Although mostly unknown in the United States and around the world, in the city of El Cajon, California, I am among the 70,000 that belong to the Chaldean culture, a Christian-Catholic minority from Iraq . Over the course of my educational path, I sometimes wondered why I did not have blonde hair and blue eyes like many of my peers, but I finally came to understand that my background is an important trait as it reflects who I am among many and what I value: a strong connection to religion and faith, close familial ties, and the power to believe that anything is possible. The adversity that my parents faced as immigrants from the religious persecution in Iraq has given me the motivation to succeed as I am immensely honored and grateful for the …show more content…
College was much more different than high school and I did not adapt accordingly. Doubting my chances of matriculating into dental school, I switched my focus to establishing a career with my bachelors degree. Upon graduating with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, I landed a job in the biotechnology industry. I was content with my career for about a few months, but I was missing a sense of fulfillment. Instead of serving individual people, I was serving the demands of a fortune 500 corporation. I want my life to be so much more than that. I want to be known as someone who brings faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day during their darkest hour of need, and that is something that is life calling for me. I am forever grateful for working as a Scientist at Becton Dickinson, however, my work was indirectly advancing the world of health and I lost sight of my initial vision which was to directly serve
I remember waking up that day and that feeling in my stomach, knowing what was about to happen. Growing up I knew about my father's sickness. My family, I recall, was always supportive. No one ever thinks about how one day, everyone you’re around for years, can just vanish. I cherished my friends as I was growing up. I lived there for a majority of my life, up until fourth grade. I remember sitting at a neighbor's house and having the mother come into the room and inform me that I need to be home swiftly. As I ran home, my head was crowded with thoughts to the point where I could not even think about why I was supposed to be home quickly. That day marked the transition of what would be the biggest change in my life. As by dad became sicker,
Former baseball player Tommy Lasorda once said, “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.” The journey of our life is full of winding paths and concrete obstacles whose sole goal is to slow us down, and to attempt to block us from reaching our ultimate goal in life, whatever that may be. These barriers are there for several different reasons, whether it be mental or physical. Sometimes these obstacles are motivated by fear, other times they exist simply because we have to make a decision, and that decision can be life changing. But through our determination, and through our perseverance, we can achieve what these barriers told us was impossible, and can pursue the path in our life that leads us to our ultimate self. Throughout my life, I have had thousands of barriers stand in my path. And the only way I was able to defeat them was through conquering my fears, and breaking my limits in order to achieve excellence.
Being a first generation student requires more will power than I ever thought I owned. In middle school I was denied by my parents the chance to shadow a pharmacist because they saw this as an unattainable dream. It wasn’t until I began working with disabled children and tried to pursue a nursing degree, that I found the courage and determination to pursue all of my dreams in spite of my upbringing.
I am a girl who grew up with low income. Along with that my parents are both deaf alone with my big sister I watch after who has down syndrome. My father is no longer in my life so it’s my responsibility to take care of them. This isn’t a sob story about how awful my life sounds but how much I embrace it. Without my responsibilities I would have never grown to handle so many things I have accomplished. I was able to take college courses at Normandale Community College for free through Post Secondary Education Option (PSEO). I will also become my sister’s legal guardian this early summer. I work two jobs and try really hard to make sure I’m doing well in my classes along with making sure my family is okay. Why I am saying all this is because I feel like I
Something that make me smile, gets me excited, makes me do something is softball. I have played ball all since the day I could walk. I started off playing baseball since I was 2 years old. Then at age 8 I went on to play softball for a select softball team in Pearland. Playing softball has always made me smile! I love the intensity, excitement, and the teamwork that is used to play ball. We all look out for each other and try to pick each other up even when we are not all in the spirit. Some activities that involve science, technology, engineering, and math that I find to be fun is robotics and underwater robotics. Robotics has always been a big part in my life because my dad is a robotics teacher for this school and I always loved playing
Throughout our lives, we make choices and decisions that change our lives and others in positive and/or negative ways. It is these decisions that determine how we will be remembered, our legacy. When I graduate high school, I want to be remembered by the qualities that define me as a person and the good I’ve done for others. Throughout the years, I’ve been often been described by my family and friends as bold, confident, outgoing, and hardworking. Not only are these characteristics important to me, but they are important to my family, as they want to leave a legacy in the name of our family. The qualities I have exhibited are the same qualities past family members have shown and are remembered for. Through always putting out my best effort when it comes to work and school, I have shown my dedication and discipline. Through doing what I can to help others, I have displayed my commitment to world peace, the betterment of the world as a whole, and the yearning to make a difference in someone’s life other than my
Passion is necessary to excel. Once someone loses desire or motivation for something it becomes quite difficult to continue doing well in that field. I went through a crisis of lost motivation in my first two years of high school.
