College life is not always easy for athletes who get accepted into a school. Especially if they do not receive an academic or athletic scholarship. Housing, meal plans, books, etc. Are a lot of things that add stress to a student-athlete. Tuition for college isn't going to decrease to help these students out either. Universities will acquire their money one way or another. Sports gear, transportation, and other off-campus duties are all reasons college athletes should receive payment for participating in college athletics.
There are plenty of sports in college for students to enjoy. Basketball, for both men and women. Football, just for men of course. Tennis, and also track are other sports that students have the ability to participate in, but can sometimes be unavailable to these student athletes, because of extras fees and/or costs for the sport(s). Colleges should be held accountable for supplying these athletes with whatever it is to help them thrive through college and sports.
$17,600 does not come along easy for the normal student in college. Yet, this is the average price for college tuition (Adams 3). Some colleges actually expect students to come up with this amount of money in the time

About 1 to 2% of students in Bachelor's degree programs obtain athletic scholarships (Westfall 2). Even though this number is increasing at a rate of 4.5% every year, the actual percentage of students who receive them has remained under 1.8% since 1995-1996 (Westfall 2). More and more students that enter college plan on participating in sports. About 15,000 more students are playing college sports than in 2009-2010, which is a record jump since the 1980’s (NCAA 2). With the increase of students playing college sports, more and more athletes will need the financial aid to again, be equipped with appropriate sports
$9,139 is the average cost of college for a student to go attend an in-state four year public university (“College Costs”). This amount does not include housing, food, books, or supplies; this can end up totaling near $10,000, but imagine if both of these figures were paid for you. This would mean you would pay nothing to attend a four year college, and this is the reality for many individuals today; these people are commonly known as student-athletes. Many student-athletes receive full scholarships to schools covering their room, board, tuition, books and any other expenses they may incur because they are playing a sport at the institution. Not to mention many of these individuals will receive stipends to use at their own will. However, these same students feel like these benefits are not enough (“Here’s”). Some students feel like they are being cheated out of their talents because NCAA uses them in media and in other profitable ventures but they are not paid. Others just feel that the role of a college athlete should include receiving payment since they are like professional athletes and see their sport as their only profession. Student- athletes may have a similar role to professional athletes, but do not deserve the same compensation because they are receiving their payment through a school scholarship.
Most people don’t know that college athletes are already getting paid in different ways than just direct money. "A student athlete at a major conference school on a full scholarship is likely receiving a package of education, room, board, and coaching/training worth between $50,000 and $125,000 per year depending on their sport and whether they attend public or private university"(Dorfman). These athletes get training and coaching for free that professionals pay $2,000-$3,000 per week for. They also receive free schooling if they received scholarships from the school. They can also have free room which means the athletes don’t have to pay for their houses. The average college student pays $20,000 in tuition that these athletes get
These students are given more than what is necessary to compete and perform at a high level. College again is a platform for higher education in preparation for the professional, and real world. A lot of athletes are aware that they may not even make it to the professional level. College is meant for an academic education first, then the privilege to play a sport or get involved second. For this reason along with many others are reasons why college athletes should focus on their respective sport and not about the source of
An athletic scholarship is already enough to pay for a college athlete. In text 4, It states “College athletes are already being paid with an athletic scholarship that is worth around $20-$50,000 per year.” This quote states that a college athlete gets paid a lot from a scholarship. This quote proves my claim because it's being said that college athletes are already paid by the $20-$50,000 scholarship. Also in Text 4, it states “Oh, and that does not even begin the factor in the medical and travel expenses, free gear, top-notch coaching, unlimited use of elite athletic facilities and a national stage to audition for a job in the
Should College Athletes Be Paid? Did you know that the average out of state tuition for college is 35,370 dollars, and college athletes get that for free for their ability to play a sport? In a total of four years in a out of state college the total is $141,480. Instead of you paying for college all you have to do is play the sport for free education.
