In this chapter, we can see how Harper Lee can show how much the characters were impacted by the change in setting. The Finch children come of age throughout the novel. They learn life lessons through their father, Atticus, as well as through experiences in their town. Scout and Jem learn from their father to not let your boundaries define you. In chapter 15 we are able to see how Atticus attempts to help calm Jem down by explaining, “No, we don’t have mobs and that nonsense in Maycomb.”( Lee 167). Atticus was trying to show Jem that things are changing. Another example is when Aunt Alexandria was bickering with Atticus and had, “almost said Atticus was disgracin’ the family.”( Lee 167). She called him a disgrace for not following what they were being taught as children, which was that colored people were not good people. Lastly, we get a peek at what the people in town thought about Atticus when he was told, “You’ve got everything to lose from this, Atticus”( Lee 166). The children are listening to these conversations and these and the points that really bother the children and pause their development so they can …show more content…
The way they spoke and interacted with one another played a significant role in shaping their individual traits and overall development throughout the story. One of the most effective ways for characters to truly develop and grow is through interaction with others, whether it be through teaching or simply having conversations. By listening to others and learning from their experiences, characters can gain new perspectives and insights that help them evolve. This can lead to more complex and dynamic characters that can navigate challenges and conflicts in unique and interesting ways. So, if you want to create truly memorable and impactful characters, it's important to focus on how they interact with others throughout their journey. This shows incredible growth in character development. In this chapter Mr. Underwood said, “Your damn tootin’ they won’t. Have you covered all the time, Atticus” (Lee 175). This quote that was shared between Mr. Underwood and Atticus Finch helps the children see how some people who have different ideas and opinions stay open minded and no matter what, always do what is right. Another example is when Scout tried one of the lessons her father had taught her to always feel empathy for others when she expressed, “Entailments are bad”( Lee 174). She had seen how these entailments had put a force on Mr.
1) Atticus is an empathetic person who tries to make sure people are treated equally, and in the case of his children, that people should grow up and make a positive difference. Atticus shows his empathy by telling Scout to try to understand what Miss Caroline is going through. Harper Lee is trying to show that with empathy, everyone benefits, and there would be less hate and injustice. Atticus says, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 39). Atticus is telling Scout to look at the world through Miss Caroline’s eyes, to see why Miss Caroline reacts the way that she does. Atticus believes that if Scout can see how scared Miss Caroline is, with teaching a new school in a new way, then Scout can understand what makes Miss Caroline act the way that she does. When Scout asks Atticus why he is angering the town by defending Tom Robinson, he says that he must, or else he would no longer be reputable. Atticus says, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (Lee 101) Atticus leads by example, and that if he did not hold himself to the same standard that he wants Scout and Jem to be at, then he is no better than the rest of the town. He knows that he is going to lose, but wants to show his children that it is important to do the right thing no matter the consequences or result, and

Throughout the novel, the Finches face many challenges with how the town views them because of Atticus’ opinion to defend Tom Robinson in court. Multiple neighbors and townspeople choose to use racial slurs and speak badly of Atticus. Jem and Scout become accustomed to the way the town treats them, but Atticus remains strong and explains to them why it is happening. Atticus teaches his children about equality, about respecting others despite their colors or backgrounds, and how to stay positive throughout hard times. During Tom Robinson’s trial, Atticus calmly asks Mayella for information about the incident.

If society was asked what defines “coming of age,” what would it say? Some would say people come of age when they act more mature, think grown up thoughts, or do certain actions. This quote by someone unknown helps form an explanation of what coming of age is: “Maturity doesn’t mean age; it means sensitivity, manners, and how you react.” In the literature piece “The First Part Last,” the author Angela Johnson writes about two teenagers, Bobby and Nia, who struggle with the difficulties of teen pregnancy. Throughout the book, they both face many hardships that put their relationship, patience, and responsibility to the test. With the help of a red balloon, a basketball, and family pictures in a doctor’s office, Bobby comes of age after paying attention to these symbols and signs throughout the novel.