I’ve always been that kind of guy who was good with numbers. Throughout my school years, I never had the desire to put in extra effort when it came to English classes or written works. My focus really seemed to rotate around a desire to be a hundred and ten percent into computers and technologies. I assumed that I would always have access to word processors or the Internet if I ever needed spell checking or literacy advice, or at least that’s how I summarized it. So, that philosophy only worked for so long, in a nutshell, less than two years into my first career job!
A college education will help me fulfill my dreams of using my knowledge for a greater purpose in the world. There are many problems in the world that I would like to at least shed light if not help resolve. For example, mental health within people of color, isn’t as vital as it should be. As a person who has suffered from depression as well as having family members that suffer from mental illnesses, I have personally seen how something so critical can be swept under the rug and that someone dealing with it not have the support they need. I am currently majoring in Psychology and my goal after medical school is to psychiatrist and create a non-profit organization, devoted to creating safe spaces regarding people of color and their mental health. My college education will help me learn the patterns of humans and their thought process consciously and subconsciously to ensure that the setting of my future organization is aiding those who
I grew up on a quiet street in Winter Park, Florida in a quaint middle class family of four. My mother has a small law practice with a tangerine tree in the backyard where she brings the family dogs every day, and my father just retired from his position as the most senior judge at the Orange County Courthouse. My older brother was first a competitive golfer and then a national debate champion before he graduated first in his class from Notre Dame and went to work for Bain and Company. Before all that, he was the architect of the forts we built in our backyard and played the Aragorn to my Éowyn. These people, who shaped and instructed my childhood, brought me up on C.S. Lewis and courthouse visits, P.G. Wodehouse and long ethics debates, and craftiness and self-sufficiency. My dad tried taking me to the golf course, which was when I discovered how much I hate mosquitoes and Florida weather, but it was my mom who took me to see our local ballet company. Though I was forced to wear a dress (one of
In fall of 2017, I will be attending college. I’m not quite sure where precisely, but when I do arrive on campus, I will not be alone. I will carry the weight of my mother’s ambitions with me.
The pursuit of attending college has been a personal desire and goal for as long as I can remember. While maintaining a rigorous academic course load, I also had a passion for excelling in my music endeavors. My superior GPA and yearly testing scores broadened my career choices but made it difficult to discern whether I wanted to pursue something in the field of medicine, education, or music. The academics, experiences, and activities that I have been involved with throughout my life, definitely have shaped and encouraged me to think deeper about what it is that I would truly love to excel in on the college level and pursue as a life-long career.
The best quality that I obtain in my opinion is dedication. To have this quality you have to be willing to put in one hundred percent and never give up. Throughout school, I’ve strived to do my best in athletics, extra curricular events, and most important my grades. You can see my dedication towards sports the most. You can see the passion I have for all the sports I participate in and the willing to be out there.
Birth and Early Life Everyone that has been born into the world has stories to tell about their early life. Some have joyful and funny stories and some have tragic stories. I hope that everyone has the capability to tell a good story about their early life. My birth and my early life were really all over the place. My mom was lucky enough to have twins so there was two of us brought into the world at once.
One definition for the phrase “within reach” is something that is within the capacity of someone to attain or achieve something. For me, I know being successful in high school, sports, and in life are within reach. It will be a struggle, but I am willing to have a hard time now so later down the road it will all pay off. In order to be successful in those topics, you have to be willing to sacrifice your time, friends, and your comfortable habits. But first, if I want success to be within reach, I need to focus on my schooling and grades.
