Certain emotions cannot go unfelt. For me, gratitude and pride rush through my veins at the sound of Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” or the image of Ole Glory against a painted sky. Paul Tsongas once said, “America is hope. It is compassion. It is excellence. It is valor.” The list goes on. Undoubtedly, listing what America isn’t would be much easier.
Young boys, seemingly in their nature, often play with their friends and pretend to be soldiers. I recall using nerf guns and walkie-talkies for top secret missions around the neighborhood. It wasn't until I grew older that I began to understand a soldier’s true significance. I soon became infatuated with American history. By the time the school curriculum covered an era

Another $24,000 this year seemed unattainable, but we renewed our determination to get more veterans to our nation’s capital. Eventually, Columbus Honor Flight had enough funds to take a 747 filled with veterans, again.
As a senior, I decided to take leadership into my own hands. Starting in the summer of 2015, I began collecting donations for the third trip to D.C. This campaign will eventually turn into my Senior Project, and I do it with pride. I find it challenging to achieve the right balance for everything in my life: school, work, friends, sports, rest, and whatever else joins in the mix. But when I have a passion for something, I always strive to make it work. And I have a passion to give back to those Americans who gave so much.
Being a great American means so much more than just honoring those who served. We sometimes take for granted the luxuries of the United States. America still stands as the land of opportunity. Every American should wake up appreciating his or her blessings. My experiences with Honor Flight have broadened my perspective and molded me into who I am today. The endless opportunity in this land is because of the brave. Freedom isn’t
Honor Flight is very obvious about what they are doing for the veterans. Honor Flight’s Mission Statement is “Transport America's veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.” Their Goal is: “Helping every single veteran in America, willing and able of getting on a plane or a bus, visits THEIR memorial.” Their Priority is: “Top priority is given to America's most senior heroes — survivors of World War II and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit THEIR memorial. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis.” The eligibility to go on an Honor Flight is “All men and women serving stateside or overseas.” Their philosophy is: “Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, the Honor Flight Network believes it's equally important that they actually get to visit and experience THEIR memorial.” (About Honor Flight Network, 2007). Finally, their motto is a quote Will Rogers “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” (About Honor Flight Network, 2007).
Our nation past was, well, not always perfect. Without some of our veterans, our country wouldn’t be as free as it is. Veterans continue to make our country a free country, which also makes it a better place to live in. Veterans stood up for our country; whether the ones forced to go during the draft, or the ones who voluntarily go. Whether the cause, they were always ready to go and fight for the people’s freedom. We really do see how great these people are, I mean, they risked their life for ours to be
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These words should sound familiar to most people. They were included in the Declaration of Independence, which was mainly written by Thomas Jefferson. The Declaration announced America’s separation from Britain, tyranny, and the monarchy.
One often misinterprets the true meaning of war, believing it is only a dispute that is ended through fighting. In fact, war is more than just fighting. It is a battle where many brave souls lose their lives for protecting the country they love. Many of the rights we have today would not have been possible without the sacrifice of many brave American soldiers. Instead of living in a tranquil and prosperous nation, we could be living in a nation that resembles countries such as Africa, living under poor conditions and extreme poverty. It is imperative to take into consideration that the veterans we have today have made an impact on our nation and we owe much of our respect to them. Not many people have the courage to take on the heavy and overwhelming duty of going to war, knowing that death is imminent. Along with that, many of them have experienced traumatizing moments that have scarred them for life. Because of this, there is much appreciation and respect inclined towards
Defining what really is to be an American does not sound as easy as it seem. It will always be complex process. As immigration continues to fuel the growth of the population of our nation, racial and ethnic gap increase and evolve along with it. Racial and ethnic identities become more and more convoluted and difficult to understand. Race and ethnicity continue to intermingle and push a cultural shift in the US– a shift that plays a significant role in redefining America in a day-to-day basis.
I was born and raised in the United States but my family was not born here, they came from an area south of Los Angeles, Mexico. In the border between the United States and Mexico, many immigrants have lost their lives attempting to achieve their promise dream. Many immigrants who cross the border pursue the American Dream. My family was one of the many immigrant families who attempted and fortunately succeeded in crossing over the border. My father’s family originated from Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. Many families just like mine risked their lives attempting to not only get to the border, but to cross it as well. My family did not differ much from the other immigrant families who sought to achieve economic stability and prosperity here
Opportunity is defined in Webster's Dictionary as 'A good position, chance or prospect for achievement'; which is easily connected to the idea of The American Dream. After all, isn't America known as 'The land of opportunity';? Most people came to America, and still come for that matter, in search of a better life through hard work and dedication to their cause. In 'Chinaman's Chance: Reflections on the American Dream'; by Eric Liu, it is stated that '...it (the American Dream) does demand the opportunity to achieve progress-and values the opportunity as much as the achievement.'; This statement is imperative because it gives recognition to those who try to reach their goals, even if they cannot achieve them fully. Throughout history, we
From a simple ribbon affixed on the back of a pick-up truck with the words “SUPPORT OUR TROOPS” to tough-as-nails, stern Uncle Sam, war propaganda has always been present throughout history. But this type of propaganda differs from the actual experience of war; it glamorizes the entire idea to instill support. However, in the novel A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah, his experience with war as a boy soldier is anything but glamorous. Young and with fleeting innocence, his form of propaganda came from the corporal of the army, ingraining the idea to “visualize the enemy, the rebels who killed your parents, your family, and those who are responsible for everything that has happened to you” (Beah 112). As his experience
a. The impact cultures in North America have on the United States is that each region adapted the traditions and/or beliefs of those who settled in that area by maintaining dance, music, and crafts. Many English settlers did not respect the Native American cultures, and were seen as uncivilized and/or savages. Basically there was a clash of cultures, with new ideas pushing away old ways and mayor cultures oppressing others.
The new “American Dream”, why make it when you can just sit and do nothing all day while taxpayers money goes to you and the rest of the country forgets about you? I mean, I want to be able to be lazy and never have to work while other people have to pay for me by my own doing and my own choice. I am talentless, useless, and absolutely no help to society and that's why I've made it my goal in life to live in terrible conditions with the world assuming that they, of all people, know what I need and what I’ve done to let my life to get to this point. I could have a job that barely pays enough for me to be able to live and I if don’t, there's no way that I'm going to be able to get one. I mean, who would ever hire someone that's chosen to let their life get like this?
The article “children on the battlefield”by Marci Scwartz describes the experience of boys in the military during the Civil War.
People from back then were a lot better with finding different ways to do thing if that first way didn't work. They didn't have anything do it for them they also were not as modern so they didn't have machines do it for them.
America to me is pride. I am proud to be an American because I get the rights to my freedom. I can get a good education and strive to do well in America. Showing pride for your country is like cheering on your local sports team. The fourth of July is a special day to show our pride because every American celebrates by dressing up in red, white, and blue.
I visualize America as a diversified nation filled with poverty, limited access to an amenity of education, followed by rising hot temperatures due to global warming. I can do no more than voice my opinion on this essay, therefore, why not? I believe that those are the three major issues the country faces today, but most certainly not all. My vision for America includes: a decrease in poverty, access to affordable, enrichment of education, and a more Earth-friendly environment. These issues have been stated, but it’s time to resolve them -for the better of our nation.
I’m happy yet my emotions get mixed in with the hate of loneliness casted out by my self pity soul , people perceive my smile as a blessing of hope but instead it’s a cry of help .
