Martin Luther King Jr once said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character.” When people judge others by how they look or their skin color they lose the opportunity to learn from that specific person. Everyone has different personalities and has the ability to do many things. We need to stop racism by making changes within ourselves. In order to combat racism, I must help others no matter what they look like or what the situation is. For example, if you are in a classroom setting on the first day of school you shouldn’t judge the kids in your class by what they look like. When the teacher asks to go find a partner, you should talk to anyone instead of picking and choosing who you think you would like. Furthermore, in my personal situation, I have not talked to someone because I didn’t really know them or I didn’t think they looked like someone I would get along with. I should have stood up and not excluded the person in the activities we do in class. Being the bigger person in odd situations can benefit both you and other people. …show more content…
For example, people with a different skin tone or a disability have the power to do so many different things. Some people look at the people with disabilities and think, they can’t do things I do so why let them do things. The people with disabilities are capable to do so many things that maybe we can’t do it. Also, when you see someone struggling on a project or assignment you can go over an help them. Some people feel left out because they are not helped or they are not asked to come into another group. Including others in different things can have a major impact on both you and
In one way or another everyone encounters racism at many times in their life. Whether they are making the comments or victims of it, racism is everywhere and continues to be denied throughout the world. Neil Bissoondath, a Trinidad native, writes "I'm Not Racist But " which discusses the types of labels given to different ethnic groups and the encouragement of racism they give. Based on the effective way it was written, Bissoondath's essay is suggested for an English 101 text.
There exists in our community a monster, a monster as old as mankind itself. This monster is known by many names; some call it racism, others discrimination but the only thing certain about this monstrosity is that it can be overcome if we all unite to fight against it. Racism is “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race” (Merriam Webster). Racism has multiple causes ranging from living in a secluded community, to the basic instincts of mankind which likes exemplify the differences found in others not like themselves. Racism can destroy the foundations on which a community is laid upon and can intrude upon the peace and sanction of many of its members. By informing members of the community on the reasons why racism continues to persist, encouraging acceptance and providing further education on how to relieve racial tensions, we can resolve the issue of racism once and for all.
If one were to drive down any random road in South Carolina today, they might spot a Confederate Flag hanging proudly from a building or a house or even a national monument. The ones who support the display of this flag say that it is more to do with cultural history than racism, however, the history that this flag represents is what motivated Dylann Roof to kill nine innocent people in a South Carolina church in 2015. In this day and age, how did something like the Charleston church shooting massacre occur? This essay will explain how racism, although not as common as it was in the past, still exists today and how this racism is connected to the story of Dylann Roof. Although certain racist laws, such as Jim
The clear message for fighting racism is a plain lesson we first learn in elementary schools and in our own individual families, treat everyone as your own and as your equal. Racism is not an external occurrence it is hate behavior that is taught and widely accepted today. To fight racism, we should look to the person in front of us, behind us, to the right and to left every time as equals and as a
“I do believe that part of us ending racism is us seeing each others humanity and learning to love each other even if we look different or worship different or live differently.”-John Legend. Racism, prejudice and anti-Semitism can have such a strong and hurtful thing that we as a nation need to stop. We all need to help as individuals, as groups, and as a nation. You need to not follow others and have your own thought on things. We can work together to raise awareness on-line, and raise awareness on the streets. This is our job.We must stop it together. We can not do it without everyone's help.
