Nurses improve and save lives every day, which makes them the front line members of the healthcare team. The professional integrity of the nursing profession must always be maintained. The American Nurses Association (ANA) is an organization that seeks to advance and protect the nursing profession. The Standards of Professional Performance set by the ANA, ensure that the highest level of nursing care is given to the public. It is important for a nursing student to uphold these professional standards while in the classroom and clinical setting, in order to provide quality nursing care later in their career. Education is an important professional standard of nursing. The art of nursing and client care practices are constantly evolving. This constant evolution of the nursing profession means that once an individual has committed to a nursing career, they must also commit themselves to being a lifelong learner. As the old adage goes, “Two heads are better than one.” It takes an entire team of multiple healthcare disciplines to ensure positive client outcomes. Nursing is all about teamwork. Collaboration in the nursing field is defined as, “Multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, caregivers, and communities to deliver the highest quality of care” (WHO, 2013). A student nurse will work in collaboration with their professors and peers on multiple projects before moving into the clinical area. Once in the clinical setting, a student nurse will use a collaborative healthcare approach to ensure that all parties involved with a client’s care are working together for the best outcome. Collaboration allows you to gather information from all sources in order to obtain the entirety of the situation at hand.
