Thank you for reading through my online portfolio. I have struggled mightily to grasp the concepts of college level writing. I believe that I have made progress in becoming a better writer at the academic level. I hope that you enjoy reading through my papers and I welcome any feedback you might have.
When I write, it was usually to give directions or to welcome a new player and his or her parents to the team that I happened to be coaching. It was very informal, but I tried to make sure that there where no typographical errors and that the formatting was uniform and clean. I believed I was doing a good job and my was writing was effective. Then I enrolled English 101. Through this course, I have been challenged immensely, often to

That is hard for me to say since I never really had much of a style in the past, but I believe I have. I can say that I am more aware of the rules in academic writing, like needing to back up any claims made by citing a credible primary source. I’ve learned that I need to change my words up to emphasize what I want to say.
The strategy that I utilized in the past was to make sure that I formatted my paper in a clean way and that there were no typographical errors. I already knew from working with Microsoft Word over the years that it is not a good tool to rely on to ensure that there are no spelling or grammar errors. In addition, I usually have at least another person proofread the paper for me. Proofreading, I feel, has been the one topic in this course that our teacher has reinforced repeatedly.
My plan on how to improve my writing is simply. I will keep at it, I will not quit, and I will do my best to absorb as much as I can while receiving the most from this experience. I will continue to use the resources provided my teacher. I believe Purdue Owl is a very resourceful site that I have saved because it will help me in future classes in which I may need to write
English has never been my strongest topic nor has the writing process been easy when faced with writer block. This challenge made writing difficult at times in where I was unable to think what should be written next. In this portfolio, I include a variety of pieces in the growth in my abilities of overcoming this challenge as a writer. As I reflect back at the end of the semester on my work in the writing 01 course, I am able to see clearly how much have improved as a writer and display my growth. I have learned about myself in term of weakness and strength and learned from them. In this portfolio , I tried to show the presence of the different style of work I completed and the peer editing of this semester. And how the feedback that I receive
In my childhood I was not taught the fundamentals of proper writing. Nor was it influenced in my household to dedicate time for writing. My father owned his own business, therefore, I always saw him writing inventory and receipts. As for my mother, I can recall her writing down messages from phone calls. At school I found little to no growth in my writing. When I did face a task that required legible writing I would seek help from my friend Sandra. This class is by far the first English course I have taken were I could truly say lectures are broken down enough for me to develop satisfactory growth. I am still a developing writer, but I have made a lot of progress because of influences of my own desire to learn, Professor Anna C. Morrison, and
When writing essays or summaries, I would have to normally revise my papers to make sure that I do not have any mistakes in my grammar or writing style. However this year, I have noticed I have improve in my style and grammar. However, I have not fully understand how to fix my style or how to fully understand grammar in my papers. Over the semester, I gained an awareness of my style that I use in my papers. Normally my papers are full of errors that I do not catch when revising them and I have learned to catch my mistake by printing out my papers and editing them by hand instead of using the computer. When editing my papers it works to read and look at it on paper as I would see mistakes that I would never see on a screen. Through this strategy,
I notice one of the disadvantages with read/write style is not being able to learn due to limited or lack of instruction in visual if there no access to writing materials. An advantage of this style makes a person more self-dependent because of the note taking the process which equal self taught.
As a writer in college, students will be challenged. Unlike high school writing classes, college writing will be more sophisticated and intimate. In high school, most English classes require students to follow the pace of the teacher, however, college writing requires students to work at their own pace. After reading these two articles by Sommers, my thoughts on academic writing has changed. One of Sommers’s students, David, best exemplifies my expectations of a college writer because his attitude towards the class demonstrates how I believe academic writing is challenging. As a student, David went against the grain of the class and “went beyond the texts [Sommers] offered and chose his own.” I believe that college students like David struggle to find or understand information in the given text.
