Try This 2.3 I am using the same blog I did in the previous assignment. It is about Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the 49ers, not standing during the national anthem. He refused to stand. During the interview that night this is the statement he made. Passage I chose: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder. ... This is not something that I am going to run by anybody. I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. ... If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right,” said Colin Kaepernick during his interview. This puzzled me. I was angry, just like a lot of other americans, that Kaepernick would disrespect our country like that. Even though there are problems in our country today, this isn't how you address it. Racism has been in our country since the founding fathers have stepped foot on american soil. Its a sad the way white american have treated black, or other color people, in the past and present. It something that has died down in the last …show more content…
Not all police officers are murders. Some made some lousy decisions, and they should be persecuted for them, but they aren't all bad. They have the hardest job in this country, hands down. They protect the citizens form hurting, or harming other citizens. Days later after Colin addressed the media, he wore socks that had pigs as cops. In my opinion the people police officers deal with are the pigs. The murders, sex offenders, and thefts, are the pigs. Police officers enforce the law, because some has to. If you don't do anything wrong, you should have know problem with them. In a perfect world and society, cops aren't
On September 21st, Christine Brennan reported Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand while the national anthem was being played in National Public Radio’s (NPR) online portal (www.npr.org). All through the National Football League 's preseason matches, Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, refused to stand for the national anthem. He clarified that he took this stance to point out what he sees as wrongdoings against African-Americans and different minorities, especially with regards to certain atrocities in police activities. Kaepernick has stated he is showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement, which was sparked by a number of police killing innocent black people. When addressed by journalists after the first occasion when he did not stand for the national anthem, Kaepernick stated that, “he would not show respect or pride in a flag for a country that continues to oppress African Americans and people of color.” He added that this was much bigger than any game and that it would be selfish on his part to look away. He also claims that there were bodies lying on the streets and people were getting away with murder. I don’t think Brennan understands why he chose not to stand fully. I think this also could have led to more attacks from other writers and reporters that have been inform of his true reasoning. I do not think he was disrespecting the flag or people that fight for it, but just making a stance to get
Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has created much controversy in the nation over his latest protest. During a preseason football game Kaepernick was photographed sitting during the national anthem (McKirdy). When asked about the action later, Kaepernick explained, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” (Wyche). The nation exploded. Many showed their support for the quarterback, expressing pride in him for “standing up” for the things he believes in. Others displayed their anger with him for disrespecting the flag and all the things the flag represents. After seeing what a backlash his action received, Kaepernick decided to kneel instead of sitting, claiming that his new way of protesting would show more respect for those in the line of duty (Anthem uproar). Although he has the right to protest, sitting during the national anthem is the wrong way to draw attention to a specific cause.
As many can tell, this subject has aggravated and divided the country. In the article about Kaepernicks’ protests, in the heading it states that because of his protests, the 49ers fans are burning their jerseys. On Facebook, a person videoed themselves burning a Kaepernick jersey captioned it states "He says he's oppressed making $126 million. Well, Colin, here's my salute to you.” [3]. This debate has brought up the subject of racism that many protest for, the country has been divided into people who agree with Kaepernick, people who disagree with him and people that don't care. Protesting is okay, but protesting isn't always peaceful and could
One day in a NFL preseason game Colin Kaepernick decided to take a kneel during the National Anthem and it created a national controversy. Many respected people agree with what he did and I agree too he made a statement for what he believed in. Many athletes before him made these kinds of statements for a cause that they believed in.
I agree with what Coach Kelly has to say and also think what Kaepernick did was not an issue and he has a right as a citizen to do what he feels. I am not trying to bash the national anthem and say what Kaepernick did was right. I think the anthem is a great thing for our country and all athletes should stand up for it because it is a long tradition but that doesn’t mean I disrespect Kaepernick’s decision. This is a free country and every individual has a right to do what he wants and express themselves in way they feel comfortable. There a lot more crimes worse than Kaepernicks that don’t get a big deal as much as his does.
While discussing the success of the demonstrations in the Speak for Yourself radio show, Fox Sports sports commentator, Colin Cowherd explained “I believe this entire thing, has been successful. He protests, there is pushback. He is booed, he is cheered. Some players followed, lost their endorsements… people are discussing it. This embodies what we are about.” In the United States we are entitled to our own beliefs and our ability to have a voice. Through the actions of the players voicing their beliefs, the entire scenario has gained national attention. Colin Kaepernick’s among other athletes concern over this situation demonstrates their affection for this country in the hopes for improvement of this country. Through his protests the entire country has engaged in debate his actions and the topic he stands for.
Colin Kaepernick exercised his first amendment rights by peacefully kneeling in protest for the mistreatment of colored people in this country. His main goal was to make people realize what is happening in this country. With the recent innocent killings of unarmed black men such as, Alton Sterling, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray and many others. The American flag is supposed to represent liberty, freedom, and justice for all but, these things are not happening for all right now in this country. The selfless act that Kaep is taking is way bigger then him, he is speaking for people who don’t have a voice or the platform to start a conversation.
The first season game for the San Francisco 49ers their quarterback Colin kaepernick sits for the national anthem, protesting the racial injustices that the country is facing. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid and getting away with murder.” Kaepernick said after the game.(Kaepernick pg. 2) One of the reason Colin Kaepernick started his
The former president, Barack Obama said “Kaepernick was exercising his constitutional right to make a statement”(pro 3). The Constitution and his platform as a professional athlete gives him the right to stand up for what he believes
I do not support Kaepernick’s actions. I think if he does not want to stand for our National Anthem then he can go find another place to call home. Even if he is not white he is still playing football for our country. He should still stand to support our soldiers that are fighting in battle and the people that have died in war, and our fire fighters and others that severed or are severing.
In 2016, Kaepernick gained national attention when he began protesting the alleged oppression of black people by not standing while the United States national anthem was being performed before the start of games. His actions prompted a wide variety of responses, including additional athletes in the NFL and other U.S. sports leagues protesting in various ways during the
All over North America there have been debates over Colin Kaepernick sitting during the national anthem before a game against the Green Bay Packers in late August. Nearly everyone has been talking about this topic even over a month later from television show hosts, to celebrities, even President Barack Obama, many of which have different views on this. The main argument that Americans were pleading was that by Kaepernick sitting during the anthem he was disrespecting our troops and that the oppression towards African Americans in the United States of America is not real.
Just so there is no doubt or misunderstanding from my family to the Green Bay Packers organization and the NFL: We are proud Americans. I served my community as a Police Officer for over 30 years. My family also sacrificed for me to do that over all of those years. Mr. Kaepernick's beginning of this whole thing, by his own words, was to protest against what he THINKS is police brutality and injustice. This narrative propagated by groups like BLM can only exist in an environment of emotions and falsehoods. When facts are brought to bear, their arguments fail to hold credibility. You have gravely offended me and the vast majority of my colleagues. As the football community, you have chosen to either propagate these protests during the one time
I support Kaepernick's actions and choices because, he is standing up for what’s right. He took a knee during the national anthem to protest about the issues that are currently happening , Jaweed Kaleem, a news reporter, for the Los Angeles Times, a news website explains about the actions of Colin Kaepernick and according to Kaepernick, "he set the national debate about race on a collision course with three pillar of American patriotism: football, the military and the police. I am going to continue to stand with people who are being oppressed" (Kaleem).
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has energetically inundated himself into debate by declining to remain for the playing of the national hymn in challenge of what he esteems are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the Assembled States.
