In the 1950s, The Truman Commission on Higher Education helped push the community college movement. They said that education would promote “equal liberty and equal opportunity to differing individuals and groups” (Ostar 168). This group wanted the citizens of America to be able to understand their rights and duties in the democratic nation.

Regardless of what your major may be, college offers you knowledge that you will use throughout your entire life. It arms you with skills such as communication, critical thinking, analytical capabilities, cultural literacy and leadership. John Henry Newman believed that acquiring such skills was the most important aspect of college and that its purpose was “training good members of society” (53). However at some point there was a shift in opinion as to what the purpose of college is, people began to see it simply as a means to an end, a pathway to financial stability.
