Communication amongst human beings has always been vital for survival. Anymore, communication is vital for success and living a normal life. If one lacks the ability to communicate, it can be an extreme challenge to live a normal life. Males and females often communicate differently and sometimes can communicate the same. “Differences between ‘gender cultures’ influence the way that people of different genders communicate. The first issue that will be discussed is the fact that “women feel left out during conversations” (Evans). These conversations that women feel left out in are debates at work, regular conversations, and decision making conversations. Women like to be invited into conversations because they feel more accepted if someone else shows sympathy toward the female’s opinion or view. Females tend to keep quiet during debates between men because of the fact that they want to be invited in. Many men don’t feel the need to invite the female in because she isn’t speaking and they feel as if the female has nothing to say. It isn’t hard to see the miscommunication in this situation. They both are picking up false messages and are drawing logical conclusions based on the information that they are given. I have experienced this in the work place myself. I work in at a male dominant cement plant that contains very few females. Most of these females don’t seem to fit in with the rest of the guys when it comes to simple conversation and debate. The women tend to keep quiet more than the men do. Another difference between genders at work is “men think that women ask too many questions” (Evans). Some men think that these questions asked by women inhibit progress and take too much time. Many women claim that asking questions is their best way to contribute. Deborah Tannen and William Lutz both discuss the difficulty of communicating. Their point of views may be different, but their conclusion is the same. Men and women have difficulties of communicating. Not because the two genders want to be complicated but simply because we don’t realize how or what we’re doing when it’s happening.
Effective communication is paramount when developing positive relationships with everyone we come across, whether it is a child, young person or adult. For children and young people it is very important that we use effective communication to help them learn and grow, the way we talk to children and young people and what we do with the information we gain from listening to their needs will have a huge impact on their learning experience. A concluding thing that was found useful in Deborah Tannen’s essay was she clarified the ‘content’ difference of conversations between men and women. She had mentioned that women would spend more time on one topic and would go more in-depth discussing that one topic. Men on the other hand, tend to jump from topic to topic in relative haste. Personally, I feel this is useful for both genders for a few different reasons. One of the reasons being it aids men to understand that women like to slow down and discuss one topic more thoroughly than men typically would. In contrast, women can distinguish that men change gears a lot more frequently and that if they stay on one subject for too long they possibly will lose the males interest in the discussion matter. Due to the different ways of expressing politeness and conversational involvement, they may have trouble communicating even if they share the same language. The ‘two cultures' approach proposes that talk between women and men is fraught with potential misunderstanding for much the same reasons that communication across the ethnic groups is (Mary Crawford, Talking Difference On Gender and Language, 1995). Last but not the least men and women have different roles in conversation because men must act a certain way with men and women must act, but in a different way, with women. At the cafe I work at a couple of old retired men come in regularly to chat with each other. They exchange ideas after the main speaker starts a conversation on a subject, "leading the way", I guess you could say, but the topic always swings toward different directions everytime the other man speaks. Whereas women can focus on the same subject all day. So men are used to trying to maintain the upper hand while women are passive listeners to each other. This is why I think men often dominate conversations over women.

In order to be able to solve some of the problems associated with gender miscommunications, we should distinguish first between the two different types of communications: verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication consists of messages expressed by linguistic means such as the use of intonation, the specific words we choose to say, and the way we are saying them. There are differences in females and males usage of language/verbal communication. As we might expect from traditional sex-role stereotypes, girls tend to establish more egalitarian same-sex groups. Girls use friendly groups as a training ground for cooperation. Boys view friendly conversation among their friends as training for verbal aggression.
