Code of Ethics Overview
According to Johnson (2015), the code of ethics is described as an organization’s ethical stance both to members and to the outside world. Individuals new to an organization look to the codes for guidance, instruction, and the organization’s ethical standards and values. Also, code of ethics serves as a formal ethics statement improving the organization’s image protecting it from lawsuits and further regulation.
Code of ethics policies are designed for organizations to follow in everything they do. Employees are bound by the rules and regulations of these policies sometimes relieving organizations from unlawful lawsuits.
The general overview of organizational policies includes a value statement, written statements of ethics policies, comprehensive and specific in terms of expectations. Von der Embse, Desai, and Ofori-Brobbey, (2010).
Rationale for Design of Code of Ethics
Von der Embse, Desai, & Ofori-Brobbey (2010) elaborated on the rationale for code of ethics claiming that ethical safeguards were defined as deliberate measures and programs used by an organization to prevent unethical behavior and to promote ethical practices, mechanisms, structures, or pronouncements intended to encourage, guide, and regulate ethical behavior. While they vary in number, type, and comprehensiveness, the ethics code is the most widely-used safeguard and main point of reference for others.
