College football players are naturally at risk of injury. The reasons why are due to the aggressiveness of the sport, lack of proper technique, technology, and equipment used by players. The crazy thing is however, that's what we sign up for on a regular basis. There have been rule changes to help avoid injury, but a few rules isn't what is going to fix things. There must be new gear and medical test to make sure players are safe. If players wish to continue playing for a long period of time attention to their bodies is a necessity. Far too many football players careers are cut short due to brain injury and damage.Football players need better medical attention for their bodies. Football is a hard nosed aggressive sport that most Americans love. …show more content…
Football players need a variety of gear including: helmets, shoulder pads, cleats, mouthpiece, gloves, leg pads, and other gear depending on your personal needs. The gear sometimes just won’t do its job all the way. Personally I have experienced the issue of faulty equipment. In my career I have experienced: sprained ankles, concussion, ripped Medial Collateral Ligament, gum trauma, and fractured fingers and open hand wounds. All of this can’t be avoided ,but some things are more avoidable than others. The gum trauma I had was the most severe one that hit at home for me. It wasn’t by any means painful to me,but isn’t really an injury you hear about in football. On a trip to the dentist they told me I received the kind of trauma you get from boxing or a major crash that’s why they would bleed occasionally. It was all due to the kind of mouth piece I was using it just didn’t properly take care of my mouth the way it should have. Sadly this is true for a lot of gear that is used in the sport of football. Especially if you aren’t one of the top players coming in. I as a young man try not to hold any grudges with any human being. But, when I first got to college here I had a major problem with the coaches that we did have. They tried to just throw freshman into less reliable equipment then other guys. I was a freshman who played so I got a little step up in the equipment. Even my equipment had issues. Gear shouldn’t be given based on status ,but rather a need for protection. A new helmet company is being established that is looking to change everything. This is why college football players need better medical attention for their
There are way too many injuries in football. Not even just in the pros because it happens whenever you can get a football game going. The number one reason they need to fix helmets is because almost 6% of NFL players get a concussion (Jones 2018). That’s way too many. Another reason is about 3.5 middle school students receive treatment after a game (Mills 2016). My final reason is high school had 135,000 concussions reported (“Youth Sports Injuries Statistics”). Football commissioners are already getting started.
Jamestown and Plymouth Plantation are just like any other city now, they are different in many ways but still are similar in ways. Plymouth Plantation had a leader, Bradford, he was very strong and knew what he was doing because of his experiences it didn't “crash and burn”. Unlike Jamestown's leader, Smith, he was a strong leader at first and he knew what he was doing but then he left and Jamestown went bad. Both of them were sent to go explore the new land and see what is in it. When going through it there were always obstacles, but they managed to overcome it and continue with their voyage.
Bone crushing forces are delivered to football players of all ages and sizes. According to ESPN, the average Pop Warner football player will experience 107 collisions per season in games, with some collisions being upwards of 80 G's, or the same forces that college football players experience. For comparison, NASA astronauts only experience six to eight G’s of force when they leave earth’s atmosphere, yet people still think it’s okay to let kids as young as 8 experience forces up to ten times what astronauts experience. According to Livestrong, which is a foundation that promotes an active and healthy lifestyle, it says that because of the constant forces being applied to players’ joints and ligaments that they are very susceptible to torn ligaments, and pulled muscles. These injuries can develop into severe arthritis and joint pain later in life if the players endure enough trauma. Ricky Watters-a former NFL player for the San Francisco 49ers-gave his football testimony recently, he said, “I’ve suffered five concussions, tore two ligaments in my knee, I have five pins in my left foot and a metal envelope encasing my femur, I also suffered a cracked sternum and have failing kidneys at the age of 43. I’ve played when I know I shouldn’t have, but now I suffer pain from head to toe every day of my life.” Now parents, the decision is up to you, do you want your kids suffering the same way as Ricky
Student players put themselves at risk every day when they play sports. They have the chance to get injured or even get a concussion. A concussion is able to leave the players with a long-term effect on them or their brain. If the player hasn't had enough time to recover from the concussion and they get another one while they're playing. Then the multiple concussions will put them at risk of having a more severe effect on their brain. So student players who have gotten a concussion while playing, should be sitting out for a longer period of time before they are put back in.
Herm Edwards former football player and coach told SB nation, "If you're injured, you can't play. Hurt? The only guys who don't hurt in football are the ones who don't play,” (Bien). Although Herm Edwards does make a good point, there is a major difference between getting some bruises and permanent brain damage. Football players will not protect brains but a better protocol will. The protocol should reduce the risk of brain damage (Kilgore). Concussions have enough of an impact that they can affect someone long term. It is evident that this is something that in the future a former athlete would regret. Protocol needs to be enforced and more strict if there is any hope of saving these football players from doing something they might
A great majority of kids and adults football careers are ending shortly because of brain damage and concussions. To this day scientist and people in sports are trying to find a way to decrease the number of brain damage and concussions. There been so many head injuries in the game of football. It got real serious over the past 20 years. In the NFL and College football league, players and coaches can know if someone have a concussion because of the technology they have at the game. It’s mandatory for every team in college, and in the NFL to have doctors and the technology they have at each game they have.
Blankets are put down at 4 p.m. to reserve a seat. Streets become deserted and restaurants empty just before 7:30 p.m. kickoffs” (B. 12). While football is one of the most loved sports; it is also one of the more dangerous. Many football players will endure bone fractures, ankle sprains, and knee injuries, which are very common; but the injury high school football seems to attract the most is head injuries.Head injuries can have a lasting effect on high school players and tend to be very common. Some people consider the players at fault, while others will blame the helmet manufacturing, coaches, or even the parents. High school players are almost always overlooked and many problems can arise. Therefore coaches, players and parents need to take more responsibility and see that there are solutions to prevent concussions and eliminate such a common problem among high school players.
