Our guest speaker, Colonel Thomas Clark, USMC (Ret.), gave a speech about leadership. Mr.Clark attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina for his undergraduate degree and master’s degree. Mr.Clark obtained his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Mathematics, and his master’s degree in Project Management with a certification in Technical Project Management. He served 30 years in the Marine as a fighter pilot where he obtained a colossal amount of flight time hours. Mr.Clark served in Iraq and many other wars throughout his career. He also loves being a student, solving puzzles, and a christian. On the first day of class, he ran into Dr.Skipper downstairs before class had started; Dr.Skipper told him, “You are my challenge.” …show more content…
He also said, “It is the only tool that loses its effectiveness and overtime can do a great deal of damage.” Secondly, the multibit screwdriver, is a tool that screws in a screw. He used this to allow us to imagine the relationship the screwdriver and the screw should have to work together. Mr.Clark said, “Before you lead people you have to get to know who they are.” In elaboration, this means we need to know peoples’ backgrounds such as their kids, parent’s name, spouse name, what they have going on in their life etc. Thirdly, the leveling is, “Allowing someone in your life to bring you up and down when you are too full of yourself,” says Mr.Clark. To me this is a great tool that all leaders should possess to allow them to remain humble at all time and not let the title that was given to them fill their head up thinking they are too good to listen and hear everyone else’s opinions. Lastly, the survival map, Mr.Clark described as, “Leaders have to know where they are going.” Additionally, he suggested that we all should think about where we want to be five years from now and work backgrounds to achieve that goal.
Given these points, you can see that in order to be a great leader you have to be able to adapt to different circumstances. Overall Mr.Clark delivered a great speech after the midterm that helped clarify how to be a great
The intention of this paper is to introduce my leadership philosophy. I will start off defining leadership as well as explaining my leadership philosophy. “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” John C. Maxwell
In Col J. William DeMarco’s essay, Leadership Philosophy 101: Who Are You?, he states that every leader must have a direction and a personal vision. Col DeMarco calls this concept “Leadership Philosophy,” a concept which resonates through many of the assigned readings. My personal philosophy focuses on servant leadership at its core. Servant leadership is defined as “serving subordinates as much, or more, than they serve their bosses.” Servant leaders don’t stay behind desks, they address the needs of their Airmen, and take care of them like family. The commander interview highlights the critical nature of this leadership method. This paper will compare my personal philosophy with those of my commander and his past leadership crisis
Leadership development in the military is critical to its mission and objectives. Understanding and embracing leadership will foster an agile culture and facilitate attainment of strategic goals. People desire quality leadership to assist with achieving their goals, albeit personal or professional development. Having a clear vision and the motivation to perform at high-levels influences others to work synergistically together to achieve organizational goals. Insomuch, employees value being treated respectfully, fairly, and ethically. Leaders serve people best when they help them develop their own initiative and good judgment, enable them to grow, and help them become better contributors.

"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it." Dwight D. Eisenhower This quote from Eisenhower rings true on many levels. During my career in the military and the private sector, I have been subjected to many different styles of leadership, good or bad. In my leadership roles I have attained, I tried to model leadership abilities by taking bits and pieces of previous leader’s styles and forming them into my own model. This has proven to work well as dealing with people from all different walks of life there is no one size fits all approach. In writing this paper, I will detail my own leadership platform drawing from the course material and various other sources. The goal of this paper is to show a solid understanding of the course teachings and perhaps give the reader a new found perspective on leadership.
As an army chaplain, I see leadership as a responsibility that must be upheld regardless of the situation. That means I should be able to demonstrate a good example of a true leader. I am Joseph Maruska, I am currently a Major in the United States Air Force. This essay will introduce you to my personal command philosophy. It will also summarize and analyze a brief interview recently conducted with a current squadron commander using my own leadership philosophy as a guide. Throughout this essay I will draw upon my own personal experiences and thoughts, lessons discussed throughout the Leadership and Command Course, as well the discussion with a current squadron commander. Leadership and command styles come in many different forms and there is not necessarily a correct or incorrect way to lead depending on your organization or current turn of events. This essay is simply my thoughts after being in the Air Force for the last eleven years.
General Powell highlights 18 lessons learned in leadership that are applied to successful companies, and how they are applied to leadership in his presentation to the Outreach Program, and the Sears Corporate Headquarters. These approaches can be applied not only in business but life in general. I will highlight three of the lessons that have impacted my career in the military
Throughout history our country has had many leaders. Whether you’re the leader of a business, military platoon, or the leader of our great nation you were withheld with the honor and trust to govern the actions and best interests of fellow Americans. But just because you have achieved the title of a leader does not by default make you a good leader. A good leader is a person who has risen above and beyond to show cooperation, perseverance, and respect to decisions made by those still above you at one point in time. “As a seasoned member of the military, you’ve risen through the ranks because you understood your mission and performed your duties with distinction. At this stage of your career, your most important contribution may be how well you take care of the service members and
In today’s world, many people talk about leadership and what distinctive qualities define a leader. I thought back to what events molded me into a leader the most and how it has prepared me for my future at Christopher Newport University and the years ahead.
Since leaders are unique characters, what they’ve acquired and how they implement it to define the future is unique as well. In fact, leaders are made at least by their experience, their understanding as well as application of their experiences as by any skills.
To be a leader in the 21st century is no small feat as we live in an age of technology, political uncertainty, and consistent changes and challenges. Leaders have to be resilient and adaptable. John Maxwell points out many characteristics of a successful leader in the book, “Developing the Leaders Around You, How to Help Others Reach Their Full Potential.” Reading chapter ten begs the question, what will be my contribution to the next generation of leaders?
