Collaboration In Nursing

It's important for nurses to be actively involved with an interdisciplinary team because of the increasing complexity and scope of patient problems. As these complexities and problems increase, patient care necessitates the combination of efforts of physicians from different disciplines. Actually, comprehensive patient care in today's healthcare settings incorporates attempts to solve problems that are beyond the scope of expertise and training of a single professional. Therefore, the active involvement of nurses in interdisciplinary teams is vital for the provision of comprehensive and effective patient care that help in dealing with the evolving patient problems

Interprofessional team collaboration for professional nurses is viewed as a method to improve the care and safety for patients. However, interprofessional team collaboration presents both advantages and challenges for nurses and other team members. One of the advantages is the coordination of care for the patient and the sharing of knowledge to improve the outcomes for the patient. Challenges for interprofessional team collaboration is: poor role-definition, miscommunication, conflict, lack of accountability for assignment of responsibilities and tasks (Reeves, 2012). This paper will discussion the role of a nurse on an interprofessional team and the challenges, why interprofessional teams promote patient safety, and strategies to promote success interprofessional teams.

Multiple studies have linked professionalism with high amounts of education (Blaney 1986, Jacobs and Bishop 1998, Hess 1996). Other professions such as lawyers, physicians, architects, etc. maintain a high-standardized level of education in which nursing fails to do so. The American Nurse Association (ANA) committee published a position paper that compared nursing to other professions and recommended that the ADN is not sufficient for this profession (Jacobs and Bishop 1998). Jacobs and Bishop (1998) made a point by stating that “the education of professional nurses must take place in institutions of higher learning with a bachelor of science in nursing degree required for beginning professional practice as they should be socialized with philosophic and value system that is compatible with this role” (p. 226). Nursing is an evolving profession where they must be able to utilize their critical thinking skills in order to “assess, diagnose, intervene, evaluate, be a leader, deliver evidence-based care and know how to research and interpret that evidence. These competencies are only achievable through higher education with the baccalaureate level being the launching point” (Tollick, 2013, p. 4).

According to American Nurses Association (2010) Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice, collaboration is defined as, “a professional healthcare partnership grounded in a reciprocal and respectful recognition and acceptance of: each partner’s unique expertise, power, and sphere of influence and responsibilities; commonality of goals; the mutual safeguarding of the legitimate interest of each party; and the advantages of such a relationship”.(p. 64). Collaboration amongst health care providers is very crucial in providing quality care to patients. Integration of disciplinary teams, improves communication, coordination, and most importantly, the safety and quality of patient care. It provides interaction between team members allowing

American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Professional Performance explains how all registered nurses do their work and activities consistently according to their professions that promote the wellbeing of their patients and communities (ANA, 2010a). The standards provide a mechanism to patients that they are been taken good care of and that the nurses know exactly what to do so as to provide high-quality care and the measures are in place to determine whether nursing care meets the standards. These activities are related to performance like ethics, quality of practice, education, communication, resources, leadership, environmental health, professional practice evaluation, and evidence-based practice and research. Registered nurses are responsible for their professional actions to themselves, their patients, their peers, and the community at large.

There should be no question that, the benefits of continuing education out weight any the of the reasons to forego acquiring/obtaining advance education. At present, some states like Georgia there are no continuing educational requirements for licensed practical nurses. In many states it is a nurses' responsibility to maintain their competence in the workplace. Hopefully with future improvement in the requirements for continuing education, advancing education will play a significant role in enhancing the quality of nursing care as well as provide nurses with an enriching experience. All the characteristic of professional are crucial to the safe and effective care of patients. “The fourth characteristic of professionalism in nursing involves continuing education and continued competency” (Nunnery 13).

The final stage in the Gibbs cycle is what I have learned from this incident and the action plans (Gibbs, 1988). From this group work, I have identified my skills and I know that, how it helped me to take part in the team work. For this Belbibns theory (1988) helped me identify my strength and recognize my role in the team. I am aware that in order to improve the collaborative working as a nurse; I need to improve my knowledge and skills about patient care. I have read through few books regarding team work for this assignment and it helped to improve my knowledge in collaborative practices. Thus, far the only thing that poses a challenge is learning the ropes of the department, but this will change as I am further acclimated. Bankston & Glazer (2013), suggested an approach to creating healthcare environments to be more susceptible to inter-disciplinary teamwork is to prepare those who will be graduating about how to practice collaborative teamwork. As an important statement, as a soon-to-be baccalaureate professional nurse, I will take skills learned during this clinical back to my place of employment and provide leadership to those on the department. Leading by example is important as a nurse, and we need to rely on each other for help and support no matter what skill level or need. I agree with your point on nurse’s role as sentry and collaborators. As we discussed in class, nurse as a sentry should watch over and protects the patient. However, in the scenario, the nurses failed to protect the patient when they let the physician to go against the patient’s wish and disregarded the do not resuscitate order. To start, it must be very hard for the family to accept the fact about the patient’s death. Yet, the decision that the physician made negatively impacted the family’s grieving process because it gave the family false hope when they have finally accepted the patient’s fate.

The critical components essential to patient safety are effective teamwork and sufficient communication. When we see the absence of these two components within a unit or facility it often leads to an increase in adverse events for patients. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 3 and 16% of all patients treated in hospitals are affected by adverse events. Standards in nursing practice involve a myriad of collaborated and approved beliefs with each as important as the other. To achieve the goals that are set when providing healthcare, it requires a comprehensive mindset, a positive outlook, and participation with a team that supports and encourages quality collaboration effort with others to reach the goals. Collaboration is the standard of nursing that I have chosen to write about. Collaboration means to work together with others to effect a change that leads to positive outcomes. This definition is particularly accurate when speaking of the sciences or in an intellectual content. Nursing is defined by the American Nurses Association as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.” (ANA, 2010). The multifaceted requirements needed to provide individualized attention to the community can only be accomplished with a strong foundation that embraces and nurtures quality collaboration.
