Coercion is demonstrated through physical force used with the intent to harm humans. This is a form of power because a person is willing to harm others in order to get people to do what is asked. Spain allowed Equatorial Guinea to become independent and organized its first election. A very insecure Macias Nguema won the elections. People spoke out about their opposition against his leadership. Macias jailed them and two were noted, “both were murdered: one first had his legs broken and was then starved” (20). Also, after “political reshuffles; ten of the dozen cabinet members in his first government were butchered” (20). Macias would kill people that he felt could take him out of power. Killing people would show that that he should not be messed with and he had the ability to take a person’s life without facing personal consequences. Since he felt like this, Macias killed thousands of people and caused many people to flee the country. The announcement of a consequence if something does or does not happen is called a threat. A threat is a useful form of power because it uses the anticipation of something bad happening to a person if they don’t do what is told of them. Throughout the planning of the wonga coup plot mann and his co-conspirators felt that most african governments approved of what they were doing. It was gathered by Mann’s co-conspirator that “the south african authorities had okayed the whole mission… that Thabo Mbeki was looking forward to meeting the new
Power is a strong, dynamic category, which means the ability to do some things. This category has a huge influence on the relations in society. The power usually leads to the use of the violence. Moreover, powerful people with the use of the violence are trying to protect their control
When a law enforcement officer uses force on a subject it will be classified into one of three main categories which are, justifiable, excessive, and deadly force. The authority for law enforcement officers to use force comes from the United States Constitution (case law), state statutes, and department policy. Law enforcement use of force is very important because it involves the patrolman on the street, the corrections officer in jails and prisons, and the courts where excessive use of force cases are held.
Power in politics is a person who has the ability to influence a person in terms of their behaviour; however they possess no right to - unlike authority. There are many ways in which a person can influence another’s behaviour; one such example is through coercion. Coercion refers to the use of violence or threats in order to influence someone. [Jones and Norton, 2011]
The purpose of the paper is to show how the criminal justice system is trying to reduce officer and offender assaults in Texas Corrections facilities. In the Texas Corrections facilities, also known as Texas Department of Criminal Justice, defines the “Use of Force” as a physically controlling measure taken during a confrontational situation to make an offender do something involuntary. This may include physical contact by an officer with an offender in order to control movements, a situation when an offender physically resists the application of restraints, chemical agents are discharged, batons or other instruments make contact with an offender in an effort to restore or preserve order, and even when offensive or
David Figueroa Eng. 101A Professor Stern 4/20/15 Final draft In conclusion, in discussions of torture, one controversial issue has been on the use of it. On one hand, the people against torture argue that it is cruel and unusual punishment. On the other hand, those for torture argue that it should be used for the greater good. Others even maintain that under extreme circumstances, it may be admissible if it can save American lives. My own view is that no one should be subjected to cruel punishment because it is not only illegal, unreliable, ineffective, time consuming, it also has too many flaws that could potentially ruin innocent lives. The definition of torture is any act, whether physical or emotional, or maybe both, is intentionally subjected to a specific individual or a group for many reasons. Most of these reasons that torture is administered is for extracting information from an individual or just for punishing him/her for a crime that he/she has committed or is suspected of committing. The use of torture can be used to intimidate a person to give information that may be beneficial for a nation. The use of torture has been used for many centuries. The purposes of using torture have changed over the years as well as the methods in which a person is tortured. One crucial piece that has been established that separates us human beings from barbarians is the prohibition of using torture. There are many reasons why torture has been deemed a crime now in society. There are
The point of view in the story “The Use of Force” is in first person narrative. This conveys inner the inner thoughts of the narrator as the doctor. The doctor is a reliable narrator and an observer. I feel that his personality is brought out in the doctor. So the doctors thoughts and behaviors are a reflection of the authors.
Power, could there be too much of it? Or not enough? In the wrong hands, too much power lead to millions of innocent lives being taken away. One of the world’s most famous dictators takes power and has control on whether you live or die. He may not like the color of your hair, skin or what you believe in and for that, the price you pay is your life.
The ending of the story shows that the little girl had been dealing with her own sort of internal conflict. She had a
The Coercive Acts was formed by the British Parliament to punish the Americans in Boston, Massachusetts, for the destroying the tea of the East India Company. The British needed money so they taxed the Americans to help them get money for the French and Indian War. This outraged the colonist because they didn’t like being taxed without being represented. The colonist wore Native Americans attire and dumped the bags of tea into the Boston Harbor. The British viewed the retaliation of the Americans as disrespectful. The British Parliament passed several laws that angered Americans, and they believed those rights are unbearable to follow. The Coercive Acts leads to the American Revolution, and the Americans believe that British Parliament disregarded their rights as people with natural rights.
Police brutality is the use of excessive and unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. Police brutality can be present in many ways. The most common form of police brutality is a physical form. Police officers can use nerve gas, batons, pepper spray, and guns in order to physically intimidate or even intentionally hurt civilians. Police brutality can also take the form of false arrests, verbal abuse, psychological intimidation, sexual abuse, police corruption, racial profiling, political repression and the improper use of Tasers. Black people are mostly affected by white cops. Cops are given a lot of scope in performing their obligations. Since they are relied upon to ensure general society and stand up to possibly rough people, they can lawfully utilize physical, and even fatal, power in specific situations. Be that as it may, an officer who uses power when it is not called for, or who utilizes more constraints than is important to perform his or her occupation, may go too far into police ruthlessness. Police brutality should be controlled and stopped because its getting out of hand and is killing our African American youth.
Police brutality is an intentional act of undue force that a law enforcement officer uses to control a situation. This act violates the human rights of civilians and thus is unlawful behavior that exceeds the officer’s governmental power.
Most people in the United States understand that there are occurrences of police brutality, although the episodes of such brutality is minute in comparison to what is perceived to be the case by the general population. Police brutality is a perception of excessive force, though depending on the situation, that very force may in fact be the use of proper force. When it comes to Americans receiving their knowledge of current event, they usually refer to the media, in which a major topic today is police brutality.
As we transition from in sport to into society, the perfect example involves Chad Johnson. In 2013, Johnson appeared in court for “alleged probation violations and the judge was ordering him to be arrested and jailed with a bond set for $1,000”. While the plea deal was being determined, the judge told Chad to thank his lawyer for the work he done, he decided to slap his butt show his gratitude. The courtroom broke into laughter, and the judge took the act as Johnson thinking this situation was all a joke. This resulted in the plea deal being tossed and him being sentenced to a month in lock down. In addition to the month-long sentence, his probation was extended to late December with twenty-five hours of community service and extra therapy
Coercive power: being able to punish others for not doing what needs to be done
| When leader use his power to punish or penalise his subordinate to control their behaviour it is known as coercive power. Such power is based on the extent to which a leader can punish in order to control his subordinate. This power varies from one leader to another (Wood et al, 2010).
