According to author Kendra Cherry, “professional counseling is an application of mental health, psychological or development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systemic intervention strategies, that address wellness, personal growth, or career development” (Cherry - Paraphrase). Many counselors specialize in specific forms of therapy. Generally, counselors who focus on specific types of counseling methods usually require advanced knowledge in the specific field. Counseling can be described as guidance of an individual by utilizing psychological methods especially in collecting case history information, using various techniques of the personal interview and testing interests as well as aptitudes. Cognitive behavior therapy has become quite popular in use due to the short duration of time that counselors see a positive affect in their patients. This type of therapy doesn’t require as much time; therefore it is more affordable than some of the other types of therapeutics options. “Cognitive behavioral therapy is affective with a wide variety of maladaptive behaviors. There are several forms of cognitive behavioral therapy such as: rational emotive therapy, cognitive therapy, and multimodal therapy” (Dobson and Dozois - Paraphrase). There are multiple components of cognitive behavioral therapy. People develop faulty beliefs throughout trials in life. Thoughts and feelings can become a dysfunctional part of a person’s character. Faulty belief systems can affect a person’s life in a multitude of ways. Faulty belief systems can develop into problematic behaviors that negatively affect a person’s relationships with family, friends as well a person’s work relationships. One example, if a person thinks they are unattractive, that person may develop a low self esteem. A person with a low self esteem can make choices regarding relationships that may be detrimental to the person. There are several steps involved in the process of cognitive behavioral therapy.
