Quietly standing in a museum, you examine a written document or other artifact. It may seem like just a piece of paper or a cool item to look at from hundreds of years ago, but you aren’t just looking at it. You’re having a conversation with it. Not everyone will realize it, but there are conversations to be had with these items, carried through time so that we might learn from them today. This was the image painted by Dr. Beth Henschen, who works in the Political Science Department at EMU. This event was one of several of the lectures from the “Courageous Conversations” series beneath Star Lectures, held at the Honors College auditorium on September 19th, and beginning at 7:00 pm. After attending this event, I can now explain my stance about the power and importance of conversations, and the lasting impact they can have. When I hear the word conversation, I frequently picture relaxed settings where people speak casually. Conversation was separate from debate, arguments, and other forms of communication, simply because I was never taught to connect any of them. What Dr. Henschen explained is that conversation covers a much broader variety of speaking and can also include a more important and professional type of speaking. Not only did I learn about the different types of speaking that the word conversation encompasses, but I also learned about the power and influence of conversations, specifically linked to the constitution, as well as in everyday life. The first morning of nursing care I felt nervous, as well as extremely excited. This was my first true interaction working in the health care system, specifically with a resident and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The first aspect I noticed when I began my day with my staff buddy was how fast paced we moved and how time flew, which is something I expected but was still surprized by.
On Monday 23 May 2016, at approximately 1339hrs, I 6246 Leading Rate Joseph S was in my office at the Welfare/Housing department located at #31 St. Vincent Street Port of Spain. Present in the office at the time was Sgt Cassie R and L/Cpl Neptune. Whilst performing my daily duties in the office, I was about to use the telefax machine to make a copy of a document which is not an unusual function carried out by the members of the office. As I was about to do so, I was stopped by Sgt Cassie who said “yuh can’t copy nuttin they.” Being a bit confused about his uttered word I asked the question “why Sgt Cassie.” He then replied in a loud tone “don’t make no fucking copy LR.” I responded to the Sgt by saying “I am a grown woman bordering Petty
Today was the first day of class and it worked fairly well overall. I was primarily concerned with just getting my bearing and understanding how the class would operate, I learned how most of the classes would involve a mix of physical activity, acting practice and a little bit of lecture time. The only actual acting that took place was the reading of the academic honesty pledge. Even so, I still think that I got some good practice and feedback out of it, my pacing is very good and I’m definitely much more confident than I ever was back in high school. I do still need to learn to better prepare myself immediately before I begin my piece. I anticipate I will have a lot more to write about in my next entry when class starts in earnest.
that we explore why she’s been feeling down lately together. Mary then said, “Talk about what?” I then stated, “Why have you been feeling down lately?” Mary then stated, “No I don’t want to talk about that?” Using mirroring I then stated, “You don’t want to talk about why you feel down?” Mary then stated “No I don’t”. What occurred here can be described as a disconnection. Whether it be my working or something that happened with Mary prior to me coming in or Mary was just not having a good day, I was not able to connect her in conversation and she disengaged. Again in a non- judgmental tone I repeated what Mary stated so that she knew I had heard her, I was not dismissing her feelings. Mary from the beginning was very agitated so I knew that I probably would get much dialogue from her, maybe it was the nature of our discussion because I was asking her
If the workplace is striving to continue to be successful, our greatest opportunity lies in the ability to effectively communicate. Keeping in mind, that our personal success relies heavily on our communication skills. It is written, that employers seek applicants who can work together and able to effectively communicate (Adler, 2013). As I review my organizations job postings, I discover that eighty percent or more list the ability to communicate verbally and written. After having the opportunity to assist in writing the job qualifications for positions within my service center, we administered a written test, typing and reading test. Our goal was to get as many qualified applicants who demonstrated the ability to effectively communicate and
As we learned in class, there is no single effective way to communicate; however, there are different strengths that someone can naturally have or acquire through practice (Adler, Rosenfield, & Proctor, 2015) . A strength that I believe I possess is being able to communicate well with different people in various situations. Sarah Beth is a girl in my church who is my age, and she has Down syndrome. Sarah Beth is highly functional, and she has contagious energy. Because Sarah Beth has Down syndrome, one has to speak a little more descriptively and a little less complicated to communicate well with her. Whenever I see Sarah Beth, she raises her hand to give me a high-five and she asks me about my boyfriend. Although I love seeing Sarah Beth
