College Admissions Essay: Achieving A Doctoral Degree

Imagine a mother and a newborn child. Now picture the mother abandoning the baby with no one to feed or take care of it. It is very likely that the baby would die. The Nile, a major river in northeastern Africa, could be considered as Ancient Egypt’s mother. Because Egypt was so isolated, the river was all they ever knew. The economy and belief system of Egypt were totally dependant on the Nile River, and if it did not exist, neither would this powerful empire.

Former baseball player Tommy Lasorda once said, “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.” The journey of our life is full of winding paths and concrete obstacles whose sole goal is to slow us down, and to attempt to block us from reaching our ultimate goal in life, whatever that may be. These barriers are there for several different reasons, whether it be mental or physical. Sometimes these obstacles are motivated by fear, other times they exist simply because we have to make a decision, and that decision can be life changing. But through our determination, and through our perseverance, we can achieve what these barriers told us was impossible, and can pursue the path in our life that leads us to our ultimate self. Throughout my life, I have had thousands of barriers stand in my path. And the only way I was able to defeat them was through conquering my fears, and breaking my limits in order to achieve excellence.

I am a southern bred leader, pursuer, and helper whos mission is to spread peace, love, unity, and respect among many to create a world of cheerfulness and brotherhood. I am Austin William Carricoand this is my story. All my life I have lived in the small town of Crestview and grew up among the wilderness along with its inhabitants. As the town grew exponentially into a vast city, my heart, my mind, and my soul grew with it, learning the ways to help others and slowly turning from a boy to the young man I am today. I now attend Collegiate High School continuing my journey at the ripe age of fifteen, still promoting peace as a mission for others even when I left my former school, Niceville High.

Driving to Starbucks in Arvada and the weather was calm, cool and collective. It became the most interesting, graceful and intense summer that year. It was summer of 2012 and I sat across my bible study leader surrounded by coffee at Starbucks as she told me to grip the coffee cup. She used it as an analogy as accepting Christ in my life. As I took the coffee cup and accepted Christ as my savior, my life has forever changed and the blessings have been flowing into my life that only GOD can give. I have chosen Colorado Christian University as my choice of college to finish out my bachelor’s degree because I have a strong ambition to chase after a relationship with Jesus. I want to use my spiritual gifts I have been given to spread the love of Jesus

Acquiring a college degree is such an essential step in life that it has turned into a central part of the "American Dream". Earning a college degree, land a position, purchase a house, raise a family. It may not generally be that basic, but rather everything begins when you start for a college degree. Acquiring a college degree is all about bringing opportunities into your life. It prepares you, both for mentally and socially, for your career and in your personal life too. When you get a college degree, there are more opportunities for getting a new job. For most people, the ability to earn money is the most important things. College degree is the shortcut to get success. Studies have shown that college graduates earn more money than people who don’t earn college degrees. Earning higher money depends on the degree. For example, if you do a master’s degree, than you would make more money than those people doing bachelor’s degree.

Who am I personally, after 50 years of being me, I am still a work in progress. I grew up in a tiny ski resort town, on the Appalachian Mountains, in New Jersey. My father grew up in New Jersey, but my mother is from Havana Cuba. My father never graduated from High School, but my mother did. They did not believe in higher education, especial for girls. They wanted us to get married and start a family, I always knew that was not for me. So I followed my dreams and traveled the world. Meeting exciting, educated people all along the way, my travels showed me all the things that I had been missing out on living in a tiny town. By traveling, I learned how to live independently, be frugal, and enjoy life, that is what made me a strong woman. My weakness is, that I wear my heart on my sleeve, I am temperamental, and no confidant.

After I graduate, I hope to attend a college with medical engineering based programs. The only reason I possess this dream is because I have a little cousin who had to have below his right knee amputated when he was just 3-4 months old. To this day he can walk and run and he is not any different from anyone else, which is why I want to help people just like him. To fulfill my dream I plan on trying to get a scholarship from University Of Iowa because they not only have a great school and good classes to take, but so I can be close to home as well. The skills I will need are working with math and science. I need to focus on and learn how to build a good eye for design, communication and team working skills, and how to be able to have a

To bottle the essence in this premier moment- the liquid of success and pride, the raw emotion in that moment that has propelled my character to it's actualized state of being- would have been a fantasy amongst reality. I open my tear dotted eyes as my ears resonate the echoes of confetti cannons and cheers from the arena. My muscles ache with joy, and my mind is chasing the realization that is at hand. I have just won a midwestern color guard championship. The golden haze of chaos that ensues is one that has forever imprinted on my mind, a haze that lingers in my peripheral vision, in constant search of a worthy emotion to compare to. The prime success in this moment alone- has been the sole fuel in the flame of my determination and strive for achieved ambitions.

If someone asked me where I am going to be in ten years, this would be my answer. I will have a great, high-paying job, and beautiful wife and family, and a nice sports car parked in front of my lovely house. When I look into the future, I see myself being successful and happy. Even though I always pictured myself this way, I never worried too much about how I would get there. I feel the Suffolk University can lay the groundwork for making these dreams into reality.

I have a very good idea as to what career I would want after college. The plan for me would be for me to go get a MA in history after FDU and then go into education. I think the goal for me would be to get a Ph.D. in history, but that would be further down the line. But if I was not on this path my two other career options would be public relations and counseling.

Throughout the ages, Europe has been a place where foreigners go to seek adventure, history, the arts, education and romance. Since a young age I have been intrigued by the European culture in movies, history, food, books, as well as languages. After receiving my Master’s degree, I would like to live and perform in Europe, where I hope to also work as a translator. Because of my background, I have been determined to live abroad and explore from a young age. I am from a multi-cultural family and was raised with a great respect for traveling, learning languages, and understanding different cultures and practices. My mother is from Bogotá, Colombia and my father is of Danish and Italian descent. I grew up with both parents speaking Spanish in

Growing up in Philadelphia, I am well acquainted with University of Pennsylvania and its campus. I am a frequent flier of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, so walking through the campus nearly every day, gave me some insight. I remember seeing students sitting and eating lunch on a giant, broken button that is located in the middle of the campus, and I remember the beautiful red library that students would rush in and out of during finals week. I sat on the button statue, and realized, “Yeah, I want to go here.” From that day on, I was determined to enter your institution.

I am mostly interested in pursuing doctoral studies to achieve my ultimate goal to become a prolific researcher as well as an inspiring, knowledgeable university-level teacher. Consequently, in the short-term, my goal is to gain knowledge and skills related to research and teaching especially during my PhD program. Additionally, in the long-run, I will spend most of my time practicing the knowledge and skills that I will have already acquired by teaching classes and seminars, doing research projects, as well as writing qualified academic articles and books. I will dedicate most of the time that I have after gaining a Doctorate degree in Business to the advancement of the academic excellence.

College is a very important time in anyone’s life. It’s a time where boys and girls turn into men and women. It’s a time where people learn valuable life skills, and how to live on their own. Choosing the right college is an incredibly important decision. Colleges come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, specialties and strong points, as well as cultures and diversities.
