The first question asks if the final project aided me in understanding the content of the novel and what was Suzanne Collins purpose behind the book. This final project helped me understand the book by showing all the themes behind the book. I had a main theme, which was sacrifice. It helped me recognize all the things people in the districts sacrificed to Panem. Suzanne Collins had lots of passion behind writing this novel. I believe that Suzanne Collins wrote this book because she wanted to portray the negative aspects of our world through a book. She wanted to show people what we are becoming if we keep following the path we are on. One of the main negative aspects she wrote this book was our obsession with reality television. Reality tv has became a niche for most Americans. We watch other families or game show competitions instead of living our own life. I think that is the main reason Suzanne Collins wrote this book. The second questions asks me, “In regards to the theme you focused on and the connection to the contemporary world, what did you learn about your world and how literature mimics life and life mimics literature?” My theme is sacrifice. I think we should go back to an essay/test format for a few reasons. One, the Hunger Games was just one of the three books we read this semester. If I could tweak the final a little, why not make it where we can just have our final project be one of the books we read this semester instead of the last book we read. An essay/test format could help because then it can show a range of each book we read and test us on that than just one book we read for only about 4 months of the semester. Those are just a few reasons why I think we should go back to an essay/test format or a different type of

I: All throughout grade school and even high school, my teachers, parents, and even friends told me not to take the easy way out when it comes to books. Always read the book before the movie. I usually took the easy way out, watched the movie, and then skim the book. After doing this project I see what everyone was talking about. The book is much better than the movie, it gives you more of a sense of what is going on, a greater sense of when the story takes place, and it gives the characters more definition.

The time that Suzanne Collins lived in when she was writing this book had a heavy effect on the plot of the book. It was from watching tv when the concept of the hunger games came to her. She was surfing the channels and saw a reality tv show where people were competing to stay in the game and a footage from the invasion of Iraq. The two concepts mixed in her mind and led her to the hunger games. She published the book in 2008 which was a time when reality shows, like Survivor, were very popular. If the reader approaches this book thinking of it as a reality tv show, a lot of the same themes arise.
