Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, known to most as Coco Chanel, “Arguably the most influential fashion designer of all time, Coco Chanel revolutionised the way women wore clothes and paved a new way for the fashion brand, capitalising on the changing times she was living in and her status as a fashion icon”(Dunne). Her clothing designs, from the use of jersey to the Chanel suit demonstrate her rebellious to the common norm. “Chanel [Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel] was born into poverty in the French countryside; her mother died, and her father abandoned her to an orphanage” (Coco Chanel). Chanel life started as a tragic beginning she was abandoned and left with only nuns to take care of her. Her mother had died and her only motherly figures had been them. Though the orphanage she made an acquittance, a young wealthy textile man. After her time in the orphanage, Chanel tried her hand at singing, she sang at a cafe where many people speculate she got her nickname “Coco”. She left once her a man by the name of Arthur (“Boy”) Capel offered to finance her first little shop, where she first started to sell hats and simple jersey dresses. She would go on to have a relationship with him until his death. Coco Chanel would also have a handful of relationship with wealthy men who would finance her endeavors, to the Duke of Westminster and the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII to her most scandalous of all Baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage general of the Nazi army.
