Introduction
Effective communication in health care is crucial for health care professionals, the patients and the establishment providing the care. It can mean the difference between life and death. When there is not enough communication within the health care industry, medical care will not be given effectively due to mistakes that will be made when things are not clear. When lives are at stake, effective communication is a must in the health care industry.

Health communication is based on personal goals, skills, culture, situational factors, and being considerate of other people’s feelings (du Pre, 2005). People are influenced greatly by other people and rely on others to help meet their goals.
As du Pre (2005) explains health care providers have many goals such as patient health and showing their knowledge. Patient’s also have many goals when it comes to their health care such as wanting to get better and to be reassured. Whether or not these goals are met is based on effective health communication. Recognizing interdependence and that no one communicates alone has influence on the effectiveness of communication. Being friendly and honest will help others feel comfortable enough to be friendly and honest with you. People who communicate well are sensitive to other people’s feelings and expectations. This includes listening carefully, being aware of other cultures and their personal preferences. Another example of effective communication in health is recognizing shared meaning. “What an action means depends on the people and the circumstances involved” (du Pre, 2005, pg 8). This is usually based on how people respond to each other by smiling, nodding their head, or an angry look. This will let you know how people are responding to your conversation (du Pre, 2005).

Communication is usually taken for granted in our every day to day living as we use it without thought. Good communication skills are needed in the workplace and especially with nursing staff to and from patients when giving first hand care. Good or bad communication can make there experience within the health care setting a positive or negative one and can leave a lasting impression. A good health care provider can use there communication skills to put a patient at ease with a few comforting words or gestures, a lack of positive communication in the health care setting could leave the patient feeling neglected, ignored and not valued as a patient.
The communication cycle is a commonly used theory of communication. It was first developed by Charles Berner in 1965; it was then modified by Michael Argyle, who was a social psychologist, in 1972. The concept of a ‘communication cycle’ makes it clear that, in order to have effective communication, it must be a two way process. As well as transferring messages to others in a definite, clear way, health care professionals must be able to respond to the verbal feedback as well as the non-verbal feedback. So, effective communication has to involve effort from both participators (both the sender as well as the receiver) in the communication.

Communication is simply the act of transferring and receiving information from one person to another. We communicate for a variety of reasons such as to share information, to comment, to give instructions and to share opinions. Effective communication involves a two way process in which each person tries to understand the view point of the other person. Moreover, communication is a cycle because when two people communicate they need to check that their ideas have been understood. Good communication involves the process of checking, understanding, using reflection and active listening. Effective communication is highly important for the health and social care sector. If professionals use effective communication then it could help them to focus on fulfilling the needs of service users. There are several theories of communication that can be applied to a health and social care environment.In this assignment we will explore two theories of communication in health and social care.

Understanding Effective Communication and Interpersonal Interaction in Health and Social Care Rebecca Harding Interpersonal communication is the way we get some form of information across to someone else or a group of people, and it’s extremely important in the Health and Social care industry. Communication is much more than information exchange, as how we communicate can impact on the receivers feelings too. There are many effective ways of communicating and sometimes there are more appropriate ways than others in certain situations. It’s all about assessing the situation beforehand and working out which is the correct and most effective way of doing so. Being able to communicate effectively also includes good listening skills.
In recent times, in the field of health communication, a shift in beliefs has become apparent. Many feel that the physician-centered approach is no longer the best way to manage the interaction between patients and doctors. A new collaborative approach has been adopted by many. This collaborative approach is more of a partnership between the patient and doctor. More communicating by the patient, and more listening by the doctor. Communication plays a vital role in the healthcare setting, as the relationship with the healthcare professional sets the tone of the care experience and has a powerful impact on patient satisfaction. It is “the shared process in which messages are sent and received between two or more people which are made up of a sender, receiver, and message in a particular context” (cite, date). This essay highlights the importance of, and some common barriers to, effective communication in the healthcare setting. It involves many interpersonal skills such as effective observation, questioning and listening, giving feedback, recognizing and removing barriers.
There are several of communication techniques used in health and social care settings. Effective communication is essential to provide quality care service to service user.
“Extensive research has shown that no matter how knowledgeable a clinician might be, if he or she is not able to open good communication with the patient, he or she may be of no help” (Asnani, MR. 2009). Effective communication plays a big role in healthcare and contributes to the quality of patient care and teamwork.
Communication in the health industry affects the quality of care for patients. Quality care is one of the most important priorities in the health industry. Communication can affect people’s health, and sometimes even their survival. One of the ways we can ensure quality care is by maintaining therapeutic relationships between medical staff and patients, and by using a holistic approach (Greenwood, n.d.). According to Morgan & Yoder (2011) “Holistic care is a behaviour that recognises a person as a whole and acknowledges the interdependence among one's biological, social, psychological, and spiritual aspects.
Opener: Approximately 80% of healthcare errors are due to lack of communication. Whether that is patient to nurse, nurse to nurse, nurse to provider, provider to patient, provider to provider, these errors are likely to have life-long effects on patients and their family members.
The Institute of Medicine published an article on the basic principles of communication in the health care system. The goal of this article was to define the principles of communication, and thus help to promote patient care. When effective communication is used, higher patient satisfaction is recorded. The seven principles of include," mutual respect, harmonized goals, a supportive environment, appropriate decision partners, the right information, full disclosure, and continuous learning" (Paget et al., 2011.)
