Caitlyn Hatch is a twenty year old student from Amherst, Massachusetts, who spends her weekends roaming abandoned buildings all over the western part of the state. What she does in these buildings is take photographs, however, she has not always been interested in the medium. Photography had never been her first choice for what she would possibly study at university, and she never imagined it as being something she would want to pursue professionally. Originally, she was intent on being a graphic designer. She had begun to play around with an online photoshop app, editing pictures taken by other people and was sure graphic design was for her, that is, until she got her first camera. She got her first camera at age fourteen for Christmas, one of the big black Nikon digital cameras. While she had never seriously considered photography before, she began to play around with her new camera. The novelty of it all coupled with the support of her father, who himself was an amateur nature photographer throughout his twenties, started the fire in her to take up this art and learn as much about it as she could.

Kist passion for art has informed him in his teaching and research. Before teaching, he was involved in art. He was formerly a musician, a filmmaker, an actor, and he even worked in video production. He was also a former classroom teacher. He brought his passion for arts into the classroom to help motivate his students by using videos, allowing the kids to make movies, listening to music, and viewing art. Kist didn’t know his passion for art would contribute toward his work now as a professor and researcher.

Since the beginning of time, artists have labored extensively to find innovative ways to convey sentiment, passion, and feeling. Telling stories and trying to unlock the minds of people through different avenues of artistic labors. Art touches and affects people in unique ways; it can have special or unusual meaning on the person depending on how one views it. Artists’ rendering of their art is interpreted in numerous ways by others who view it unless it is explained by the artist on its meaning giving a clear example of what they are portraying. Michael C. James Sr. is the Retention of Success Coordinator, School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State. Mr. James was born in Chicago, IL in 1960 however, was raised by his mother in Rochester, New York.

Throughout my early teen years, I was exposed to different mediums of art and discovered that I could express myself through more channels than just paper. Although Barry found comfort in her 11 x 17 newsprint and some paint, I was able to focus my energy on making music and taking photographs. Without my art teachers, I wouldn’t have the expressive outlet I do today. My childhood was not filled with unhappiness as Lynda Barry’s was, but from both backgrounds, we found a warmth from the exposure of art that the educational system gave to us.

The documentary What Remains follows photographer Sally Mann’s life over a span of five years as she balances being a mother, wife and photographer. In the film viewers are able to get an intimate glimpse of Mann’s creative process as she captures various images of her loved ones, landscapes, and even a new series that explores death. In this paper I will discuss Mann’s work detailing the criticism it receives as well as how my experience as a novice photographer parallels hers.

There is one prominent artist that was known to be inspiration of Cole’s work named Asher B. Durand. Asher B. Durand was an artist born in Maplewood, New Jersey and shared the same style of art the Thomas did, Asher was a matter of fact the one to discover Thomas after Thomas’s catskill painting collection, their aspirations to do big things and connected style of art led both Asher and Thomas to become best friends through the durations of both of their lives. The second inspiration of Thomas’s work was the landscapes that he saw when traveling throughout Europe and the United States, many of his most famous painting present a beautiful landscape but with a story, it was as if he took the landscape and made it a fantasy world. Between the years 1829-1831 Cole returned to the United Kingdom to study, spend time with his family and be closer to Italy and France, these years treated Cole very well as he built his reputation and stature in this duration. In the winter of 1835-1836 Cole proceeded on his work of Catskills working on the collection of paintings called “The Course of Empire,” but his views were more impactful with his concerns regarding the impact of industrialization and its impact on the beautiful landscapes that inspired his work. Thereafter in 1836 Cole met a woman in New York by the name of Maria Bartow and on the date November 22, 1836 Cole married her in the house where he resided in Cedar Grove, 2 years pass and on the date January 1, 1838 Cole and his wife Maria had then given birth to their first child named Theodore Alexander Cole. However, our trip did not last countless hours as I looked over 30 paintings in about twenty five minutes. This was not due to my lack of interest, but more to my novice mindset towards art. Art is similar to most skill activities in that people that are active in said activity can better understand and articulate the small actions that lead to a great piece of art, a great football play, or a great movie. I am embarrassed to say that I did not pay close enough attention to the intricacies of my dad's art, but I accepted to write these articles in hopes I could learn more about my dad's favorite past time.

Art is often described as a living work. To senior Emily Bodine, living people are what make her art work possible. Bodine has been interested in portrait painting for her entire life, but it has taken her years to perfect her talent. At the Spartan Fiesta she is planning to show all of the work from her high school career and work towards getting a scholarship for an art program in college.

As an individual who’s been drawing and painting since before she could even hold a pen – apparently, I used to spill my grandma’s tea and make shapes with it – art has always been my favorite pastime. It’s tranquil and relaxing, and mixing paints is the most satisfying experience. Thus, it’s no wonder that the activity that I’m most invested in is art.

I grew up alongside the wild Rocky Mountain Columbines, where the air is crisp and the winters are long. I spent my time engaging in the arts such as acting, writing, and creating. From a young age I was drawn to the world of imagination and found happiness through producing art. We all face and over come challenges within our lives and whenever I am faced with hardship I find comfort in visually expressing myself.

Art is an object or piece of work that brings one pleasure. Art is also something you see or feel and you cannot even begin to describe the ways you like it or how it makes you feel. Art is something that portrays beauty and happiness. Art lets you see the world through another person’s perspective. Most art seems to tell a story about where a person has been and the things they have encountered along the way. It lets you connect with the artist and see things through their eyes. Art is a way of expressing one’s self without words. When I think of art, I think of paintings, portraits, sketches, and sculptures.