2. Let others revise and read your work, apply what they tell you and review it carefully (King).
As continue my education I have started to overcome some of the fears I have about my writing ability. One such fear is being judged for poor work. By proofreading multiple times as well as submitting my material to the Smartthinking tutors, I can complete assignments with a level of confidence. When I proofread, I am looking through my work to find any spelling, grammar, or mechanical errors (Vandermey, 2012). I also use Grammarly and PaperRater to check my content. Utilizing all of these tools decreases the second fear I have when it comes to my writing knowledge which is fear of failure or poor grades.
Within this portfolio, you will find all of my writing projects. Honestly I couldn’t just choose one because I feel like each one shows my strengths and weakness as a writer. I’m hoping that when you go through my portfolio you can see how I have progressed as a writer this semester. I’m not an amazing writer yet, but I definitely believe that I’m on my way becoming an amazing writer. I’m also I’m including one homework assignment and peer
The contents of this portfolio show the transitions in the revision process as I demonstrate growth. There are four papers I wrote this semester, the original and the revised one that I improved according to the instruction and feedback I received over the course of the semester. From unit one to unit four, there is a significant improve in my writing. With the feedback of each paper, I realized which areas I needed to improve and do better on the next paper. The help from writing lab also made me a better writer, but there still much more I need to improve because I am not a strong writer like my fellow classmates. The portfolio also contains artifacts that I perceive as exemplifying my development as a writer. These are my revision memos of the four papers I wrote and revised, plus a selection from my essay that I believe exemplifies my development as a writer. The last part of the portfolio is the Hupomnemata, which contains my in class writing assignments throughout this semester.
The purpose of this paragraph is to provide an evaluation about the Showcase of Student Writing event that happened last December 5th in which our whole English 120 class participated in. This evaluation letter will also show how we came up with our group’s infographic project and what it meant to us. When we were put in groups and asked to create a PSA Infographic, our group chose to make one about Diversity in America’s film industry. We worked on it for almost three days and got most of our sources from my commentary paper and the rest from other credible sources like one from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Our title was “Welcome to Hollywood, Behind the Glitz and Glamour”. We were able to show that even though
Now that we are near the end of this class my lack of writing skills has come into focus. What I have learned in this class has given me confidence and conquers my feeling of intimidation when it comes to writing. I never enjoyed school and did not put much effort into my prior education. As a result, I have struggled with my writing process throughout the years. I would feel intimidated when the need to express myself in writing was necessary, such as job applications or run reports required in my current job. My lack of effort coupled with an inadequate process has led to more than one embarrassing situation for me. I believe that this course has helped me improve and also taught that putting forth more effort and ongoing education is well worth my time.
Grammar is an important part in writing a paper especially for an English class. When I began English, I was awful with my writing. I generally have good ideas and topics, but did not use them in the correct manner. For instance, I discuss how social norms affect the people in a society. The idea was good, but my thesis was weak and my thesis statement did not elaborate
Although I have made great strides in some areas, there are many aspects of writing that I still struggle with. For instance, I feel that my organization and structure of ideas has much room to improve yet. With that being said, I still believe that I have learned valuable information and techniques that will have me prepared for writing
Business Writing is a type of written communication, usually with standard structure and style. All professionals need to confidently communicate to various audiences in an effective and, when appropriate, influential way. Building on your knowledge of writing basics, including grammar and mechanics, learn to use pre-writing techniques that give your writing clarity and conciseness while meeting the specific needs of the audience. Identify how to create a specific writing style for various types of business correspondence, and practice these techniques by applying them to writing emails, memos, and business letters. Acquire best practices for editing your work, as well as seeking feedback from others to ensure effectiveness. The ability to
This semester in Mrs. Nelson’s class was a very interesting one filled with many interesting and unique assignments. One major assignment for this semester is this Writer’s Portfolio. When I was first told about this “Portfolio” I shrugged it off as it nothing, but I quickly had to come back to reality and get my work done. Creating this portfolio throughout this semester has proved to be a challenge. However, this portfolio has helped me to become a better writer by gaining a few skills along the way.
