While it is plausible that one of the goals of the Committee of Public Safety was to protect the revolution from its enemies, an analysis of the surrounding historical context and the seemingly reform driven proclamations made by the C.O.P.S. strongly suggest that the main goal was to essentially protect the revolution through radicalization. When considering the surrounding historical context of the implementation of the C.O.P.S., it is clear to see that there has always been an inclination towards radicalization. By definition, to radicalize means to drastically change and it was clear that this was what the Jacobins intended to do to French society. The Jacobins, being radicals themselves, wanted to change the status quo of French society.