College athletics have become popular over time over the past few decades. Student athletes need to be determined, committed, and focused. The biggest trait needed by the athlete is dedication. The amount of dedication needed to be a student athlete could be overwhelming. Between classes and workouts could exhaust even the best athlete mentally and physically. Students athletes should be proud to get free education and play sports, but education should be valued more than sports . As an athlete, time management is the key to surviving. Athletes need a balance, maintaining at least 40 hours of practice a week, 30 hours a week of class time, and getting some sleep into their schedule too. Maintaining all of these aspects deserves some more credit, more than just a free education. The NCAA can afford to pay athletes, the NCAA makes about 12 billion every year. The NCAA money comes mostly from TV and marketing and makes up less than 10% of all college athletics money. The rest comes from school ticket sales and student fees from the school itself. The NCAA since 2006 profit have doubled since time has gone by and is still increasing from tournaments and school funding. Athletes play an active role in the promotions of these activities,
They have no other means to compensate for this need since sports practices take up all of their time after their academic responsibilities. Paying college students, a little extra, would actually go a long way, especially for the ones belonging to a family with low income, which for the most part they are a part of. However, paying student athletes could, in fact, ruin the important role of the universities, which obviously is to offer a good education. The skills and education that theses athletes receive are an education of a lifetime and the education that they receive in college would not even come close to the amount they would receive if they were paid. The other thing I would like to mention is how much these players are bringing into the school and the school officials make possibly millions off of their names without the players not seeing a cent out of it except a full ride scholarship but still have nights where they are broke like every other student with no money for food.
College athletes have a lot on their plate between jobs, classes, practice and games. How are athletes expected to afford attending college, practicing for their team while trying to manage at least a 2.5 GPA? Colleges should pay their students for their time of trying to keep the college 's sports reputation well; the students are still trying to juggle their classes so they will not receive a failing grade.
Otherwise, they would be stuck paying for the tuition without scholarships. They should realize that they have an advantage that most others do not have. If you think of it, each student athlete has a scholarship that can save them $200,000 for four years.
Big time college athletes should be paid for their efforts because an athletic scholarship does not cover the full cost of college attendance. (“Study of Scholarship Shortfall Numbers Reveal College Athletes Pay To Play”; Thompson; D’Aquila). While in the recruiting process many high-school athletes are under the impression that they will receive a “full scholarship” for college and won’t have to pay anything (“Study of Scholarship Shortfall Numbers Reveal College Athletes Pay To Play”). However, college athletes often end up paying for necessities such as school supplies and clothing from their own pocket (“Study of Scholarship Shortfall Numbers Reveal College Athletes Pay To Play”). This is partially due to the NCAA setting a maximum
While in college athlete endure other expensive that any college student will face. (Hobsin and Rich 2015) B. Many athletes live in poverty and family rely on food stamps and other government resources. 1.
Almost no people who make this argument reflect on this before they talk about it. Colleges and universities give many of their student athletes tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of scholarships, many of which are full rides, for them to play for the school. College educations are without a doubt very expensive and very valuable in today’s society. When student athletes are given free college education they should not be entitled to more payment. Why should they deserve more if they are still just
Before, college athletics was a stepping stone towards the athletes professional future. Now in the 21st century, it is a lucrative business. D-I college athletics is the majority of income for major universities. They collect money from ticket sales, merchandise, T.V. contracts, etc. The athletes, however, receive a scholarship and not much more. Even though receiving a college education is something most people would not complain about, when these athletes practice longer than the average American work week and don 't receive money to sustain themselves, it is time for a change. Athletes dedicate their lives to a sport and train hard to make it big. There has been a lot of controversy whether or not student athletes should be paid, and
College athletes don’t have to worry about paying for books, meals, or the sport equipment they use to work out with. They don’t need money to throw away on food because they possibly have a certain meal plan provided by their athletic trainers. College athletes still have time to get a job during the off-season. Many people have to pay for college and student athletes with scholarships are the lucky ones who
Most wish to advance their education so they can receive a degree and work in an enjoyable field. Ergo, student-athletes do not need compensation because they are awarded the privilege to play on their college’s or university’s sports team. However, not everyone agrees that people choose to attend colleges and universities just to earn a degree. Some argue that student-athletes attend college only to play the sport they enjoy and receive a salary.
