As mentioned in my Common App essay, Orange Lutheran was an extremely toxic environment for anyone who did not meet the criteria of being a white, straight, middle to upper-class male. We were in a college seminar and a teacher asked students to raise their hands if they wanted to go to Stanford, the teacher then proceeded to say “all of you put your hands down except ‘Adam’, because he is the only bi-racial person, so he is the only one with a chance.” While this may or may not have some truth behind it, it was extremely unfair to number one single out someone of a different racial background, and number two discount any student’s ability or talent because of their race. This, unfortunately, is only one example of the issues that people are
In the reading “At the Elite Colleges” by Peter Schmidt the nature of admissions in top colleges was discussed in relation to class and race status. Schmidt states that affirmative action is often serving white populations of upper middle class females rather than those in minority races and ethnicities. This was a great relevant point, especially when considering why affirmative action was proposed and enacted in the first place. Affirmative action was created to serve those who are part of groups who had been quashed in some way by oppression. This stands in stark contrast. Colleges often make excuses for these undeserved admissions because, they are looking for future donors or are aiding an athlete. However, this is still inexcusable. On
TUSCARORA, N.Y. (WENY) - The man accused of shooting at two Steuben County Sheriff Deputies last week, appeared in the Town of Bath Court Wednesday afternoon.
Esteemed teacher at Elk Grove High School was arrested Thursday morning. Two Elk Grove police officers barged in on her first class of the day not only to find that she had controlled substances on her, but she also tried planting them on a student in said class.
Many families encounter the worst of sports related injuries, such as being paralyzed or even death upon playing. The NCHSAA should be more cautious upon high school athletics and make it a safer environment towards all contenders within the divisions. It is not the NCHSAA fault upon injuries, but they can make the biggest improvement upon sports to try and prevent many risky injuries. Kids will go through the pain of an injury, not to only sit and get ready to play again, but to learn an important lesson.
Trinity has been given a startling assignment: she has to seduce as many of the ruling Council of Audax-3 as she can. She doesn't intend to start an orgy in the Council room, but sometimes these things just happen. Will she be able to handle the heat?
Everybody at least wants to go somewhere new in their lifetime. Perhaps it’s to visit family or maybe it’s to get away from the same old, same old, I’ll admit Indiana is pretty boring. Anyways, I’ve always wanted to go to Oregon, mainly because of the weather. Like every state, Oregon has it’s advantages and disadvantages. I’ve always adored Oregon for some reason and have always fantasized of living there, even if I don’t live there, a vacation to Oregon would still be suffice.
In the beginning of the 20th century Texas discovered a major economic game changer. In January of 1901 in Spindletop, Texas oil was discovered in the form of a 100-foot geyser. Little did Texans know that their lives and economic situation would be changed forever. Right after the discovery most of the early profits made from oil went to easterners. When the 1920’s came around oil became a major economic engine. Causing major social changes in job opportunities, education, marriage, and sports.
Stanford students David Sacks and Peter Thiel describe how, “rather than fostering harmony and integration, preferences have divided the campus… if preferences were truly meant to remedy disadvantage, they would be given on the basis of disadvantage, not on the basis of race.” The bias present in Affirmative Action does not mend what it was originally put in place to fix, discrimination of the disadvantaged. Instead, it misplaces students who are qualified. The unfavorable system of preferential admission disregards a more promising system of admittance.
Racial diversity is something that is often discussed on college campuses. As a student who self-identifies as a minority in more ways than one I often feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the subject of racism and race. However, often times when these issue are discussed I learn something new; this was the case when reading the articles this week. This week’s articles examined the issue of race from different perspectives. This allowed me to re-examine the issue in a fuller manner; it also allowed me to question some of my own notions that I hadn’t really challenged before.
Attending community college before completing your bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution can save you a sizable chunk of change. Tuition and fees at public community colleges average less than half of those at public four-year colleges and about one-tenth of those at private four-year colleges, according to the American Association of Community Colleges. “I think my student loan was at least half of what I would have paid otherwise,” O’Brien says.
American society likes to believe that race relations in our country are no longer strained. We do not want to hear about the need for affirmative action or about the growing numbers of white supremacist groups. In order to appease our collective conscious, we put aside the disturbing fact that racism is alive and well in the great U.S.A. It hides in the workplace, it subtly shows its ugly face in the media, and it affects the education of minority students nationwide. In the following excerpts from an interview with a middle class African American male, the reader will find strong evidence that race plays a major role in determining the type and quality of education a student receives.
Even though we have or carry certain traits of the privileged, we also carry those of the oppressed group, which consist of being a female, person of color, gay, or being of the poor or working class. Being a person of color in today’s society you are faced with some challenges and difficulties, especially as an African American. Now, being a person of color as well as a homosexual, poses even more difficulty in various aspects that are worse than being heterosexual. Despite the controversial assumptions surrounding the homosexual community, homosexuals are reported to have higher rates of finishing their college
Many of my life experiences have given me a glimpse of what it means to be in the margins of society. My family’s history of racism and poverty, my father’s physical disability, my experiences as a woman, and growing up in the diverse Bay Area with friends, mentors, coaches, and teachers from different backgrounds has opened my eyes to the disparities in society. When I was sixteen I had a particularly salient experience that awoke my heart and mind to the ideas of social justice. I was in Memphis, Tennessee for a basketball tournament and on our day off we went to the Civil Rights Museum, which was built around the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. We saw the counters from sit-ins, buses from the Freedom Ride, and learned about the systematic oppression of Jim Crow. I was confused by the hate and anger I saw but found myself clenching my fists with rage at the injustice of it all. Yet, what was even more powerful was sitting in the parking lot with my team and listening to our assistant coach, who was an African-American man, share his experiences of racism, how it shaped his identity, and his fears for his two sons. Our head coach then shared about her experiences as lesbian and the ways in which she was continually denied rights because of her sexual orientation.