Football has been around for many decades. There have been all sorts of injuries throughout its existence. As the game evolved with plastic helmets and bigger pads, so did the number of big hits that players were landing. This was exciting for the spectators, watching players give it their all on the field. Players quickly found out that hitting with your head is much more effective than hitting with your shoulder. This new technique brought much more than excitement to the game. It came with concussions. Concussions were never a serious problem until the game evolved. Ever since these injuries came into the game, there has been a push to make the game much safer.
Football head injuries are a big concern in the NFL and youth football, due to the contact in football there's damage that is done to the brain that can cause health issues to individuals players as they get older, it leads to long term mental problems caused by concussions which is when your brain crashes into your your skull. There isn't a technology that can prevent a head injury one hundred percent. Football head injuries are more commonly found in high school than in college and NFL. The effects to the brain of a football player with a head injury are long term in the end.
Hello everyone. I am aware that many of you in this room participate in collegiate sports and many of these facts that I will inform you one you may not like to hear but I feel that it is important for people to know. According to NCAA.org, 10,500 brain injuries have occurred, 3,400 of which have been from football alone. In addition to this, 30% of these have been in females. Brain injuries are extremely hard on the body and can result in life long damage or even death, and it is very important for the student athletes to be aware of these risks and what they can do to prevent them.
“The overall injury rate in NCAA football is 8.1 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures. There were more than 41,000 injuries and 25 million athlete exposures.” There are more than twice the injuries in football than there are in basketball. This will continue to rise if the NFL, NCAA, and all schools around the world don’t take initiative to protect their players. Many people believe that football should be readjusted to where injuries are no more. However, injuries will happen no matter how protected the player is, which is why some people want the sport to be banned for good. In the article “The 5 most dangerous sports for boys”, Lauren Shanley states, “It’s estimated that every year, doctors treat 389,000 musculoskeletal injuries in players ages five to
In America, football is huge entertainment industry and brings in lots of money annually. This doesn’t mean that football is just there for the money, but it provides life long impact for some people. Football is used as a brotherhood or a family, and provides opportunities for kids to learn how to be a teammate. The head coach for J.H. Rose High School, discussed how he loves his team and wants nothing but the best for them (CNN, 2012). In addition, it is a matter of autonomy to be discussed. If a player knows the risks of football, it should be their choice whether they want to play or not. One of the football players in the video said he knows the risks and he’s willing to take them (CNN, 2012). On the other hand, some would argue the principle of beneficence and that doctors are merely trying to save the lives of many young men. In the video, it was discussed that tau proteins become present in the brain after multiple collisions to the head (CNN, 2012). Tau proteins are known to become present in the brain when an older person has Alzheimer’s or dementia (CNN, 2102). Also, is football worth a life, two lives? How many young men have to lose their lives to head trauma caused by football hits, to realize this sport is deadly. Zach Rogers was a teammate and friend of JaQuan Waller, and said how they thought JaQuan was okay and just got hit pretty hard
Here is why. In 2015, the NFL diagnosed 271 players that had concussions. There has continued to be an increase in the number of concussed players over the past several years. With the continual increase in concussions over the years,it is a reasonable question to ask whether the NFL is doing enough to protect their players or not. I am going to start this issue by discussing a movie I am sure you have heard of. Concussion. A Forensic pathologist named Dr. Bennet Omalu was the first doctor to discover chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the brain of former Pittsburgh Steelers' center Mike Webster, who was 50, when he committed suicide. Dr. Omalu made the bold statement that football is the reason that Webster had mental issues, and ultimately the reason for his death. There continued to be a trend of NFL players passing at a young age due to mental health issues, and Omalu was certain that all of it was because of football. He examined the brains of these players and found correlations in their brains that suggests that the repeated blows to the head they received during their career caused severe damage. As you can imagine this discovery was a huge threat to the NFL as people and players saw this evidence and couldn't help but be scared about the outcome football has on an individual. The NFL basically just tried to cover up clear facts stated by Omalu, but eventually it became to evident to ignore. This movie made a large issue in the NFL apparent to many people and creating a film to do so was a very effective platform for displaying it. To make a long story short, since this discovery in 2002, there has been a drastic change in player safety rules, concussion protocol and guidelines, and strictness of teams to follow such protocol and guidelines. In
One of the most dangerous sports to play is football. There are so many risk that come with playing this sport and some people don’t see it. I’ve heared these stories of how players are getting concussions or how this player is on their fifth concussion, but they still come back even though they know what risk it has and how it will affect them in their future. For some the reward of playing outweighs the risk as per T.J. Lang offensive linemen for the Detroit Lions said in an interview with Kyle Meinke from mlive.com “There’s risk in everything you do in life. I don’t think players are immune to the fact that there are a lot of great risks in this game and that’s a choice that a lot of guys have made in the past that they don’t want to do it and you respect it. But for a guy like me, I think the benefits outweigh the risks. Just everything that comes along with being able to be a professional football player, live the lifestyle play at the highest level—it outweighs it, and playing the sport you love” (For T.J. Lang, mlive.com). As mentioned in the quote every professional football player views there injuries differently and some would rather play through it because they love the life of a football player and they wouldn’t give it up for anything.
Football is a rough sport. Many fans of the game watch it for the hard hits. These hard hits and the potential for injury is part of what makes the game so exciting. Some people say that football is too brutal and should be banned. Parents all over the United States don’t allow their children to play because of the risk of head injuries. Others allow their sons, and every now and then their daughters, to play and risk injury for a chance to earn a college scholarship and for a small percentage of players, the chance to play in the National Football League (NFL).
