History of the Great American Soft Drink: There’s no doubt that Coca-Cola Company loves its history. Immediately walking into the Coca-Cola museum located in Atlanta, GA visitors are greeted by an upbeat welcome ambassador that provides visitors a 10 minute history lesson of their product. A well-respected Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton believed in the health benefits of the coca leaf and kola nut, and introduced the southeast to a concoction that he named French Wine Coca . However, prohibition threatened the wine-based concoction and Pemberton feverishly experimented with his base formula to comply with the prohibition laws. Pemberton would often provide samples to a local pharmacy in Atlanta for “trial runs.” The “trial runs,” were necessary for Pemberton to gain approval from the general population to assure sales of his modified formula and in 1886 he gained their approval. Pemberton’s business partner, Frank Robinson, named and branded the product. However, Coca-Cola was not advertised or sold as a soft drink. Originally it was advertised and sold as a cure all drink.
