching's efforts. A coaching philosophy must sum up your standards, values and expectations, the basis of all your practice sessions. Setting objectives and strategies is essential, so all efforts go towards the same direction. When figuring out your coaching philosophy, first of all take into consideration the age group you are coaching. You cannot set the same standards and expectations for children under age six and players over 12 years old.
My main objective of being a coach is for the player development. I want to help take these players under my wing with my own knowledge, and to develop them into fundamentally strong players. My second objective is to win. This may not happen right away, but if you can develop a strong fundamental base into these kids, than I believe
The first concern with being a coach is where to start with training the players. The coach is to measure skill levels of the individuals, their mentality of the sport, and also, how they interact with each other is key to being a coach. Secondly, the most important role of a coach is to be the role model for his/her players and to be able to have patients and be forthright more often then not. A great place to start coaching is by understanding the dynamics of the team. This is the process of figuring out how team members relate to one another (Understand Team Dynamics). Forming positive relationships with the players and also, the parents to acquire trust and assure the players a comfortable environment would help with understanding dynamics. Gaining positive attitudes from everyone involved will show a growth in skill relationship between the teammates, also the positive attitude will make practices, games, and constructive criticism easier to come by. Having patients with the less skilled is something that every coach needs to have. Individual athletes look to coaches for leadership and encouragement beyond the sports environment, and this also carries over to athletic performance. According to Athletic Insight, the relationship between a coach and a student-athlete determines overall motivation and stress levels (Leadership and Individual Performance). From personal experience, when I had gotten along with a coach, and they were easy to talk to, the practices were more fun to go to, the games were easier and all the players played as one unit. Getting constructive criticism was easy to take and I became very coachable. The coach has more responsibilities than just holding a practice, game, having a plan to the game or practice, but also bringing a friendly and easy environment to be involved in. Coaches can push the psychological, emotional, and physical limits of their players to the point of harm, create
The coach tirelessly pursues personal education, formally and informally, both in the performance related sciences and in liberal arts. He sees the journey to coaching excellence as a never ending story; seen not only in terms of a chosen sport and coaching theory and practice, but in understanding how to successfully live a balanced and full life, while facing tougher and tougher challenges in the chosen field of endeavour.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How
Things I did that I believe made a difference in my coaching situation was learning to be patient, genuinely caring and listening to the kids, instructing them with encouragement, teaching them lessons other than just basketball fundamentals, and having fun throughout really helped me as a coach and a
This comes at it more as a motivational and communication side of things which makes it able to connect to the audience in a different light. It also is helpful because it talks a lot about how each athlete is different and the different motivation that needs to be used for each of them which has not been discussed in the other sources. I will use this source as backing for a point about how every athlete is different and show the motivation that can be used for the different people. As well as I can talk about the six strategies that are used to communicate with the players and be able to get the most out of each and every one of them. This source will serve as one of the main points that will be discussed because motivation is a key to helping players development, to winning, to being the best you can be as a coach. Communication is key in sports and how to direct attention and communicate to the players about what you want them to do as well as what you expect them to be able to accomplish is something that I am able to
