Columbine Shootings And Its Impact On School Security

Introduction Tuesday April 20th, 1999 began like any other day. Parents went to work, and the children went off to school. Neither worried about the other, or how their day would turn out. But, hours later everything changed (“Columbine Highschool Massacre.”). Little did the residents of Columbine, Colorado know their high school would be a statistic for one of the largest school massacres in US History. On this day, two teenage boys were responsible for killing 12 innocent students and a teacher, wounding 23 more students, and then killing themselves (Miller). By this time Klebold and Harris had both taken their life and at least 75 police officers were surrounding Columbine High School. About two hours later, the SWAT team entered the east side of the building finding injured victims waiting for assistance. Teacher David Sanders was shot and had been bleeding for three hours before getting help (Kohn). “Sanders was the last of 15 people to die at Columbine that day. Twenty-three wounded were taken to hospitals. Six had brain or spinal injuries. Several nearly bled to death. Doctors at six hospitals worked on wounded children all through the night, and saved every one of them.” (Kohn). The security during the massacre at Columbine High School was minimal. Senator Dianne Feinstein said “There were two armed law enforcement officers at that campus, and you see what happened. Fifteen dead ... 23 wounded.” There was one officer at Columbine who was a 15-year veteran of the Jefferson County, Colorado with the name of Deputy Neil Gardner and another officer, Deputy Paul Smoked, who was a patrolman, both whom were armed. This is where the debate on how to protect schools began (Terkel). “The governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, said he doesn’t think that having armed police officers at a school will make it safer or encourage learning.
