Commercialization of education

The Commercialization of education has been a fairly recent trend in India that stems from the educational reform in the country over the last two decades. It mainly materializes itself in mushrooming private schools, public and private universities and at the high education level. In a sense, it has added a financial element to the qualifications of attending private schools and public and private universities. Undoubtedly, it affects millions of families. As a result, it also changes the traditional concepts of education in Indian society, including the student-teacher relationship, education, and the attitude towards gaining knowledge. As it is very difficult to meet the democratic aspirations of the people for further expansion of educational system due to paucity of resources it is therefore, being felt that the private sector is inducted in education so that it car share the burdens of the state in funding education.
Development of Thought:
In India, the commercialization of education has been taking place at the school level without much resistance. But it has not made much dent into other levels. However commercialization, though necessary has some drawbacks. Private education trusts often become merely profit making business ventures with no social ideals or objectives.
If commercialisation of education comes into conflict with the equity objective, state intervention would be desirable. It is necessary that state intervention be increased in private sector institutions to increase the quota of seats to the poor and deprived sections and help in promoting human resources development to keep pace with the emerging requirements.
It is important to see that a thorough change is attempted without merely making cosmetic changes. Only then can our education system be revamped in the desired direction.
