In The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care (2009), the author of the book, T.R. Reid travels to industrialized democracies to discuss the different methods of health care delivery system used in these developed countries and compare them to the health care system of the United States. According to T.R. Reid (2009), “the thesis of this book is that we can find cost-effective ways to cover every American by borrowing ideas from foreign models of health care” (Reid, 2009, p. 11). This thesis illustrates that the American health care system can manage health care costs effectively and provide care to all by using some of the successful health care delivery models of foreign nations. The purpose of this book analysis is to discuss the four different health care models presented in this book and provide my prioritization or ranking of these models. This analysis also aims to investigate a case known as the Nikki White case described in this book and discuss the lessons learned from it. Furthermore, this analysis is going to provide my remarks on the, “An Apple a Day” comment relative to the Public Health Model. Lastly, in this book analysis, I will share my conclusion on the basic premise of the book along with my take away messages that I will remember into my future as a Public Health professional.

Since 1971 the health care system has deviated from each other. While Canada has had publicly funded national health insurance, the United States has relied largely on private financing and delivery (Goran Ridic). The current health Care act (Canada health act) was introduced in 1984 and it covers almost all the cost of citizens medical cost. In the course of this period, spending in the United States has grown much more rapidly despite large groups that either not covered or minimally insured.
Prior to The ACA, the United States was primarily composed of a private health care system. This meant that employers, families or individuals would buy health insurance through private insurance companies. There were also Medicare and Medicaid government insurance programs for qualifying individuals. (Bradey, 2016) Typically the Medicare program is reserved for those individuals who have reached retirement age and Medicaid is for the poor. There are exceptions to each of the programs that this paper will not explore.

Before thinking about going to the United States, you must know what are the differences between your country and the United States. Colombia is one of
However Brazil has emerged being internationally recognized as a leader of one the best public health systems in the world. The difference between the United States and Brazil comes down to one major factor, it is not how much money you spend on health care, but in fact how you take that money and use it resourcefully. Brazil is very good at promoting and taking care of their citizens. In one interview with a student from Brazil I learned that a lot of citizens of Brazil elect to choose private healthcare if they can afford it. The reason they choose to elect private healthcare is because the public healthcare system has limited resources, for every one doctor there are eight hundred and thirty-three patients compared to the United States where the ratio is one doctor for every four hundred and sixteen patients. Due to the doctor-patient ratio in Brazil the system is very strained with so many patients, there is a long delay in care and advanced treatments. Most people with public healthcare only use the SUS if really needed. The public sector has less money available which unfortunately causes a decline in the quality of care. In one comparison that I read about I found out that people in Brazil pay about seven hundred and sixty-five dollars per year for medical care compared the people in the United State that pay an average of seven thousand two hundred and ninety dollars per year. Ultimately the quality of care is higher for those that can pay or have private healthcare. The United States is the same way the more you are able to pay the better the care you receive and I feel this is a sad truth to our