In June 2012, standing at Parade Rest in front of my supervisor, I had to explain myself for making another soldier feel belittled. Staff Sergeant Waschler, the Treatment Noncommissioned Officer, criticized my interpersonal skills due to the teaching method I used to explain patient assessments and documentation to a fellow soldier. Besides remorse, a plethora of emotions beleaguered my mind including fear, surprise, and guilt during this encounter. Perplexed by all of this, I felt absolute regret since I had no intention of making the soldier feel disparaged. Staff Sergeant Waschler dismissed the soldier and explained to me that my teaching methods may not work effectively on every person and therefore a teacher must adjust their interpersonal
Upon receiving my special project, I took the opportunity to approach it as a new challenging task but with the commitment to make it a learning and teaching opportunity for myself. The main objective for this project was to enhance my knowledge and to adhere to what is one of my weaknesses, group presentations. I was provided with the assignment of three post conferences to be completed by the end of the semester. When delegating topics to present, I focused on the tentative schedule and selected one disease to present in each post conference. My selection was based on utilizing the time I had, as a benefit for both students and I to learn something that was involved in our curriculum. The topics I choose to discuss in my post conferences
My education from Creighton University has been quite helpful while at my internship this summer. The things that have stood out to me that I have learned while at this internship include seeing how relationships form, noticing racist and sexist things within the organization, figuring out how the communication within the organization, as well as understanding how my tone of voice can affect the way people perceive me on the phone.
The whole situation happened when I looked at my schedule on January 3rd, 2016 and noticed that I was working from 8:00am-10:30am on January 7th, 2016 on a Thursday. It was bizarre how I was scheduled to work two and a half hours since I have not been scheduled to work that short amount of time in over a year. Nevertheless, I was not disappointed because I was busy that day. On January 6th, 2016, I double checked the schedule in the crew room to see what time I work on January 7th, 2016 just to be sure and it showed from 8:00am-10:30am again, so I am one hundred percent sure that this was what the schedule showed in the crew room. Furthermore, on January 7th, 2016, I clocked in at 8:00am, and later on I had break around 10:00am. I came back to the kitchen to return to the kitchen so I could start working on the switch from breakfast to lunch. At this time I noticed that we now a manager in the kitchen. It was not that busy at the time so there was a bit of time for conversation while still working. As
My goal for this conversation was to keep things short and simple, and ask questions that he would find value in like work and financial planning. If I could keep things relevant to his interests I believed we would be able to have a longer conversation. I wanted to put his interests above my own in the hopes that we could both find something beneficial out of it.

My object during this course was a short video commercial with thematic line of “More Rice” with implicit meaning that when someone serving you with rice and asks you for serving with more rice it means that he/she wants to spent more time with you or he/she really take care of you. The title of video commercial was “Heartwarming, Chinese New Year” with a social message of re-generating love and affection for working mothers who serve their children well and always care for their health and education, grow them up and make them able to compete in the world for a better life style and future. Denotative descriptions and connotative readings later studied in context with scholarly written articles especially Amy Tan’s Mother Tongue world famous story (Tan, Amy, 1991). There were
Sheri, my personal suggestion for improving communication with your employees would be to simply engage with them. I propose that you learn their strengths, weaknesses and what are their motivators. Afterwards, I would commit to coaching and mentoring to aid in becoming a more effective manager. During my reading of an article (Gesme, Towle & Wiseman, 2010) it explains the importance of coaching and explains “that coaching is providing advice, recommendations, and guidance for the employees to perform well”. If you sense that staff member is not as concerned about their job or does not consider it a priority, attempt to identify their motivators and career goals. You don’t want to become too personal with an employee, however it is perfectly
There is a significant difference between my perception of communication at the beginning of this course compared to now. Initially, I was aware communication was an important skill people needed to have, but I wasn’t fully aware of the depth of communication. I never realized there were such a variety of behaviors and characteristics that impacted the ability for people to communicate effectively. Once I started completing the self-assessments my perspective was broaden and I gained helpful insight into my own communication strengths and weaknesses. With each self-assessment I truly felt I was getting to know myself better.
