Commentary On 'Thinking Up A Storm'

Leaders are an essential part of a group project. They should keep everyone on task and focused, they should keep people from having arguments, and they should help correct mistakes if there are any made. Groups leaders have to be persistent but willing to compromise when agreeing on a plan.Group leaders should, also, encourage individuality in a group, so the group can get the best results. As a group leader, people should make decisions that benefit the entirety of the group. Group leaders can encourage creativity by encouraging other group members to share their ideas. As said in the passage, The Teamwork Trap, “Another cause of groupthink is when people feel they will be criticized for their opinions.” (Paragraph 2) A way to solve this issue is to encourage members of the group to share idea regardless, and encourage them to speak. In the passage Thinking up a Storm, it states, “, set the tone by reminding people not to criticize anyone’s ideas so that no one feels uncomfortable giving wild ideas.” (Paragraph 3) If people think that they will be criticized for their ideas, they may not share it, even though it …show more content…

Leaders should, next, set a comfortable environment so their group members feel more comfortable when sharing ideas. The consequences of not speaking up could be tremendous. In the passage The Teamwork Trap, it mentions, “One example occurred in 1986 when the Challenger space shuttle exploded before ever making it out of Earth’s atmosphere. It was revealed later that a few members of the group who designed the shuttle knew that few parts were not quite right. Due to a groupthink mentality, none of them spoke up before the shuttle launched.” (Paragraph 3) This quote shows that some people are afraid to speak about some flaws that a plan has because the group agrees that the plan is perfect.
