College Admissions Essay: English Language Development In Elementary School

Though I was in English Language Development in elementary school, I do not believe I ever really needed it. Even so, I am grateful I was put into ELD because when I graduated from the program in third grade I was taken on a field trip to the University of California, Merced. Before that trip I did not know what college was; my parents had only attended grade school so I did not have exposure to higher education. The school was so grand and new, and in that moment I saw the it l knew that I wanted to someday go to a school as magnificent as that one. In this group, we volunteer around the city of Atwater when and where needed. It ranges from helping deliver food to the needy, collecting toys for children, or volunteering at Castle Kid’s Day. Being a part of this group and the part of the community has opened a door to a whole new world. A world that makes me feel useful and valuable, and that shows that anyone and everyone can make a difference in their community. I have also been a part of few clubs at school: Key Club, Community Counts Club, and California Scholarship Federation. Additionally, I am part of this years Academic Decathlon team, an arduous but lively class and event. I was able to do all of this because I am an English Learner. If I had not learned English, and learned it well, I do not believe I would be where I am today. Learning English paved the way for a plethora of opportunities. It allowed me to communicate with more people and therefore be more involved.
