Communications and Culture 301 has taught me many valuable things that I believe will stick with me. Growing up in a non-religious family I found it very hard to learn about other cultures and beliefs beyond the dominant Western faith of Christianity and Catholicism. By taking CMCL I have been able to greatly expand my views and interpretations to several different cultures. From what I have observed this year specifically through working with my group on our final project, is a common theme of ones continual need of proof. Although this theme can be applied to almost any of the stories, I found this theme to be the most prevalent in the readings specifically in Spartan society and The Bhagavad Gita. The constant need to prove has followed our society from the thousands of years ago in which these stories take place to affect us today in our modern day beliefs the same way that they affected those who lived during these stories. Proof can be seen in several different aspects of the readings. Spartan society focuses more specifically on proof to society rather than proof of worship, like the Bhagavad Gita does. The Spartan citizens were continually expected to prove to the society of their strength and courage for the state. This could be seen through things such as contests where Spartans would compete against other women and men to display their bodily strength to the community, thus proving that they where strong enough to render healthy children (Xenophon, page162).
