I. Research Question

It is common knowledge that fruit is a healthy food choice. Parents prefer that their children reach for a sweet fruit instead of other snacks. While fruit may be full of vitamins and fiber for our bodies, some are very acidic. This acid can damage our teeth by eating away at the protective enamel. Personally, I eat fruit with every meal and for snacks and sometimes dessert. In eating all this fruit, I can be doing something really healthy for my body but may be hurting my teeth. This experiment will test the pH level of everyday fruits after being chewed, to study how the pH levels are affected by saliva. When chewed, which fruit has the lowest pH or is the most acidic?

For instance, the pH value 2 is ten times more acidic than the pH value 3 and is “100 times (10 x 10) more acidic than” the pH value 4 (Ophardt). When reading alkaline solutions (numbers 8-14), each pH value is 10 times more alkaline than the prior lower value. For example, pH 12 is 10 times more alkaline than pH 11 and is 100 times more alkaline than pH 10.
C. Characteristics of Acids and Bases To better understand pH levels, it is essential to know the differences between an acid and a base or alkaline and what makes a food acidic or basic. Acids “taste sour, have a pH of less than 7, and will turn a pH strip red” (Science Geek). A neutral substance does not contain any of the characteristics of an acid or a base. It does not change the color of the pH strip and has a measurement close to a 7 on a digital pH meter. Alkaline foods “taste bitter, have a pH greater than 7, and will turn a pH strip blue” (Science Geek).
D. Mixing Solutions with Different pH Levels
Mixing a neutral solution with a basic or acidic solution can make it more neutral or neutralize it. For example, mixing a neutral liquid, such as water, with an acidic liquid, such as lemon juice, will increase the pH of the juice (making it less acidic).
