Not often in the United States today is it heard of two people in a relationship that crosses boundaries marrying for political or pragmatic interests. Instead, marriage and love are commonly viewed in the United States to be focused on love, sexuality, and compassion. However from the viewing and analysis of The Tempest, Prospero’s Books, How Tasty was my Little Frenchman, and America Before Columbus, the concept of colonial love or “love myth”, ties together to create the idea of this sort of political, pragmatic interest in colonial love. In The Tempest, colonial love can be found between the relationship of Prospero and Ariel by the way in which the two converse, specifically the scene where Ariel asks for freedom. Although Prospero continues assigning Ariel’s tasks and asking for favors, Ariel continues to be obedient of Prospero and fulfill his requests all the same. The colonial love between the two was that of exploitation and oppression, as Prospero used and extracted Caliban of his value. This is specifically shown in the scene where Prospero calls upon Caliban and speaks to him in the lagoon. This extraction of value is portrayed in the way that Prospero speaks to Caliban. It is also shown when Prospero mentions Caliban’s constrained servitude. Prospero extracts this servitude because of the colonizer- type love Prospero holds, and because he feels Caliban is indebted to him as the colonized. Caliban feels as if he must obey not only because of his attempted rape of Miranda, but also because the power of Prospero. This scene best portrays the colonizer- colonized relationship by Prospero’s explanation of why Caliban must serve him, and the way this colonized love plays a role in Caliban accepting such