The classic modern American literature novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by author Harper Lee depicts the lives of main characters; Jeremy “Jem” , Jean Louise “Scout”, their father Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson and many more. In this novel, Harper Lee showcases a numerous amount of coming-of-age scenes that demonstrate how the characters are able to grow and evolve as the story continues. One significant coming-of-age scene that the author delineates is the courtroom scene. In this scene Mayella Ewell, daughter of Bob Ewell goes to court against the defendant, Tom Robinson who is accused of “raping” Mayella. Atticus is appointed by the judge to be Tom’s lawyer. In this case, Atticus exhibits logical, emotional and ethical references that bolster Tom. However, the outcome of Atticus’ work prove to be futile. Scout, Jem and Atticus exhibit their coming of age in the courtroom scene of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view”. This quote was said by Harper Lee a writer of serval book include To Kill A Mockingbird. In Chapter 12 of Lee’s Southern Gothic novel To Kill A Mockingbird the protagonist Scout and Jem come of age from learning and understanding other point of views and by influential characters. In this section of the book Calpurnia takes them to her church and here is when they have a significant coming of age experience.
Throughout the work, Lee uses Atticus, the children 's’ father, as a device to communicate the message that children often learn the most important lessons outside of school. This becomes particularly evident in Chapter Three when Atticus makes a special deal with Scout after her teacher, Miss Caroline, tells her that she is not allowed to read with him at home
The Finch family is hopeful. Atticus has brought his children up by his values. The children, Jem and Scout, are taught to hope, by their father, Atticus. Both are impacted form the work Atticus has done, he has defended an African American. Jem learns from Atticus to never lose hope, and he does not lose hope throughout the novel. The children also show that there is hope in the future for people to be nonjudgmental. They did not understand how a jury could convict a man whom they knew was innocent and this was astonishing for them. Atticus explains to Jem that it has happened before and will happen again, sadly he also told them,"... when they do it - it seems that only the children weep...” (Lee, pg 232). Atticus is the wise one; he explains the problem to the children. He tells them that injustice will always happen. Atticus tells the children that bad things happen in the world, but only children find it hard to understand. The message of hope carries on in the book, is that despite her debut into the adult world, she avoids absorbing the prejudices of the community around her. Scout becomes our hope for a more tolerant future. However all hope is not lost in the end. As Scout realises that Boo is no one to dread and the two become friends, so too do we realise that the town can likewise learn to shed its bigotry and embrace its subject of unfound malice. Jem and Scout learnt that hope is always there, from there father, Atticus in the novel, To
How are you affected by coming of age? Coming of age can be roughly described as a changing point in your life. How does experiencing love and finding identity affect your life? An example of finding identity is in the book Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger. I am a salinger.
I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee and I am on page 176. This book is about the Finch family who live in Maycomb, Alabama. Jem is beginning to become more mature and is spending less and less time with Scout. Scout on the other hand is as inquisitive as ever. But when their Aunt Alexandra comes to stay for a while, they find her trying to change the way they behave and even trying to get rid of Calpurnia, their beloved housekeeper.
As Jem stands up against his father, it shows him beginning to change from a child into something more.
There have been over 40 million copies of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee sold worldwide. Not only that, but the novel is also one of the most taught novels in North America, precisely in the United States. This book by Harper Lee is excellent in demonstrating the development of characters through out their changing attitudes and interactions with other characters. The author, utilizes a character by the name of Atticus Finch to show these changes in other characters, most notably are his children Jem and Scout. Atticus has a vast knowledge of Maycomb county and its inhabitants, and the way they behave with one another.
“When we are children, we seldom think of the future. The innocence leaves us free to enjoy ourselves as few adults can. The day we fret about our future is the day we leave our childhood behind” - Patrick Rothfuss. Angela Johnson if the author of the novel The First Part Last. The main theme of the novel is coming of age. The main character, Bobby, is the one who is coming of age. But I don’t think he came of age by the end of the novel and evidence showing this isthe symbols. The symbols are the tears, the food, and the basketball.
