The term "colonia," in Spanish means a community or neighborhood. In Texas the Office of the Secretary of State defines a "colonia" as a residential area along the Texas-Mexico border that may not have some or most of the basic living necessities. With that in mind, a colonia means that the citizens may not have things such as potable water and sewer systems, electricity, paved roads, and safe and sanitary housing. Today in Texas, over 1500 colonias in the counties along the Mexican border are home to about 400,000 people. Again, they are often lacking basic services, such as the electricity, water and sewerage, fire protection, policing, schools, and health care, these unstable areas offer the only low-cost housing available to usually and …show more content…

I believe that if the city is able to go in and reconstruct piping for the colonia community then that could and can fix the sewer and water problem. I understand that it takes money for things to take place and it would take an extensive amount of money to fix the colonia’s problems but if this is a must for the sake of the communities then I feel like there should not be any arguments as to why they should not help out. When it comes to the housing as well, I personally think that the people who live in the colonia communities feel like the more upscale citizens do not care about them. In some cases that may be true but not all people are mean and cruel and I feel like the counties should set up communities dates so that way we can volunteer to help out with reconstructing and making their homes and surrounding environments a better place for them. The colonias are unfortunately dirty, and dysfunctional areas to live in and a lot of action needs to be taken into consideration if things are going to change in those areas and I feel like the state should step up a bit more and try to do a bit more for the people who live
