Second it is important to meet with the child's teachers, tutors, and school support personnel to understand performance levels, and attitude toward school. Special education services are provided to student to work with a team of professionals, including your child's teacher, to develop an Individualized Education Program. The individualized education program is created to provide a summary of child’s current education and future goals within education. More recently it is thought that a student with learning disability could show one of more than 500,000 combinations of cognitive or socioemotional problems (Heward, 2010). Learning disabilities cause students to struggle with so many things in school such as academics, emotions, and socializing and learning disabilities also cause students to have problems away from school. Students with learning disabilities may experience problems with learning to read or comprehend what they read, learning to do math or develop mathematical reasoning, learning vocabulary, spelling or the written language, and learning to get along with others and exhibit appropriate social skills. They may also have problems with paying attention, hyperactivity, and sometimes behavior,

Different disabilities may affect development in different ways. However, with support from teachers and parents, these affects can be minimalised. A learning disability such as Dyslexia (a common type of learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling) could lead to a child becoming frustrated which could further lead to behavioural issues. One challenge an individual may face is communication problems, so as we get older we start to lose our eyesight and our hearing weakens, we will become much more hesitant when we talk. Other things can affect the way we can communicate e.g. Maria’s mother has dementia and is a 1st generation immigrant from Italy, therefore she can only speak Italian; and has forgotten how to speak English. This will make it hard for her mother to communicate with service providers if she’s placed in a nursing home, as they will not be able to understand what she’s saying; which will be a problem as there may be aspects about her mother that needs to be vitally known. Furthermore, her mother will have a hard time negotiating with her support workers that’ll come help during the night.

Before planning how to support a student with severe and profound disabilities in my classroom, I need to first educate myself about the student and his/her disability. Without the knowledge about whom the students are and their needs that are needed to accomplish their goal is impossible to support the students. Once I am able to learn about my students, I will then start to plan different support to help the students achieve their potential as much as possible.

The accommodations Andrea made in her classroom for special needs students include seating them close to the teacher’s desk, more time for tests and homework, extra help with homework, work with a paraprofessional, give a handout of notes, use of notes on tests, and shortening assignments. All of these techniques seem like proper accommodations to make for students who have disabilities. In addition to these techniques, Andrea emphasized a few methods that she had experienced the most success with. The first of these methods was station-learning. She explained that

According to David “an expressive disorder is usually identified earlier because the spoken language may be noticeable late or difficult to understand. Language delay is when a child is developing in the correct sequence but later than their age typical peers” or can be labeled as late talkers. Children that cannot communicate or express themselves properly often find it hard perform well in school and form relationships because of their speech, language and communication difficulties. Poor communication skills are often overlooked by parents since most of the interactions between parents and children, if any, take place in an informal setting. Parents are happy when children come home with good grades in science based subjects but don’t really put a lot of emphasis on language skills. This means that the effects of poor communication skills are often noticed later in life when children begin to interact with formal settings that require formal communications.

It is estimated that over 10 percent of people internationally are affected by a learning disability (Gale 1). 12 million American children suffer from one. That would be about three people in an average classroom. Over 60 percent of those suffering from learning disabilities are males (Lockley 1). When it comes to learning communication plays a major role due to the fact that it allows children to participate in active and interactive communication with classmates and school personnel, which facilitate the learning process. Communication disorders consist of various problems in hearing, speech, and language. As we all know, speech and language can impact children in many ways such as how they talk, gain understanding, evaluate, and process information. Children with communication disorders usually do poorly in school. They repeatedly struggle to read, they have problems expressing and understanding language and social cues. They may demonstrate poor judgment, have trouble with tests taking, and also may sometimes refuse to go to school.