To be able to move forward as a nation to promote a world of racial equality we must take the lead as social workers in advocacy and education. One of the things we can do is acknowledge that racism still exists today. For many, racism has become so normalized in our society that people are not even aware that it is taking place. Politicians in the media question if racism exists and feel that because it is not as salient as it has been in the past that it is no longer an issue. If we pretend it isn't there it is not just going to disappear. Bias and stereotypes are taught and learned from an early age. We need to model language and behaviors that teach acceptance and tolerance to our children. Making this a part of a child's education in school is something that will last them a life time. Stereotypes teach hate, and we cannot afford to teach the next generation to be hateful but instead to be accepting. Also, as social workers we need to be aware of our own privilege and how this can impact how we work with others. We all grew up with prejudice and bias in our lives and it is our job to acknowledge this and reflect upon it, so we can work more effectively with
When white Americans choose to self-educate about systemic racism they can become allies in the fight to dismantle racist structures in our society. “Structural racism is the silent opportunity killer. It is the blind interaction between institutions, policies, and practices that inevitably perpetuates barriers to opportunities and racial disparities.” (Grantmakers 2009). This includes discrimination affecting credit, schooling, justice, residential location, etc. It can be eradicated in the next century, but not without white people acknowledging that it is a real issue that cost lives. It is not the duty of the oppressed to make a liberty sales pitch to their oppressors. However, it is the responsibility of those benefiting
One situation that needs to happen to stop racism is to compose that everyone else is treated equally( I have dream) . One element that will occur if we are all treated the same is the African Americans can’t gain madness over what is said to them. When we are talking to them, we won’t be talking meanly but we will be talking nicely also they will be shocked about how nice we are being towards them. Another concept is our actions won’t build down their self-esteem, we won’t laugh and produce disgusted faces at them. They won’t be offended when we run into them when we are out running errands. The next element that will happen if we were treated equally is they won’t
Although many experts disagree on what to do about racism, it has been a huge problem in America for many years. What exactly is racism? Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. Racism is still alive and well in 2017, if anything, it's worse now than it has been in a while. While there has been many attempts to prevent racism, many people just can’t seem to get along with others simply because of their skin color. Will we ever be able to live in a world where everyone is treated the same no matter where they were born or what their skin color is? We have the power to change this but first, we must all unite and love each other equally.
“Racism springs from the lie that certain human beings are less than fully human. It's a self-centered falsehood that corrupts our minds into believing we are right to treat others as we would not want to be treated” (Alveda King). Racism has been part of our daily lives for a very long time. From 1865 when slavery was abolished to 2017 where doctors are being told to go back to India, it hasn’t gone away. It has however improved but not enough to where people can feel like a human. As time has gone on, more and more people have learned to accept people who are different from them but there are still so much more people who haven’t. That needs to change if we want to live in a world where people aren’t afraid to walk outside without being treated
Racial injustice is one of the most pressing issues of our time. Recent publicized events have caused national outcry of the police brutality that African-American’s face everyday. In fact, in the black community, “the talk” is more about how to handle yourself when approached by a police officer then about the birds and the bees. Stereotypes about people of color keep them from equal education, employment, and fair treatment when simply shopping in a grocery store. Furthermore, people assume if you are not following the stereotype then you are not “black enough”. Growing up I was a product of this “not black enough” stigma. At my all black middle school I was mimicked and called an “Oreo” because of my ability to speak proper english. On the
If I could change one thing about the world I would abolish racism. I believe that everyone should be treated equally and have equal opportunities achieving their goals and persuing their dreams. I foresee that the world is becoming less and less racist but it is still a serious problem especially in North America with police brutality within minority groups. Minority groups are 3x more likely to be killed by a police officer compared to the majority in the United States and only about 28% of the United States' population consists of minority groups. So the facts don't really add up when minorities are way more likely to be killed by a police officer and minorities make up a small precent of the population.
Racism is one of the world’s biggest concerns; it is still strong in this generation. So much chaos is coming about from racism in our lives today. Stories on the news are explaining how severe racism is. Even schools still have issues with racism; students aren’t friends and are more like enemies. I believe with the turmoil we are in today, it will take large amounts of effort to make this world great again. People of all skin colors, personalities, and backgrounds should come together to build and accomplish great things.
My belief on the way to end racism is this, I believe that the best way to end racism is to have every person that's racist, to become friends with someone with the race they don't like.
We can do this by treating people the same. Treating people the same in my mind one of the greatest ways to stop racism. For instance, in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry T.j was pushed, shoved, and beaten. He was not treated the same because of his color, you wouldn’t see white people acting that way to other white people. Another way is to not judge people by their color. We shouldn’t judge someone by the color of their skin, it's just so, so rude.
